Studying in Bayreuth costs 172 euros in semester fees, which is considerably less than at many other universities we checked. The student office (Studierendenkanzlei) of the University of Bayreuth lists two items and two semesters. This guide puts the figure in context, names the open question about the date and shows what is documented about housing.

Short answer: The semester fee of the University of Bayreuth comes to 172.00 euros for both the winter semester 2026/27 and the summer semester 2027: 87.00 euros for the contribution of the Studentenwerk and 85.00 euros for the semester ticket. It is due when you submit your application for enrolment or re-enrolment. The page carries no date. Last updated: October 2026. Source: student office of the University of Bayreuth.

Key points at a glance

  • Semester fee: 172.00 euros per semester, of which 85.00 euros is the semester ticket (49.4 percent).
  • The page lists the winter semester 2026/27 and the summer semester 2027 with the same amount.
  • The date of the page is unclear. The metadata show an export on 12 November 2025, and the semesters come after that.
  • The page names no late-payment fee. For late or incomplete payment, enrolment is refused or deregistration (Exmatrikulation) is initiated.
  • We could not document a current dormitory price from the Studentenwerk.

What does one semester cost at the University of Bayreuth?

The student office lists the fees for both semesters. In both cases, the statement is the same: the total of 172.00 euros consists of the contribution of the Studentenwerk and the semester ticket.

Source: student office of the University of Bayreuth, semester fees, retrieved October 2026. Assumption: spread over six months, 172 euros comes to about 28.67 euros per month, or 344 euros per academic year. The due date is linked to the application, and the page names no fixed date. It links the deadlines for enrolment and re-enrolment separately, which we have not checked.

How reliable is the date of the page?

The page shows no publication date. Its metadata contain the entry “meta-last-export: 2025-11-12”. That is the time of an export, not necessarily the time of the last change. That a page dated November 2025 already lists the summer semester 2027 is possible if the amounts were fixed in advance, but we cannot prove it. Check the amount on your re-enrolment notice before you transfer any money.

What does housing cost in Bayreuth?

We could not document a current price from the Studentenwerk Oberfranken. An undated information leaflet of the university on finding a room gives dormitory rents of 105 to 235 euros. Without a date and without information on whether these prices still apply, we do not adopt them as current.

Which health insurance applies to students in Bayreuth?

The contribution does not depend on the place of study. Family insurance (Familienversicherung) applies during training up to your 25th birthday and with total income of up to 565 euros per month (2026), or up to 603 euros for a mini-job (§ 10 SGB V). Otherwise, the student health insurance applies.

Sources of the table: § 236 SGB V (assessment base, 855 euros since October 2024) and the GKV-Spitzenverband fact sheet on calculation variables 2026 (as of 1 January 2026). The additional contribution of your insurer may deviate from the average and shifts the total accordingly.

An exemption from compulsory insurance must be applied for within three months of the start of the obligation. It presupposes another entitlement to cover and cannot be revoked (§ 8 SGB V). Whether statutory or private cover suits you depends on your health, your career goals and your plans. The comparison is in our guide Public or Private Health Insurance for International Students.

How does a side job affect this?

A mini-job of up to 603 euros per month is compatible with family insurance in 2026. From 1 January 2027, the limit is 633 euros (Minijob-Zentrale). Anyone who regularly works more than 20 hours per week loses the student employee privilege (Werkstudentenprivileg). More on this is in our guide Finding a student job: where to look and what to watch for (in German). The assessment rates as of January 2026 apply: 855 euros for students living away from home up to age 24, and 992 euros for the age group 25 to 29 (German Student Services Organisation).

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay for the semester ticket if I do not use it?

It is included in the semester fee for all students, at 85 euros per semester. Check where the ticket is valid with the university before you plan journeys.

How much do the fees cost per year?

Assumption: the amounts stay the same, which gives 344 euros per academic year. Rent and living costs come on top.

Does health insurance work differently in Bayreuth?

No. The contribution rate and the assessment base are the same nationwide. Differences arise from the additional contribution of the insurer.

What happens if I do not take care of my insurance?

If you have no other cover after enrolment, you are generally subject to compulsory insurance. Clarify your status before you enrol.

What to do now

  1. Check the amount on your re-enrolment notice and compare it with 172.00 euros.
  2. Ask the Studentenwerk Oberfranken about current rents and application deadlines.
  3. Calculate the fixed costs without rent and add the warm rent of an offer.
  4. Clarify your insurance status before you enrol.
