Studying in Augsburg in winter semester 2026/27 costs mainly the semester fee, rent and living expenses. Anyone enrolled at the University of Augsburg or at the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule Augsburg) pays fixed fees to the university every semester. This guide shows which figures are verified, where to find them and how to build your monthly budget.

Short answer: For winter semester 2026/27 the University of Augsburg lists a student services fee of 85.00 euros and a semester ticket for 96.55 euros per semester (status October 2026, University of Augsburg). Rent depends heavily on the offer. For health insurance, a nationwide assessment base of 855 euros per month applies. Stand: October 2026.

Key points at a glance

  • The student services fee (Studierendenwerksbeitrag) for winter semester 2026/27 is 85.00 euros, and the semester ticket is 96.55 euros (status October 2026).
  • The university lists a total on its page that differs from the sum of the individual items. Calculate with the individual items.
  • The additional contribution of your health insurer (Zusatzbeitrag) also determines the total of student health insurance.
  • Prices for dormitory places are listed on the pages of the Studierendenwerk Augsburg. We do not state rents without a verifiable source.
  • The maximum rate of the federal student financial aid scheme BAföG (Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz) for students under 25 living away from home is 855 euros (status January 2026).

What does a semester cost in Augsburg?

The University of Augsburg publishes its fees on a separate page. For winter semester 2026/27 it lists the following individual items:

ItemAmount per semesterStatusSource
Student services fee85.00 eurosWinter semester 2026/27University of Augsburg
Semester ticket96.55 eurosWinter semester 2026/27University of Augsburg
Sum of the two items (calculated)181.55 eurosWinter semester 2026/27own addition

The page also gives a total of 181.95 euros. It does not match the sum of the individual items, which is 181.55 euros. Use the individual amounts and compare them with your fee notice before you record the figure.

The university’s page gives neither a re-enrolment deadline nor an amount for summer semester 2027, and it carries no update date. We could not verify rents for the dormitories of the Studierendenwerk Augsburg; the pages of the student services organisation available to us contained no dated price information.

Spread across six months, the total comes to roughly 30 euros per month. Assumption: the semester lasts six months and no further fee is charged.

How much do you need per month in Augsburg?

The biggest items are rent and health insurance. Rents for dormitory places and shared flats differ by provider, which is why we work with an assumption rather than a market average.

  1. Enter the warm rent. Assumption: 430 euros for a room in a shared flat (WG), including service charges.
  2. Convert the semester fee into a monthly amount. Assumption: 181.55 euros spread over six months gives 30.26 euros.
  3. Enter health insurance. For under 23s without children this is 142.96 euros, as calculated in the table below.
  4. Add everything up. Assumption: 430 plus 30.26 plus 142.96 gives 603.22 euros per month, without food, electricity, mobility and study materials.

Enter the total in your budget and add the variable costs. The steps are described in our guide Budget Planning for Students: A Monthly Plan in 3 Steps.

Which health insurance do you need as a student in Augsburg?

In Augsburg too, the statutory rule for students applies: if you are not covered as a family member through your parents or otherwise compulsorily insured, you are generally insured under student health insurance (studentische Krankenversicherung). The contributions depend on the assessment base and the additional contribution of your health insurer, not on the university.

ComponentCalculationAmount per monthStatus and source
Health insurance (basic, without additional contribution)855 x 10.22 percent87.38 eurosJanuary 2026, GKV-Spitzenverband
Additional contribution (average)855 x 2.9 percent24.80 euros2026, Federal Ministry of Health (BMG), depends on the insurer
Long-term care insurance until age 23 or with a child855 x 3.6 percent30.78 eurosJanuary 2026, GKV-Spitzenverband
Long-term care insurance from age 23 without children855 x 4.2 percent35.91 eurosJanuary 2026, GKV-Spitzenverband

The assessment base of 855 euros comes from the BAföG needs assessment for students who do not live with their parents (§ 236 SGB V, valid since October 2024). Assumption for the totals: an additional contribution of 2.9 percent. This gives health and long-term care insurance of 142.96 euros per month (under 23 without children) or 148.09 euros (from 23 without children).

The obligation ends at the end of the semester in which you turn 30 (§ 5 SGB V, status January 2026). Whether statutory or private health insurance suits you is a personal question. An overview of the differences is in our guide PKV or GKV as a Student: Which Option Fits Your Situation. For the personal decision, a consultation can help (how we work (in German)).

Who is the contact point in Augsburg?

For enrolment and the semester fee, the University of Augsburg is responsible. The Augsburg University of Applied Sciences has its own student advisory service. The Studierendenwerk Augsburg (student services organisation) looks after dormitories, canteens and advice on social benefits. The student services fee flows into exactly these services.

When looking at dormitories, check the combined rental contract with service charges that the Studierendenwerk Augsburg published in 2025. It shows which running costs are included in the price.

How do you get around Augsburg affordably?

The University of Augsburg lists the semester ticket at 96.55 euros per semester (status winter semester 2026/27). Whether it is worth it depends on where you live and where you need to go. The terms of use are on the page of the student services organisation. Everyday tips are in our guide Cheap Travel as a Student: Tips for a Small Budget.

Which funding can you use in Augsburg?

The BAföG rates apply nationwide, including in Augsburg. The maximum rate for students under 25 who do not live with their parents is 855 euros per month: 475 euros basic needs allowance plus 380 euros housing allowance (status January 2026, Studierendenwerke, BAföG FAQ).

Half of the funding is an interest-free loan. The maximum rate is an upper limit, because the authority checks income and assets. Our guide BAföG 2026: Eligibility, Amount and Repayment Explained explains how to calculate your entitlement.
