The short answer on studying as a pensioner
Studying as a pensioner does not change your insurance. If you are compulsorily insured as a pensioner, that remains the case during your studies, and no student health insurance is created. If you study without a pension after your 30th birthday, you generally cannot rely on student health insurance and need voluntary statutory or private cover. Guest students without enrolment are not insured as students.
| Situation | Health insurance | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Pension with compulsory insurance, studying | Health insurance for pensioners (KVdR), no student health insurance | § 5 para. 1 no. 11 SGB V, circular 2017, section 1.5.1 |
| Guest student without pension | No student health insurance, own cover needed | Circular 2017, section 1.1.3.4 |
| Enrolled, over 30, without compulsory insurance | Voluntary statutory insurance or private health insurance | Circular 2017, section 1.1.4.1 |
| Spouse insured under statutory insurance | Family insurance through the spouse takes priority over student health insurance | Circular 2017, section 1.5.1 |
What applies to studying as a pensioner who already receives a pension?
In that case your compulsory insurance as a pensioner remains in place, and studying changes nothing about it. No student health insurance is added, because insurance as a pensioner takes priority. The circular expressly names compulsory insurance as a pensioner as a reason that excludes student health insurance. Applicants for a pension rank below student health insurance.
Contributions for health insurance for pensioners depend on the pension and not on your studies. The circular refers to its own set of rules for pensioner insurance, so it is worth checking with your health insurer or the pension insurance provider.
What is the situation without a pension and after my 30th birthday?
Student health insurance ends at the latest with the end of the semester in which you turn 30. Anyone who starts studying only after their 30th birthday generally cannot rely on student health insurance. Then voluntary statutory insurance, private health insurance or family insurance, if possible, remain. The health insurer checks each case.
The following example shows the minimum calculation for voluntary statutory insurance in 2026. It assumes that there is no entitlement to sick pay and that the reduced contribution rate applies.
- Minimum contribution basis: €3,955 reference figure divided by 3 equals €1,318.33 per month.
- Health insurance at 14.0% plus 2.9% additional contribution, so 16.9%: €1,318.33 times 16.9% equals €222.80.
- Long-term care insurance without childless surcharge: €1,318.33 times 3.6% equals €47.46.
- Total: €222.80 plus €47.46 equals €270.26 per month.
The additional contribution of your insurer may differ from the average. Whether the reduced rate applies depends on whether you are entitled to sick pay. The insurer clarifies this before you join.
What role does enrolment play?
Enrolment determines which insurance rules apply. Anyone who attends only as a guest student has no student status. Anyone who enrols is assessed under the rules for students, and age and pension status play a role there. The university decides on admission, and the health insurer decides on insurance.
Here is what to do now
- Clarify whether you receive a pension and whether this creates compulsory insurance as a pensioner.
- Clarify your status at the university: guest student or enrolment.
- Check whether you are covered as a family member through your spouse.
- Ask your health insurer to calculate the contribution for voluntary insurance.
- Compare voluntary statutory insurance and private health insurance before you decide.
Frequently asked questions
Can I be enrolled as a pensioner?
Yes, studying is also possible while receiving a pension. Health insurance then remains the one for pensioners, and no student health insurance is created.
Do I have to cancel student health insurance if I receive a pension?
Student health insurance does not arise at all when a pension is received. The question of cancellation therefore does not arise. If you are unsure, the health insurer confirms your status in writing.
Do guest students pay contributions?
Guest students are not compulsorily insured as students. Contributions arise if another insurance exists, such as health insurance for pensioners or voluntary membership.
What is the minimum cost of voluntary insurance in 2026?
The calculation with the minimum contribution basis gives about €270 per month for health and long-term care insurance without childless surcharge. The actual contribution depends on the insurer, the additional contribution and income.
