Guest Student Health Insurance and Child Benefit

Guest students are not enrolled, so student insurance does not cover them. Here is what applies to family insurance and child benefit in 2026.

Short answer

Guest students (Gasthörer) are not enrolled and therefore not covered by student insurance, so guest student health insurance needs a different route. Taking lectures as a guest student is also not enough for child benefit. Anyone who studies as a guest student therefore needs their own cover and checks the child benefit entitlement separately. The governing sources are the joint circular of 2017 (Gemeinsames Rundschreiben) and the child benefit administrative instructions (Dienstanweisung Kindergeld).

Guest student health insurance: am I covered?

Not through the student insurance. Guest students attend lectures on their own initiative, without obligations, and therefore do not count as students. The circular expressly lists them as not covered by the compulsory insurance. Cover must therefore arise for another reason.

Check the options in this order:

  1. Compulsory insurance through employment, if you work and contributions are paid.
  2. Family insurance, if the age and income limits fit.
  3. Compulsory insurance as a pensioner, if you receive a pension.
  4. Voluntary statutory insurance or private health insurance.

When does family insurance end for a guest student?

Family insurance for children depends on training. Guest student status does not count as school or vocational training. Without training, the age limit is 23, and only if you are not employed. In addition, the income limit of 565 euros a month applies for 2026.

AgeConditionApplies to guest students?
Up to 18No further conditionYes
Up to 23Not employedYes, subject to the income limit
Up to 25School or vocational training, including studiesNo, as long as no other training exists

Worked example: You are 24, study as a guest student and are not employed. Family insurance through your parents is then no longer an option, because the age limit of 23 has been exceeded and there is no training status.

What does this mean for child benefit?

For a child who only studies as a guest student, there is generally no child benefit. The child benefit administrative instructions expressly exclude taking part as a guest student. The entitlement requires training, which for a degree means proper enrolment at the university.

  1. Child, 22 years old, guest student without enrolment: no child benefit for this reason.
  2. Child, 22 years old, properly enrolled: 259 euros a month, which is 3,108 euros a year.
  3. The difference shows why the status should be clarified before the semester starts.

Without a training place, a child may be counted up to age 25 if the job search is proven. If registered as a job seeker without employment, the limit is 21. The family benefits office decides case by case.

When does enrolment make sense?

If insurance or child benefit is the priority, enrolment is often the step that changes your status. It does bring obligations, however: the semester fee, the examination regulations and, where applicable, insurance as a student. Whether student insurance suits your age depends on your age at the end of the semester in which you turn 30.

What to do now

  1. Clarify your status with the university in writing before you make any decisions.
  2. Check whether you are subject to compulsory insurance in any employment.
  3. Ask your health insurer whether family insurance is an option.
  4. Clarify child benefit with the family benefits office before you enrol.
  5. Compare voluntary statutory insurance and private health insurance if none of the other routes fits.

Frequently asked questions

Am I automatically covered by student insurance as a guest student?

No. Guest students attend lectures without obligations and do not count as students. They are therefore not covered by student insurance, and cover must arise for another reason.

Does my family receive child benefit if I only study as a guest student?

As a rule, no. The child benefit administrative instructions expressly state that taking part as a guest student is not enough. The entitlement requires training.

Can I switch to student insurance later?

With enrolment, the rules for students apply. Whether compulsory insurance arises depends on age and employment. The health insurer checks the individual case.

How long am I family insured without training?

Without school or vocational training, the age limit is 23, and only if you are not employed. Guest student studies do not count as training.
