Payment of the study start grant (Studienstarthilfe) occupies many first-year students right after applying: you applied for the 1,000 euros through BAföG Digital and want to know when the money arrives. The law sets no payment date. What it does say, how differently the offices work in practice and what you can do for quick processing is covered in this guide.
Short answer: The law names no fixed payment date for the study start grant. Section 56a BAföG only provides that 1,000 euros are paid once as a grant at the start of training. Processing time depends on the responsible office: the City of Wiesbaden states about 7 to 14 days, the Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern usually several months. Both statements are undated and serve only as examples from individual bodies. Last updated: November 2026.
Key points
- The grant is a one-off payment of 1,000 euros (section 56a(1) BAföG). It is granted at the start of training; no transfer date is set in the law.
- The application runs electronically through BAföG Digital and must be made by the end of the month after the start of training (section 56(3)).
- According to undated statements from individual bodies, processing time varies, from about 7 to 14 days to several months.
- Before processing, BAföG Digital compares applications automatically to avoid double payments (section 56a(2)).
- Complete documents shorten the wait: application form, enrolment certificate and proof of benefit receipt.
What does the law say about payment?
Section 56a(1) BAföG regulates the type and amount: the grant is paid once as a grant at the start of training in the amount of 1,000 euros. The provision names no payment day, no processing deadline and no rhythm. Unlike ongoing BAföG, which is paid monthly, this is a single payment. There is no due date tied to a calendar date.
Under section 56(5) the body that is locally responsible on the day of application is responsible. Under section 56(4) the state governments may by ordinance entrust bodies other than the BAföG offices (Ämter für Ausbildungsförderung) with the administration. Processing can therefore be faster or slower from place to place. The portal tells you who is responsible. See also Finding the BAföG office.
How long does processing take?
The statements of the bodies differ. The City of Wiesbaden gives a processing time of about 7 to 14 days in its procedure information on the grant. The Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern writes in its FAQ that processing usually takes several months. The FAQ names no date and no payment time. Neither document carries a date. They come from bodies that organise the application differently, are to be read as examples and cannot be transferred to your office.
| Source | Statement on processing | Note |
|---|---|---|
| City of Wiesbaden, Amt 40, procedure information | About 7 to 14 days | Refers to the local office. No fees. |
| Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern, FAQ | Usually several months | No date in the document. No payment date named. |
| Law, sections 56 and 56a BAföG | No deadline, no payment date | Regulates amount, application and data comparison. |
Do not plan the payment as a certain date. If you intend to use the grant for textbooks, IT equipment or a rental deposit, for which it is meant according to the City of Wiesbaden, you should be able to bridge the costs another way if necessary.
What happens after the application?
- You submit the application through BAföG Digital. For logging in to the portal the City of Wiesbaden names myID or the ID card.
- BAföG Digital compares your data automatically with earlier applicants (section 56a(2)). If there is a hit, the portal refers you to the existing application and the responsible office.
- The responsible office checks the conditions and proofs: first-time enrolment, age under 25, benefit receipt in the previous month.
- If approved, the grant is paid out. Answer queries from the office quickly, because every open question prolongs processing.
The conditions are described in Study Start Grant: 1,000 Euros for First-Year Students, the deadlines in Applying for the study start grant: deadlines.
Which mistakes delay payment?
- Missing enrolment certificate: the office cannot check the first-time enrolment.
- Missing or incomplete proof of benefit receipt in the month before the start of training.
- Duplicate application with the same personal data: it is excluded under section 56a(2) and leads to a notice in the portal.
- False or incomplete information: according to the City of Heidelberg’s procedure description it can lead to repayment demands.
- Late application: anyone who misses the deadline at the end of the month after the start of training can no longer receive the grant, see Deadline missed: what is still possible.
Example: application in October, payment at what time?
Assumption: you start your studies on 1 October 2026 and submit the application on 15 October 2026 through BAföG Digital. The deadline runs to 30 November 2026. The law sets no date for payment. With a processing time of 7 to 14 days, as the City of Wiesbaden states, the point in time would be early November. With several months, as the Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern names it, it would only be in the new year. Which case applies to you depends on the responsible office.
Do I have to pay tax on the grant or have it offset?
The FAQ of the Studierendenwerk München Oberbayern calls the benefit tax-free. For income-dependent social benefits the grant is not to be counted as income under section 56b BAföG. Details are in Is the grant offset against other benefits?.
