The study start-up aid requires that you received certain social benefits in the month before your training begins. Which benefits count is set by the statute, § 56 BAföG (German law, in German). This guide explains the prior-month rule, the list of benefits and the cases in which you should ask your funding office.

Short answer: The study start-up aid of 1,000 euros requires that in the month before your training starts you received benefits such as basic income support under SGB II or SGB XII, housing benefit, child supplement or asylum seeker benefits. You must also be under 25 at the start. The governing provision is § 56 BAföG. Last updated: November 2026.

The most important points

  • The decisive month is the one before your training starts, not the month of your first lecture.
  • The statute names benefits under SGB II and SGB XII, asylum seeker benefits, the child supplement and housing benefit.
  • Benefits from child and youth welfare count only under the conditions set out in the law.
  • The aid is intended for students who enrol for the first time and are under 25 at the start.
  • In unclear cases the responsible funding office decides on the individual case.

Which benefits count under § 56 BAföG?

The table shows the benefits that the statute names. It summarises the wording and does not replace the check of your individual case.

Child benefit (Kindergeld) is not among the benefits named in the wording. If you are unsure whether another benefit counts, check the statute and ask the office rather than relying on assumptions.

Why the prior month is decisive

The statute looks at the month before the start of training. Assumption: your studies begin on 1 October. Then September counts. If you received one of the named benefits in August but no longer in September, the condition falls away under the wording.

The reverse also holds: if you receive benefits in September, the condition is met even if the payment began in August. What matters is receipt in the prior month, and you need proof of it to attach to the application.

What the benefits differ in

The list in the statute combines benefits from quite different areas of law. Basic income support under SGB II and social assistance under SGB XII are welfare benefits in the Social Code. Housing benefit follows the Housing Benefit Act and is granted by the housing benefit offices. The child supplement is a benefit for families with low income and has its own rules. Asylum seeker benefits follow the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act.

For your question, the legal name matters less than whether the benefit was actually received in the month before training began and falls under one of the provisions. A notice from another area, such as a training grant for further education, does not count automatically.

What the proof in the application should contain

The application requires proof of benefit receipt in the prior month. Useful evidence includes notices, payment confirmations or statements that show the month, the benefit and the paying body. A letter without a period rarely helps the office.

You also need proof of enrolment. Check that both documents carry the same name and address. Discrepancies lead to follow-up questions that delay processing, so a short check before uploading saves time.

Frequently asked questions

Does child benefit count as a benefit?

Under the wording of § 56 BAföG, no. Child benefit is not among the benefits the statute names for the study start-up aid. For other benefits, the list in the law applies, and the office checks each case individually.

Does benefit received by my family count?

The procedure description of a city administration states that benefits can also go to the family. The statute is the decisive text. If you are unsure, the office will clarify whether the receipt in your case is sufficient before you apply.

What if I worked in the month before?

The wording ties eligibility to receipt of the named benefits. Whether your own income changes anything does not follow clearly from the statute. If you earned wages in the prior month and are uncertain, ask the office before you file.

Does the aid also apply to a master’s degree?

According to the wording, the aid is for those who enrol for the first time. A master’s degree after a completed bachelor’s is therefore generally not covered. Our guide on master’s and second degrees (in German) explains this in more detail.

What to do if the benefit ends at short notice

Anyone who drops out of benefit receipt shortly before studies begin faces a difficult question. The statute looks at the prior month and leaves little room for other months. Whether a hardship case or another solution applies is decided by the funding office for training assistance. The wording alone does not promise a particular outcome.

Document your situation with notices and letters from the benefit agency as soon as the position changes. Ask the office early, before the deadline comes closer. A written answer gives you planning security, even when it is not the answer you hoped for. Keep copies of every letter you send to the office. Dates and names help if the file is reviewed later.

Checking your situation step by step

  1. Check your notices for the month before the start of training and note which benefits you received.
  2. Confirm that you are under 25 at the start of training.
  3. Collect the proof of benefit receipt and enrolment.
  4. File the application through BAföG Digital within the deadline, and ask the office if something is unclear.
