Study abroad in Sri Lanka: The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC, Europäische Krankenversicherungskarte) is not listed for Sri Lanka by the European Commission, so it does not apply there. German citizens need a visa. For a tourist stay you apply for an ETA online before entry. According to the German Federal Foreign Office, the ETA is free of charge and valid for 30 days on first application. Only a Sri Lankan diplomatic mission issues longer visas. We found no sourced figure for living costs.

How are you insured in Sri Lanka?
Whether your statutory or private insurance continues to apply abroad depends on your contract. Sri Lanka lies outside the EU area covered by the health insurance card, so you need to arrange cover for your stay yourself.
European Health Insurance Card
The European Commission’s FAQ on the EHIC lists the countries where the card applies. Sri Lanka is not on that list. The page carries no date.
Private travel health insurance and repatriation
The German Federal Foreign Office recommends travel health insurance with medical evacuation cover. The page also notes that hospitals often ask for a credit card, even if you are insured, and that bills sometimes have to be paid before discharge. Background is in the guide Travel health insurance for Erasmus, USA and Work and Travel (in German). If you are privately insured, the guide PKV for students outside the EU (in German) helps.
Vaccinations
For direct entry from Germany, the German Federal Foreign Office lists no compulsory vaccinations. Proof is required if you enter from a yellow fever area or after more than twelve hours in transit there, from the age of nine months. The page recommends hepatitis A. Standard vaccinations under the STIKO schedule should be up to date, especially measles.
Do you need a visa for Sri Lanka?
Yes. According to the German Federal Foreign Office, German citizens need a visa, which must be applied for online through the ETA portal before entry. It is free of charge and issued for 30 days and one entry on first application. An extension is possible, but the page describes it as very time-consuming.
Longer visas are issued only by a Sri Lankan diplomatic mission. The page gives no information on study stays. Ask the mission which visa applies to your studies, and get the answer in writing.
The page also warns that if you use a tourist visa for business purposes or conferences, you risk arrest and deportation.
- Passport, provisional passport or children’s passport that is still valid for six months on entry
- Identity card is not accepted
- Registration on the ETA portal before entry
Travel warning and security situation
The country page of the German Federal Foreign Office (status 25 October 2026) contains no travel warning in its text. It refers to a separate overview titled Current travel warnings, whose content was not available to us. According to the page, security measures have been stepped up since the protests of 2022, but terrorist attacks cannot be ruled out. Spontaneous protests, curfews imposed at short notice and crime remain risks, and incidents involving women travelling alone have occurred.
What does a study abroad semester in Sri Lanka cost?
Living costs
We found no official figure for living costs in Sri Lanka. The international pages of the University of Colombo did not list living costs either, so this guide gives no amount. Ask your host university for its budget for exchange students.
Funding: Erasmus+ and Auslands-BAföG
The EU programme guide for Erasmus+ lists Sri Lanka in the Asia region as a third country. Participation is possible only for certain actions. Ask your International Office whether Erasmus+ funding can apply to your stay. The guide Erasmus and planning your study abroad semester (in German) explains the process.
According to the DSW flyer (status January 2026), the Studierendenwerk Tübingen-Hohenheim is responsible for Sri Lanka. For a partial study period outside the EU and Switzerland, a maximum of two semesters is funded, after at least one year of study in Germany. We found no supplement for study abroad. Details are in the guide Auslands-BAföG: eligibility, amounts and supplements (in German).
