Study abroad Panama: The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is valid according to the European Commission only in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Panama is not among them. How are you insured in Panama?

European Health Insurance Card and social security agreement

According to the European Commission’s overview, the EHIC applies in the EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Panama is not listed there, so you should not expect benefits through the card in Panama. We found no social security agreement with Panama that covers health insurance, so we name none.

Ask your health insurer to confirm in writing what protection it provides in Panama before you sign the learning agreement. The basics for privately insured students are in the guide Health insurance during a study abroad semester (in German).

Private travel health insurance and repatriation

The German Federal Foreign Office advises taking out travel health insurance with repatriation cover for the length of your stay. Which benefits you need depends on your contract, your university and the length of your stay. Background is in the guide Travel health insurance for Erasmus, USA and Work and Travel (in German).

Proof of yellow fever vaccination is only needed when you enter from a yellow fever area, not on direct entry from Germany. For areas east of the Panama Canal, vaccination is recommended. The German Federal Foreign Office names hepatitis A as a travel vaccination. For a longer stay, hepatitis B, rabies and typhoid are added. Standard vaccinations under the STIKO schedule should be up to date.

Do you need a visa for Panama?

For tourist stays of up to 90 days you need no visa with a German passport. In individual cases the stay can be limited to 15 days. For longer stays, such as internships, volunteer work or employment, the German Federal Foreign Office names the Panamanian embassy in Berlin as the contact. For a residence permit (residencia), the page says a lawyer is required. Whether and which visa you need for studies in Panama is for the Panamanian diplomatic mission to say authoritatively. We do not state a rule of our own, because we found no official statement on it. The German Federal Foreign Office travel and security information for Panama sets out the entry rules for German citizens:

  • Passport or provisional passport. An identity card is not sufficient
  • Validity of at least three months on entry, and for the entire stay on longer visits
  • For longer stays, contact the Panamanian embassy in Berlin

According to the German Federal Foreign Office (page status 25 October 2026), travel to the east and south of the Darién jungle province south of Yaviza is strongly advised against, especially in the border area with Colombia. The situation in the country is otherwise calm. Demonstrations and road blockades, especially on the Panamericana, cannot be ruled out. In Panama City and Colón there is a risk of armed robbery.

What does a study abroad semester in Panama cost?

Tuition fees

Which fees apply at the host university depends on the exchange agreement of your university. We do not name a general amount, because we found no official figure for it. Ask your university and the host university before you accept the place.

Living costs

We do not name a verified monthly amount for living costs. Ask your host university for its budget for exchange students. A worked example is therefore not possible.

Funding: Erasmus+ and Auslands-BAföG

The European Commission lists Panama in the Latin America region among the third countries that are not associated with the programme. Individual Erasmus+ actions are possible only under certain conditions. Ask your International Office. More is in the guide Erasmus and planning a study abroad semester (in German).

Auslands-BAföG is possible for a partial study abroad. According to the assignment of the German Student Services, the Studierendenwerk Bremen, Amt für Ausbildungsförderung, is responsible for America excluding Canada and the USA (phone 0421/2201-0). According to the flyer (status January 2026), you must have studied at least one year in Germany beforehand. For countries outside the EU and Switzerland, a maximum of two semesters is funded, in rare cases up to five. Under certain conditions a monthly study abroad supplement is possible. Everything else is in the guide Auslands-BAföG: eligibility, amounts and supplements (in German).

How to prepare before you leave

  2. Take out travel health insurance with air ambulance and medical evacuation cover for the entire length of your stay.

  4. Check that your passport is valid for at least three months on entry.
  5. Have your vaccinations checked by a doctor. The German Federal Foreign Office names hepatitis A as a travel vaccination.
