Which statutory health insurance funds (German: Krankenkassen) with dental cleaning for students offer something useful depends less on the fund name than on its bylaws and your tariff. Professional dental cleaning is not a compulsory benefit of statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung, GKV) for adults. This guide explains where a subsidy can come from, what you pay yourself and what to check if you have private health insurance (private Krankenversicherung, PKV).

Short answer: Statutory health insurance does not cover professional dental cleaning for adults as a fixed compulsory benefit. Many funds pay a subsidy if their bylaws (Satzung) provide for it, and the amount differs from fund to fund. For dental prosthetics, the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) expects a fixed subsidy of 50 percent from 2027 instead of 60 percent, with 60 or 65 percent again for proven preventive care. The most important points

  • For insured people aged 18 and over, dental cleaning is not a compulsory benefit of statutory insurance (source: section 22 of the Social Code Book V, SGB V).
  • Subsidies for dental cleaning often come from the bylaws of the fund. Whether your fund pays one, and how much, is written there.
  • In private health insurance, your tariff decides on reimbursement, maximum amounts and limits.
  • The law to stabilise contributions provides for higher copayments and a lower dental prosthetics subsidy from 2027. The Bundestag passed it on 10 July 2026.
  • Ask your fund in writing before you book an appointment, so you know what will be paid.

What statutory health insurance covers for preventive dental care

The law sets a clear entitlement for children and young people. Insured persons between the age of six and eighteen can have a dental check-up once in each calendar half-year to prevent dental disease (section 22 (1) SGB V, accessed October 2026). For adults, the law does not regulate this preventive check-up in the same form. Dental cleaning is therefore usually a service you pay for yourself, or one that your fund voluntarily subsidises through its bylaws. Our guide on health insurance for students explains the general structure.

Professional dental cleaning removes tartar and plaque that brushing alone does not remove completely. It is usually billed privately, so keep it apart from the check-up benefit covered by your fund. If you mean only the routine examination, say so clearly to the practice and your fund, so that nobody misunderstands the request.

How much do you pay for a cleaning? A worked example

The figures below are invented to show the arithmetic. They do not describe the subsidy of any particular fund.

  1. Assumption: the dental cleaning costs 100 euros.
  2. Assumption: your fund pays a subsidy of 40 euros under its bylaws.
  3. Your own share is 100 minus 40, which equals 60 euros.
  4. With private health insurance you calculate in the same way, using the reimbursement rate and maximum amounts of your tariff.

What changes from 2027 for dental prosthetics and copayments?

The Bundestag passed the law to stabilise contributions in statutory health insurance on 10 July 2026 (press release of the BMG, status July 2026). According to the ministry, copayments rise by 50 percent. The fixed subsidy for dental prosthetics falls from 60 to 50 percent. People who can prove regular preventive care should again receive 60 or 65 percent (FAQ of the BMG, status October 2026). The ministry does not give the date on which the law takes effect in these statements. Check the current position before any larger treatment. For dental prosthetics this matters most, because the preventive bonus has a noticeable effect there.

When private health insurance can help with dental care

Private health insurance can cover dental treatment differently from a statutory fund. The tariff matters, not the name of the insurer. When you check a tariff, look at dental cleaning, dental prosthetics, dental treatment and maximum amounts. Whether a tariff suits you also depends on the contribution, your health and the course of your studies. An overview of typical dental benefits is in our article on student dental insurance. Frequently asked questions

Does statutory health insurance pay for dental cleaning in full?

No, not as a fixed compulsory benefit for adults. Whether a subsidy is paid depends on the bylaws of your fund, which also state the amount and conditions.

Can I check in advance what my fund pays?

Yes. Ask in writing whether the fund grants a subsidy for dental cleaning, how much it is and which proof it needs. That way you avoid surprises when the bill arrives.

Does the preventive bonus for dental prosthetics depend on dental cleaning?

The preventive bonus depends on regular, documented preventive care. Which appointments count is set out in the bonus booklet and in the rules of your fund. If in doubt, ask the fund to confirm which service is credited.

Is dental cleaning always reimbursed with private health insurance?

Not in general. The tariff sets whether dental cleaning is reimbursed and up to which amount. Read the benefit description and ask if something is unclear. Check the position and amount on every bill with dental cleaning.

What to do now

  1. Check the bylaws of your fund to see whether a subsidy for dental cleaning is provided.
  2. Ask your fund in writing about the amount, the conditions and the proof it needs.
  3. If you consider private health insurance, compare dental benefits, maximum amounts and limits in the tariff.
  4. Keep the bill and submit it with all required proof.
