Sickness Benefit for Students: Eligibility

Sickness benefit for students: why student health insurance usually gives no entitlement, the 2026 contribution rates and what to plan for.

Definition. Sickness benefit (Krankengeld) is an income replacement benefit of statutory health insurance, paid for longer periods of incapacity to work if an entitlement exists. Students in student health insurance (KVdS) and voluntary members usually have no entitlement to it. For them, a reduced contribution rate therefore applies. The additional contribution rate of your fund is charged on top.

Why students have no entitlement

Sickness benefit usually requires an employment relationship with continued pay or a comparable status. Studying does not create this entitlement. When you are ill, the insurance still pays for medical treatment, but the income replacement benefit is not paid. So plan reserves for times when illness keeps you from working.

An example of a longer illness

You are ill for two months as a student and cannot work. Your health insurance fund covers the medical treatment, but you do not receive sickness benefit. If you have a part-time job, its income falls away. A financial reserve built up in advance helps in situations like this.

Frequently asked questions

Do I get sickness benefit if I have a mini-job?

That depends on whether it gives you an entitlement to sickness benefit. A mini-job usually does not. Check your individual case with your health insurance fund.

Do I pay less contribution because I have no sickness benefit entitlement?

Yes, the reduced rate of 14.0 percent applies to members without an entitlement to sickness benefit. The additional contribution rate of your fund still applies on top.

Is there another safeguard against loss of income?

Private daily sickness benefit insurance can be an option, but its conditions and costs depend on the provider. Compare the offers carefully before you decide.
