Semester Off and Health Insurance: What Applies

Taking a semester off does not automatically end your student health insurance if you remain enrolled. Here is what counts and what to report.

Definition of semester off health insurance

A semester off (Urlaubssemester) is a semester in which you are on leave from your university and do not study. You remain enrolled. Under the joint basic guidelines of the umbrella associations (Grundsätzliche Hinweise, version 23 December 2025, section 1.1.1), compulsory insurance continues during leave with continued enrolment. Even so, semester off health insurance is worth checking, because your university must report your status.
