Which items make up the semester fee at the University of Hamburg?

The university shows the fee as the sum of several items. Each item has its own purpose, which the page briefly describes. The table shows the amounts for the winter semester 2026/27 in the order used on the page.

According to the university, the total is reduced to 352 euros in the case of several consecutive leaves of absence (Urlaubssemester) and for students in programmes, with the exception of the Europa-Kolleg. Arithmetically, the reduced amount corresponds to the fee without the administration fee of 50 euros. Whether the reduction applies to you should be clarified with the student office (Studierendenservice) before you pay.

The semester ticket is by far the largest item. Our guide Semester Ticket and Germany Ticket: Student Travel Costs explains what it offers and how to fit it into your everyday life.

How do you convert the amount into a monthly figure?

The university states amounts per semester. For the conversion, we assume six months per semester. The worked example below shows the order of magnitude, while the sums themselves come from the university.

Assumption: six months per semesterAmount per semesterAmount per month
Fee without the administration fee352.00 euros58.67 euros
Total including the administration fee402.00 euros67.00 euros

If you save the monthly amount as a reserve, you will have the semester fee ready when it is due. You should still check the exact sum on the university page, because fees can change between semesters.

When do you have to pay, and what if the deadline has passed?

According to the university page (last changed on 27 July 2026), two dates apply to re-enrolment: for the summer semester, the money must have arrived by 1 April at the latest, and for the winter semester by 1 October at the latest. The university recommends transferring four weeks before these dates so that the semester ticket is in place in time. The deadline for the winter semester 2026/27 passed in October 2026. The next deadline is 1 April 2027 for the summer semester 2027, and the recommendation leads to about 4 March 2027. The university has not yet published the fee for the summer semester 2027 on this page, so we do not give a figure for it.

If you have missed the payment, contact the student office of the university promptly. Ask whether you can still pay and which consequences apply to your re-enrolment. Our guide Semester Fee Deadline: Re-enrolment and Consequences explains the typical consequences of a missed deadline.

What do the individual items mean?

The hardship fund for the semester ticket is shown separately at 4.60 euros. The page describes it only briefly. You will learn which conditions apply to benefits from the fund from the university or from the student body. At 50 euros, the administration fee is the third-largest item after the ticket and the student services contribution. For your planning, it is important that the semester ticket is tied to the period of one semester, and that the other items are charged again every semester. If you keep an eye on the total each semester, you will notice changes sooner.

Frequently asked questions

Is the administration fee a fee?

The page lists it as a separate item of 50 euros and includes it in the total of 402 euros. The page gives no further justification. Ask the university if you want to know the legal basis.

Does the payment deadline also apply to first-semester students?

No. According to the page, the stated deadlines do not apply to first-time enrolees. If you are starting out, check the payment information in your enrolment documents carefully and ask if anything is unclear.

How much is the fee without the ticket share?

Arithmetically, 175.20 euros remain without the HVV semester ticket, because 402 euros minus 226.80 euros equals 175.20 euros. This is only a calculation. Whether the ticket share can be opted out of is decided by the university, not by this guide.

Where do I find the bank details for the transfer?

The bank details and the payment reference are on the university page and in the payment documents, not in this guide. Compare the details with the university page before you transfer. Do not accept bank details from unknown emails without checking them.

What is the student body, and why do I pay for it?

The statutory student body represents the interests of students and finances services for them. Its contribution is shown on the page as 19.60 euros. The student body itself describes which tasks this involves in detail.
