During a doctorate, pension contributions are often missing, especially when you are funded only by a scholarship. The gap is easy to overlook, yet it adds up over the years. This guide explains why a scholarship builds no pension entitlement, what voluntary contributions cost in 2026 and how to check your own gap in the German statutory pension system (gesetzliche Rentenversicherung).

Short answer: A pure PhD scholarship generally creates no compulsory pension contributions. During that time no pension contributions are made unless you pay voluntarily. In 2026 the minimum voluntary contribution is 112.16 euros per month (as of February 2026, Deutsche Rentenversicherung). If you hold a post subject to social insurance, contributions are paid automatically.

The most important points at a glance

  • A scholarship is generally not insurable employment, so it usually builds no pension entitlement.
  • A post subject to social insurance triggers pension contributions. At 3,093 euros gross, you pay 287.68 euros of them yourself.
  • Voluntary contributions cost at least 112.16 euros per month in 2026. The maximum is 1,571.70 euros.
  • Three years at the minimum cost 4,037.76 euros. Your pension statement shows what this means for your later pension.
  • Voluntary payments for the previous year were possible until 31 March. Earlier years have their own rules.

Why a scholarship does not fill your pension

Compulsory pension contributions in Germany are mainly linked to employment. If you receive a scholarship and do not work as an employee alongside it, you are usually not subject to compulsory pension insurance. The funding is then paid out without any contribution deduction. For your later pension this means that the time only counts if you pay voluntary contributions or another contribution period applies.

This differs from a post. A salary with social insurance deductions builds pension points, even if the gross figure looks lower at first sight. The comparison between a post and a scholarship with net amounts is in the guide Promotionsstelle oder Stipendium: Netto-Vergleich mit Rechenbeispiel (in German).

What happens with a PhD post?

With a post subject to social insurance, employer and employee share the pension contribution. The contribution rate for 2026 is 18.6 percent, and each side pays half (Federal Gazette announcement of contribution rates for 2026). The contribution assessment ceiling for 2026 is 8,450 euros per month. Part-time pay counts up to this ceiling.

Worked example (assumption: 65 percent post at step 1 of grade E 13 with 3,093.35 euros gross): the total contribution is about 575.36 euros per month. Your share is 9.3 percent, which is 287.68 euros. Your employer pays the same amount. The pay structure is explained in the guide Doktorand Gehalt 2026: TV-L E 13, Stufen und Teilzeit (in German).

Voluntary contributions: the 2026 figures

If you have no compulsory contribution during your doctorate, you can pay voluntary contributions. The German Pension Insurance (Deutsche Rentenversicherung) gives these reference values for 2026:

Figure 2026Amount
Minimum voluntary contribution (monthly)112.16 euros
Maximum voluntary contribution (monthly)1,571.70 euros
Contribution rate statutory pension insurance18.6 percent
Minor-employment threshold used as basis for the minimum603 euros

The minimum contribution is arithmetically 18.6 percent of 603 euros (minor-employment threshold 2026; source: § 8 SGB IV, Geringfügigkeitsgrenze). Source of the reference values: Deutsche Rentenversicherung, press release of 9 February 2026; contribution rate according to the contribution rate announcement 2026 (in German).

Worked example: three years of doctorate without compulsory contributions

Assumption: you pay the minimum contribution for 36 months. The total is 36 × 112.16 euros = 4,037.76 euros, or on average 1,345.92 euros per year. How much this adds to your later pension depends on the average earnings of each year. The German Pension Insurance calculates this in your pension statement, which is therefore the most reliable basis.

The minimum contribution is a small amount. Higher voluntary contributions bring more pension points, but they only make sense if your budget allows it. Do not decide without a pension statement. The advantage of voluntary contributions is that they are predictable: you know the monthly amount and can compare the total with your pension statement. A later post with social insurance can also close the gap again.

How to check your gap

Your pension statement (Rentenauskunft) shows which periods are already on your insurance account. You can request it online from the German Pension Insurance. Bring it into your planning: it shows whether your doctoral time already has gaps and which contributions are missing.

There are deadlines for payments. Voluntary contributions for the previous year could be paid until 31 March 2026. Ask the pension insurer to confirm the deadline for your payment in writing.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay into the pension automatically during a scholarship?

Usually not. A pure scholarship is not compulsory employment. Only a paid post with social insurance contributions or a voluntary payment builds pension entitlements. If you are unsure, ask the pension insurer about your case.

Is the voluntary minimum contribution worth it?

That depends on your situation. The minimum is the cheapest way to fill periods, but it brings only small pension points. If you have more budget, you can pay more. Compare it with other retirement options before you decide.

Does my doctoral time count as training time?

That depends on the pension insurance rules and on your insurance history. Your pension statement shows whether periods are credited. There is no blanket yes.

Must I close the gap immediately?

No. Voluntary contributions are a decision, not an obligation. You can decide each year again, depending on your finances. For older years, the pension insurer checks whether and until when payments are possible.

What happens when the post ends?

When the post ends, the contribution duty from that employment ends too. A follow-on job with social insurance or work abroad can change the position. For cases abroad, the pension insurer clarifies responsibility individually.

Is there a subsidy for pension contributions?

Not automatically. Some funding bodies have their own rules on retirement provision. Ask your scholarship provider whether the grant includes a pension element or any contribution.

What to do now

  1. Request your pension statement from the German Pension Insurance and check your periods.
  2. Compare a scholarship with a post that carries social insurance before you accept.
  3. Set a budget for voluntary contributions and note the deadlines in your calendar.
  4. If in doubt, use the pension advice service of the German Pension Insurance and check the result against your financial plan.
