Occupational disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU) for German studies (Germanistik) students depends on how your contract describes your later job. Editing, publishing, translation or public relations are typical paths after a degree in the humanities, and insurers do not assess them uniformly. This guide shows what to watch for regarding classification, health questions and provision.

Short answer: Last updated: October 2026. There is no fixed premium for German studies students. What matters is whether your career is described in the contract as employed work at a publisher or as freelance work such as translation. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Statistisches Bundesamt, Destatis), about 281,300 students were enrolled in the humanities (Geisteswissenschaften) in the winter semester 2025/26 (as of 26.08.2026).

The most important points at a glance

  • Under § 172 para. 2 of the Insurance Contract Act (VVG, Versicherungsvertragsgesetz), you are occupationally disabled if you can no longer perform the occupation you last practised. For a degree without a fixed professional qualification, the description in the application is what counts.
  • Editing, editorial work and translation can be classified differently, depending on whether you work as an employee or as a freelancer.
  • For German studies graduates, screen work, long periods of sitting, neck, eyes and psychological strain are typical health topics in the application.
  • If you want to teach at a school later, consider teacher training (Lehramt) separately. Different rules on unfitness for service (Dienstunfähigkeit) apply there.
  • The premium depends on your age at entry, your health, your occupational group and the scope of benefits. Only identical benefits can be compared.

Which career paths after German studies count as what?

A degree in German studies rarely leads directly to a protected professional title. Insurers therefore assess the specific activity. The table shows which questions come up for typical paths.

Career pathTypical question from the insurerWhat to check in the application
Editing at a publisher, as an employeeIs the activity mainly screen work in an office?State employer, job description and working hours
Freelance translationHow are assignments and income distributed?Document languages, clients and periods
Editorial work at media companiesAre there on-site appointments or travel?Describe the activity with shares for office work and external appointments
Press office or public relationsIs it administration or communication?State areas of responsibility and management tasks concretely
Archive or libraryIs the job a public-sector post?State employer and any fixed-term nature

The table shows typical questions, not binding classifications. The tariff of your insurer is decisive. If the focus shifts between areas, the assessment can change as well. The referral clause under § 172 para. 3 VVG then also determines which activity can reasonably be expected of you.

How should you answer the health questions correctly?

The application asks about pre-existing conditions, treatments, medication and complaints. For humanities scholars who spend many hours at a desk, back, neck, eyes and sleep are typical topics. Psychological strain such as exhaustion, anxiety or depressive phases is often asked about as well. Under § 19 para. 1 VVG, you have a duty to disclose (Anzeigepflicht) the circumstances the insurer has asked about in text form. Gesetze im Internet: § 19 VVG (Last updated: 26.10.2026).

  1. Note treatments for back pain, vision problems or psychological strain, with date and duration.
  2. Also state mild but recurring complaints if the application asks about them.
  3. If a finding is unknown, write that in the application instead of guessing.

A note on this: if you answer incompletely, you risk the insurer withdrawing from the contract. Paragraph 3 of the provision protects you only against a breach that was neither intentional nor grossly negligent. If you are unsure, ask before you sign.

How much cover does a humanities graduate need?

The premium question can only be answered once your age at entry, your health, your occupational group and the amount of pension are fixed. Without these details, figures from comparison portals say little. For the pension amount, what matters is what you need to live on if you cannot work, not what you earn during your studies.

Assume you start as an editor in a salaried job and later want to translate freelance. Assume you need 1,000 euros a month in case of disability for rent and living costs. The occupational disability pension should then cover this sum, whatever form your work takes. Moving to freelance work is the point at which tariffs differ most.

How large is the humanities group?

German studies belongs to the subject group humanities (Geisteswissenschaften) in official statistics. This group also includes history, philosophy and linguistics. The table shows the size of this group compared with two other subject groups.

Subject group, winter semester 2025/26Students in totalInternational studentsShare of international students
Humanities281,31539,46914.0 percent
Agricultural, forestry and nutrition sciences, veterinary medicine58,2809,99217.1 percent
Human medicine and health sciences215,42423,96411.1 percent

Source: Federal Statistical Office (Statistisches Bundesamt), table 2.5.77, last updated 26.08.2026. The share is a calculation of our own, based on the figures above. The humanities group is the largest of the three, but it says nothing about the incomes of graduates.

Is it worth taking out occupational disability insurance during your studies?

A policy taken out during your studies benefits from a low entry age and usually good health. Against that, the career path often only becomes clear after the Master’s degree, and the classification can then be reassessed. If you already work in a publishing job, you can describe that activity in the application now. If you are still deciding, you can later check whether the insurer asks the health questions differently.

Frequently asked questions

Does freelance translation count as its own occupation?

Yes, if you practise it as your main occupation. In the application, state the languages, the clients and the approximate scope. Fluctuating assignments are not an obstacle, but they must be described in a traceable way.

What if I first work as a working student (Werkstudentin) at a publisher?

Then the activity is classified the way it is described in the application. It is important to state the scope and type of work correctly. If the activity changes after your degree, the tariff should cover the change.

Is the cover also valid for a doctorate?

A doctorate is not a separate occupation but an additional qualification. If you work as a research assistant after your doctorate, you are usually classified according to that activity. If in doubt, ask how the tariff assesses research posts.

Is the statutory disability pension an alternative?

No, it does not replace private cover. Under § 43 para. 1 SGB VI, you need three years of mandatory contributions in the last five years. Many students do not meet this requirement, and the pension depends on your insurance history. Gesetze im Internet: § 43 SGB VI (Last updated: 26.10.2026).

Your next steps

  1. Describe your intended career path in the application, including employment, freelance work and possible changes.
  2. Have the tariff confirm in writing how it classifies editing, editorial work and translation.
  3. Check the referral clause under § 172 para. 3 VVG against your career path.
  4. Answer the health questions completely and keep a copy of the application.
