Occupational disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU) for music and art students starts with a question that many guides skip: which job does the contract describe for you? If you study music, art or art history, you often plan a freelance or artistic career. That is exactly where insurers’ classifications differ the most.

Short answer: Last updated: October 2026. There is no fixed premium for music and art students. What matters is how your future job is classified in the contract, for example as a musician, artist, teacher or employee. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Statistisches Bundesamt, Destatis), about 99,200 students were enrolled in the subject group art and art studies in the winter semester 2025/26 (as of 26.08.2026). Clarify the classification in writing before you apply.

The most important points at a glance

  • Under § 172 para. 2 of the Insurance Contract Act (VVG, Versicherungsvertragsgesetz), you are occupationally disabled if you can no longer perform the occupation you last practised. During your studies, the career you aim for and describe in the application is what counts.
  • Artistic, freelance and teaching activities are assessed differently. Which classification applies is set out in the tariff.
  • Hearing, hands, shoulders, back and voice are particular health topics for musicians and artists, and they can play a role in the application.
  • The statutory disability pension (Rente wegen Erwerbsminderung) requires mandatory contributions (Pflichtbeiträge), and many students do not have enough of them.
  • The premium depends on your age at entry, your health, your occupational group and the scope of benefits. Only offers with the same benefits can be compared.

How is a music or art degree classified?

Insurers classify occupations by the activity, not by the degree programme. For students, the classification therefore relies on the description in the application. The table below shows typical situations and the questions behind them.

ActivityTypical question from the insurerWhat to check in the application
Orchestra work as an employeeIs the activity employed and paid at a fixed rate?State the type of contract, scope of work and employer precisely
Freelance performances and gigsHow much do earnings fluctuate?Document fees and clients over several years
Teaching at a music schoolIs teaching a separate occupational group?Check the referral clause under § 172 para. 3 VVG
Fine art with exhibitions and salesIs the work assessed as self-employment or as a side job?State self-employment and income clearly
Part-time job at a gallery or museumIs it supervision, cash handling or brokering?Describe the tasks concretely

The table shows typical situations, not binding classifications. Which occupational group your insurer assigns is set out in the tariff terms. If in doubt, ask in writing before you sign the application.

Which health questions matter most in music and art?

The application asks about pre-existing conditions, treatments and complaints. For musicians, hearing problems, tinnitus, tension in the shoulders and neck, tendon irritation in the hands, or performance anxiety that requires medical treatment can be relevant. Visual artists who spend long periods hunched over their work should also note complaints of the musculoskeletal system. Under § 19 para. 1 VVG, you have a duty to disclose (Anzeigepflicht) the circumstances the insurer has asked about in text form. Gesetze im Internet: § 19 VVG (Last updated: 26.10.2026).

  1. Record doctor visits, diagnoses and time periods, even if they go back a long way.
  2. Note complaints affecting your hearing, hands, shoulders or voice, even if they hardly limit you in daily life.
  3. Answer every question completely. If you do not know a finding, state that expressly.

Under § 19 para. 2 VVG, the insurer can withdraw from the contract if you breach the duty to disclose. Under para. 3, withdrawal is excluded if the breach was neither intentional nor grossly negligent. Do not rely on that, however, because claims are examined closely. Gesetze im Internet: § 19 VVG (Last updated: 26.10.2026).

What determines the premium for music and art studies?

There is no universal sum. Your age at entry, your state of health, your occupational group, the desired pension amount and the term determine the premium. In artistic occupations, tariffs also classify such activities differently. Offers are only comparable if the benefits and the classification match.

Assume you are 23, healthy and plan a freelance career with concerts and teaching. Assume your goal is a monthly disability pension of 1,200 euros. Whether this amount is right depends on your fixed costs if you cannot work, not on what you earn while studying. If you receive only fees, use the average of several years, otherwise the pension will be set too high or too low.

What does statutory cover look like?

The former occupational disability pension of the statutory pension insurance no longer applies to younger people. Its successor is the statutory disability pension (Rente wegen Erwerbsminderung). Under § 43 para. 1 of the German Social Code Book VI (SGB VI, Sozialgesetzbuch VI), you need three years of mandatory contributions in the last five years, plus the general waiting period (allgemeine Wartezeit). You are partially disabled if, for an indefinite period, you can work less than six hours a day. You are fully disabled if you can work less than three hours a day. Gesetze im Internet: § 43 SGB VI (Last updated: 26.10.2026).

For music and art students, this matters because study periods often pass without mandatory contributions. Mini-jobs and working-student positions can bring contributions, but freelance income does not automatically do so. The Artists’ Social Insurance Fund (Künstlersozialversicherung) covers health, long-term care and pension insurance, not occupational disability insurance.

How large is the music and art student group?

Music belongs to the subject group art and art studies in official statistics. The individual subjects are not reported separately there, so the group gives only a rough picture. According to Destatis, art colleges (Kunsthochschulen) recorded a provisional 38,100 students in the winter semester 2025/26. When does an occupational disability policy make sense during your studies, and when later?

A policy taken out during your studies benefits from a low entry age, usually good health and often simpler health questions. On the other side, your future occupation is still open, and premiums in this phase can be calculated tightly. If you already have regular performances, teaching or exhibitions planned, you can clarify the classification now.

Frequently asked questions

Does an artistic side job count as an occupation?

On the application, what counts is the activity you actually carry out. A side job as a museum attendant is something different from a concert engagement. If you do both, state both and describe the scope and remuneration. Incomplete information is the biggest risk.

Do I have to say that I study music if I am not yet working?

The application usually asks for your intended occupation or your current activity. State your studies and your career goal openly, so that the classification is clear. A written query to the insurer before you sign helps if you are unsure.

What happens if I drop out of my studies?

A signed contract remains in force. However, the classification can change with your later occupation. Check whether the tariff provides for a change of occupation and which notification duties apply.

Is the statutory disability pension enough?

Its amount depends on the pension entitlements you have built up. For many students it does not come close to the income an artistic career is meant to provide. If you only work freelance occasionally, you often do not meet the requirements. The pension is therefore a supplement, not a replacement for private cover.

What if I work freelance after my studies?

Then self-employment is the normal case, and this must be stated in the contract. If the activity changes later, for example from concerts to teaching, the insurer checks whether the referral clause applies. Ask in advance how the tariff treats such changes.

Your next steps

  1. Describe your intended occupation in the application precisely, including employment or self-employment, performances, teaching and exhibitions.
  2. Ask in writing how insurers classify musicians, artists and teachers in the tariff you are considering.
  3. Read the referral clause under § 172 para. 3 VVG and check whether it covers your teaching activities.
  4. Answer the health questions completely and keep a copy of the application.
