If you want to calculate your net salary in Germany in 2026, you deduct social security contributions and income tax from your gross pay. Social security contributions (Sozialabgaben) can be checked yourself with the current contribution rates. Income tax (Lohnsteuer) depends on your tax class and allowances and should be checked with the official calculator of the Federal Ministry of Finance.

Short answer: For a gross monthly salary of EUR 3,500, employee social security contributions in Germany in 2026 come to roughly EUR 740 to 761, depending on whether the childless surcharge applies (Last updated: October 2026, rates per GKV-Spitzenverband and Deutsche Rentenversicherung). Income tax comes on top and can only be determined precisely with the BMF calculator.

Key points at a glance

  • Your net salary is your gross salary minus social security contributions, income tax and, where applicable, the solidarity surcharge and church tax.
  • As an employee you pay about 21.15 percent of your gross salary in social security contributions in 2026. With the childless surcharge the share is 21.75 percent.
  • Health insurance contributions depend on the additional contribution rate of your fund. The average was 2.9 percent in 2026 (as of 1 January 2026).
  • Contributions stop above the contribution ceilings. For health and long-term care insurance the 2026 ceiling is EUR 5,812.50 per month.
  • You do not calculate income tax yourself. Use the BMF calculator instead.

How to get from gross to net

The calculation always follows the same order. These steps give you a reliable estimate:

  1. Start with your gross monthly salary, as stated in your employment contract.
  2. Deduct the social security contributions: health, long-term care, pension and unemployment insurance, each with the employee share.
  3. Determine income tax with the BMF calculator. You need gross salary, tax class, church affiliation and federal state.
  4. Deduct the solidarity surcharge and church tax if applicable. The result is your net salary.

Which social security contributions apply in 2026?

Employers and employees share social security contributions. The table shows the rates and your share. Each rate is valid since the date stated.

InsuranceTotal rateYour shareSource and status
Health insurance14.6 percent plus additional rate (average 2.9 percent)7.3 percent plus half the additional rate, so 8.75 percent at 2.9 percentGKV-Spitzenverband, as of 1 January 2026
Long-term care insurance3.6 percent1.8 percent, plus 0.6 percentage points for childless people aged 23 and over (2.4 percent in total)BMG, valid since 1 January 2025
Pension insurance18.6 percent9.3 percentContribution rate notice 2026
Unemployment insurance2.6 percent1.3 percentSection 341 (2) SGB III, status 2026

In total, the employee share is 21.15 percent, or 21.75 percent with the childless surcharge. Regional special rules, for example for long-term care insurance in some federal states, are not included in this overview.

Worked example with EUR 3,500 gross

Assumption: full-time, first job after graduation, tax class I, statutory health insurance with an additional rate of 2.9 percent, gross salary EUR 3,500 per month, below all contribution ceilings.

DeductionWithout childless surchargeWith childless surcharge
Health insurance (8.75 percent)EUR 306.25EUR 306.25
Long-term care insurance (1.8 or 2.4 percent)EUR 63.00EUR 84.00
Pension insurance (9.3 percent)EUR 325.50EUR 325.50
Unemployment insurance (1.3 percent)EUR 45.50EUR 45.50
Social security contributions in totalEUR 740.25EUR 761.25
Salary after social security, before income taxEUR 2,759.75EUR 2,738.75

Income tax is then deducted from these amounts in your payslip. Determine it with the BMF calculator using the same inputs. The childless surcharge applies to insured people aged 23 and over who have no children (status 2026, source: BMG).

Why income tax is not part of this calculation

Income tax depends on the tax class, allowances and deductible insurance contributions. This guide therefore does not calculate it. Two fixed figures help you understand the logic: the basic allowance (Grundfreibetrag) is EUR 12,348 per year in 2026 (section 32a EStG). The employee lump sum (Arbeitnehmerpauschbetrag) is EUR 1,230 per year (section 9a EStG). Both reduce your taxable income, but they are not a concrete tax payment.

Comparing gross and net offers properly

If you compare two job offers by gross salary, the difference says little about your net result. Assumption: at EUR 300 more gross, about EUR 237 remains after social security contributions of 21.15 percent. Income tax is still to be deducted. Calculate both offers with the same inputs in the BMF calculator.

Which limits matter?

The contribution ceiling caps contributions. For health and long-term care insurance it is EUR 5,812.50 per month in 2026 (EUR 69,750 per year). For pension and unemployment insurance it is EUR 8,450 per month (EUR 101,400 per year, status 2026, GKV-Spitzenverband and Deutsche Rentenversicherung). If you earn more, your net salary and contributions no longer rise in the same proportion.

Worked example with EUR 5,000 gross

Assumption: as above, but gross salary of EUR 5,000 per month. All amounts again stay below the contribution ceilings.

DeductionWithout childless surchargeWith childless surcharge
Health insurance (8.75 percent)EUR 437.50EUR 437.50
Long-term care insurance (1.8 or 2.4 percent)EUR 90.00EUR 120.00
Pension insurance (9.3 percent)EUR 465.00EUR 465.00
Unemployment insurance (1.3 percent)EUR 65.00EUR 65.00
Social security contributions in totalEUR 1,057.50EUR 1,087.50

The share therefore stays at about 21 percent. Contributions rise in proportion to your salary as long as you stay under the contribution ceiling. Income tax is progressive, so your net salary can change more strongly than the contributions suggest.

Common mistakes when recalculating

  • Using the average additional rate although your fund charges a different rate.
  • Forgetting that only half of the additional rate is paid by you.
  • Ignoring one-off payments such as a Christmas bonus. They change contributions and income tax in the month they are paid.
  • Overlooking the childless surcharge, which applies from age 23 without children.
  • Ignoring benefits in kind such as a company car or pension contributions. They can change the assessment base.

Frequently asked questions

Is the result from the calculator exact?

The contribution calculation is exact if you use the rates above. The income tax result is only as precise as the inputs you use in the BMF calculator. Your employer may also use a different additional rate if your fund charges a different one.

Does my employer pay the other half?

Yes. For health, long-term care, pension and unemployment insurance your employer generally pays the same share as you. You alone pay the childless surcharge.

Does this apply to civil servants?

No. Civil servants (Beamte) do not pay contributions to statutory social insurance in this form. They receive civil service pay and state health aid (Beihilfe), so this calculation does not apply to them.

Why does my net salary change from year to year?

Contribution rates, contribution ceilings, allowances and the additional rate of your fund change each year. Repeat the calculation at the start of the year with the current figures.

What to do next

  1. Note your gross monthly salary from your employment contract and your tax class.
  2. Check the additional rate of your health insurance fund and enter it into the calculation.
  3. Calculate the social security contributions with the table above and check whether the childless surcharge applies to you.
  4. Determine income tax with the BMF calculator and compare the result with your first payslip.
