Modal for students is mainly interesting if your project needs more computing power than your laptop can deliver. Modal is a cloud platform where you run Python code, including on graphics processors (GPUs), without setting up your own servers.

Short answer: Modal offers programme credits for academic use on its Academics page. According to the provider, graduate students, labs and researchers can receive up to 10,000 US dollars. The page names no countries and no duration. The starter plan includes 30 US dollars in credits per month (last updated: October 2026, offers change often).

The essentials

  • Modal is a cloud platform for Python code, including GPUs. You pay for actual usage.
  • For academic use, the provider names up to 10,000 US dollars in programme credits (last updated October 2026).
  • Whether you can apply alone or need a research group is shown on the Academics page. It has no list of countries.
  • According to the pricing page, the starter plan has no base fee and includes 30 US dollars in credits per month.
  • Exam regulations, your university’s rules and data protection apply regardless of the offer.

What is Modal and what is it used for?

Modal provides computing power that you start when you need it. You write a function in Python, specify the hardware it needs, and Modal runs it in the cloud. Prices depend on usage and are listed on the provider’s pricing page.

Typical uses at university include fine-tuning small models, processing large datasets in batches, and short experiments that need a powerful graphics card. For a thesis with heavy computing, this can be more economical than a computer with its own graphics card, depending on the scale.

Offers at a glance

Modal has three options that differ in price and target group. The table summarises what the provider’s pages state.

How to activate the offer

To use the academics programme, proceed as follows:

  1. Open the Modal Academics page and read the details on credits, target group and process in full.
  2. Check whether graduate students can apply alone or whether a research group is required.
  3. Sign up via the page to receive information about the grant programmes.
  4. Have ready the proof the provider requires. The page states which proof counts.
  5. After activation, check how many credits are available and until when they are valid.

Does the offer apply in Germany?

Modal’s Academics page does not list countries. The provider decides whether your university is included and whether a university email address is enough. Clarify this before you apply and before you plan around the credits.

What does use cost after the programme?

Once the credits are used up or the programme ends, regular prices apply. The amounts are on the pricing page and may change. Use this list to keep track of your usage:

  1. Estimate how much hardware and time each larger run will need before you start it.
  2. Test the code on a small sample before you start the full dataset.
  3. Check your account after each session to see how much credit has been used.
  4. Calculate the cost per run. Assumption: a run takes two hours on one GPU. The cost is then two hours multiplied by the hourly price for that GPU on the pricing page.

Which rules apply to AI and data?

Three principles apply to AI projects in the cloud. Your university’s examination regulations and guidelines take priority over any offer. Do not enter personal data or unpublished research data into scripts or notebooks until you have confirmed that this is allowed. Check AI output yourself before you use it. More on this in Data protection for AI tools at university (in German).

What happens after your studies?

Many student offers depend on your status. Once you are de-registered, access can end or change. Check early whether the programme continues after graduation, and keep code, configurations and results on storage you control. Whether and for how long your account stays usable, and what happens to unused credits, is set out on the provider’s page. For deadlines and licences, see Free software for data science and machine learning at university (in German).

Frequently asked questions

Is Modal free for students?

According to the provider, graduate students, labs and researchers can receive programme credits of up to 10,000 US dollars. Whether and for how long they apply to you is shown on the Academics page. Without checking, do not assume that use stays free of charge in the long run.

Do I need a university email address?

That depends on the offer. Academic programmes often require proof of your university. The provider’s terms state which proof is accepted. Keep an enrolment certificate ready in case your email address alone is not enough.

Can I use the credits for my thesis?

That is possible if the terms allow academic use. Check them before you upload data or train models. Your university’s rules on computing resources and data also apply.

Do I need to know Python?

Modal is aimed at people who write Python. If you only know notebooks, the examples in the provider’s documentation are a good starting point. For courses that use notebooks, a browser environment often fits better, such as Google Colab for students (in German).

Is Modal better than Google Colab?

That cannot be said in general. Colab suits notebooks in the browser, while Modal suits scripts and jobs that you start deliberately in the cloud. The right tool depends on your project and your budget.

How do I know whether an offer is still current?

The provider’s page shows the terms, the end date and the current status. If that page differs from this guide, the provider’s page applies. This text reflects the status of October 2026.

What to do now

  1. Open the Modal Academics page and read the terms, duration and proof requirements.
  2. Check whether you can apply as an individual or whether a research group is required.
  3. Set up a small test run and measure duration and usage before you start larger projects.
  4. After the test run, compare with an alternative from Related reading before you commit.
