If you start a legal traineeship (Rechtsreferendariat) in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, two questions come up quickly: how will I live over the next two years, and how am I insured? In this state the traineeship is funded through a Unterhaltsbeihilfe, a maintenance allowance. This guide explains what to check on the amount, health insurance and side jobs, and where you get binding information.

Short answer: During the legal traineeship in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern you receive a maintenance allowance, not the trainee pay that teacher trainees receive. The competent state office gives you the current amount in writing. Whether you are covered by statutory or private health insurance depends on your status. We do not state a figure we could not verify. Last updated: October 2026.

The Most Important Points

  • The legal traineeship in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is funded by a maintenance allowance. State law lists it separately from trainee pay (Gesetz- und Verordnungsblatt MV 2024, No. 15, p. 407).
  • The competent office confirms the current amount in writing. Ask about the amount, the payment schedule and how long it applies.
  • Your health insurance depends on your status. Clarify it before the training starts.
  • The general statutory health insurance contribution rate is 14.6 percent in 2026. The average additional contribution is 2.9 percent, but your fund may charge a different rate.
  • Clarify any side job with your training office before you sign a contract.

How high is the maintenance allowance in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern?

The maintenance allowance is a state benefit paid during training. For this guide we did not find a current amount from an official source that we could verify for 2026, so we do not quote a figure. For context, the state government draft for the 2026 pay adjustment plans a 2.8 percent increase from 1 April 2026. The draft does not show how this affects the maintenance allowance, so ask directly.

Which health insurance fits a legal traineeship?

Your route into health insurance depends on your status during the training. Statutory members pay a contribution based on their income. If you are entitled to Beihilfe (state health aid), you usually combine it with private health insurance. Both options have trade-offs. Statutory cover is available without a health check. Private cover can be cheaper depending on the tariff, but it requires an acceptance check and carries the risk of rising premiums. Our guide on health insurance during the traineeship explains how Beihilfe and tariff work together.

Calculation example (assumption: contributory income of 1,000 euros per month, employee share only): the general rate of 14.6 percent plus the average additional contribution of 2.9 percent gives 17.5 percent. Half of it, 8.75 percent or 87.50 euros, is paid by the member. Long-term care insurance adds half of 3.6 percent, that is 1.8 percent or 18.00 euros. For childless members the share rises by the surcharge to 2.4 percent or 24.00 euros. Your actual amount depends on your fund and your status.

Can I work alongside the legal traineeship?

Side jobs are a frequent question during the traineeship, because the training takes a lot of time and the allowance alone does not cover every lifestyle. Your training office sets the rules. Ask about approval requirements, the permitted scope and any effect on the maintenance allowance. A written answer is worth much more than a verbal assurance.

Step by step: working out your budget during the traineeship

  1. List all monthly income: the maintenance allowance at the amount confirmed in writing, plus any other payments you are entitled to.
  2. Deduct health and long-term care insurance. Check the premium with your fund or your tariff.
  3. Plan rent, travel and living costs. Use assumptions you can document, such as a rental offer.
  4. Check whether a side job is permitted and what it brings after tax before you include it.
  5. Set aside a buffer for exam months and study materials.

What changes compared with teacher training?

In teacher training the funding works differently, because trainees receive trainee pay. The rules and figures are in our guide to teacher training in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. If you compare law and teaching, keep the two systems apart. The legal traineeship is about the maintenance allowance, teacher training is about trainee pay.

Frequently asked questions

Do legal trainees in MV receive trainee pay?

The state law we reviewed lists trainee pay and the maintenance allowance as separate categories. The training office confirms which one applies to you. Clarify this before you make decisions about insurance or housing.

Who pays my health insurance during the traineeship?

It depends on your status. If you are entitled to Beihilfe, you combine it with a tariff. With statutory insurance you pay an income-based contribution. Ask for your status in writing and compare with your fund before you cancel anything.

Do I have to report side income?

In most cases the training office must be informed about a side job. Whether and how income affects the maintenance allowance is decided case by case. Incomplete information can have consequences, so ask before you start.

Where do I get binding figures?

Binding information comes from the competent state justice ministry and the examination office. Ask in writing for the current amount and how long it applies. Examples in this guide do not replace that information.

What does Beihilfe give me during the traineeship?

Beihilfe refunds part of your medical costs if you are entitled to it. The rest must be covered by a tariff. The basics are explained in our guide to civil servant health aid during training.

What to do now

  1. Ask your training office to confirm your status, the maintenance allowance and the side job rules in writing.
  2. Clarify your health insurance before the start date with your fund or an offer for the tariff.
  3. Calculate your budget with the assumptions from this guide and replace them with real figures.
  4. Plan a buffer for the exam phase.
  5. If questions remain, get personal advice from academycon: how we work.
