Choosing health insurance as an international student in Germany starts with one question: are you compulsorily insured or exempt? For most students, the duty to join statutory health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung, GKV) applies up to the age limit of 30, regardless of nationality. This guide explains which proof universities ask for, when a home insurance is not enough and what to check about the language of a fund’s service.

Short answer: Students at German universities are generally compulsorily insured in statutory health insurance until they turn 30. According to a university checklist (status winter semester 2022/2023), insurance from your home country is in most cases not accepted. The average statutory contribution for students in 2026 is 87,38 euros plus the additional contribution of your fund. Last updated: October 2026.

The most important points

  • The duty depends on your status as a student, not on your nationality (source: section 5 (1) no. 9 SGB V).
  • According to the university checklist, home-country insurance is in most cases not accepted. Ask your university.
  • According to the same checklist, cover starts at the earliest with enrolment. For the time before that, extra travel insurance can make sense.
  • Preparatory courses, German courses and doctoral study are treated differently from a degree programme. Clarify your status first.
  • Whether a fund offers English documents or service depends on the fund and can change. Ask before you commit.

Who has to join statutory health insurance in Germany?

The duty results from your status as a student at a university. The age limit matters here: compulsory insurance for students ends when you turn 30 (section 5 (1) no. 9 SGB V, accessed October 2026). This rule applies equally to international students. Before you enrol, check whether a special situation applies to you. An exemption is possible only under certain conditions. The application generally has to be made within three months of the duty starting (section 8 SGB V, accessed October 2026).

The table is based on the university checklist with status winter semester 2022/2023 (checklist on health insurance, University of Heidelberg (in German)). Rules may have changed since then, so always follow the current information from your university.

Which proof does the university ask for?

Universities usually ask for proof of your health insurance when you enrol. According to the checklist mentioned above, you can contact your fund before you submit the documents. In some cases an electronic transmission of your insurance status to the university is possible. Students from countries with social security agreements may need proof of entitlement from their home country, for example an EHIC or GHIC or a comparable form from home.

Visa and enrolment rules depend on the country and the responsible German mission abroad. This guide cannot make a statement for your country of origin. Ask the responsible mission and your university for the current requirements.

What does statutory health insurance cost for students?

Students have their own contribution rate: it is 7/10 of the general rate. Based on 855 euros per month, the contribution for health insurance in 2026 is 87,38 euros without the additional contribution (status 1 January 2026, GKV-Spitzenverband). The additional contribution of your fund comes on top. With the average additional contribution of 2.9 percent, that is 24,80 euros (information from the BMG on contributions, status September 2026). Together, health insurance comes to 112,18 euros.

Status: October 2026. The figures are calculation values for 2026. The additional contribution depends on your fund.

Which language does the fund offer? What to check

Many questions are easier to answer when you know the language of the service. Whether a fund offers English documents, a hotline or an online area in English differs from fund to fund and can change. Look on the fund’s website, ask in writing before you join and request confirmation. Also make sure your proof reaches the university in exactly the form it requires. If you do not understand a document, ask for a translation or a conversation before you sign anything.

You choose a fund by benefits, contribution, service and availability. A comparison of individual funds is not part of this guide. If you are unsure which form of cover suits your situation, a conversation helps more than a general answer. An overview of the differences is in our German article on student health insurance: PKV or GKV (in German).

Frequently asked questions

Does the duty to insure also apply to students from abroad?

Yes, for most students at German universities the duty applies regardless of nationality. What matters is your status as a student. Also check whether an agreement or an exemption applies to you.

Is my insurance from my home country enough?

In most cases not, at least according to the university checklist cited here. Ask your university whether it accepts foreign insurance. An exemption is possible only under certain conditions.

When does insurance cover start?

According to the checklist, cover starts at the earliest with enrolment. For the period before that, for example on arrival, extra travel insurance can make sense. Clarify the gap with your fund and your university.

What happens when I turn 30?

The student insurance duty ends at the age limit. The checklist names proof of private health insurance in Germany for students aged 30 and over. Clarify early which form applies to you.

What to do now

  1. Ask your university which proof it requires for enrolment.
  2. Check whether your home insurance is accepted and whether a social security agreement applies.
  3. Ask the funds in writing about the contribution, the documents and the language of the service.
  4. Submit the proof in good time before the deadline and keep copies.
