If you come from India to study in Germany, you need health insurance that works for your visa and your university enrolment. Two bodies set the requirements: the German mission in India for the visa, and the university and your health insurance fund for compulsory cover. This guide explains the basics and shows which questions to clarify in advance.

Short answer: For a study place in Germany you usually need to show proof of health insurance that the German mission and your university accept. Whether you must join statutory student insurance (gesetzliche studentische Versicherung) or can be exempt depends on your situation. The statutory student contribution in 2026 came to about 143 euros a month without the childless surcharge. Last updated: October 2026.

The most important points at a glance

  • The German mission responsible in India sets the visa and insurance requirements. Its current information sheet is the binding reference.
  • At enrolment, the university checks whether statutory cover exists or an exemption applies.
  • Compulsory insurance for students follows from enrolment (§ 5 SGB V). An exemption is possible only under conditions (§ 8 SGB V).
  • The statutory student contribution depends on the contribution basis, not on nationality.
  • Insurance from India does not automatically replace the German proof. Clarify this before you travel.

Which proof does the German mission require?

For a student visa, the mission usually asks for your admission from the university, proof of financial means and proof of health insurance. Which documents you need exactly is set out in the information sheet of the mission responsible for you. This applies whether you apply at the embassy or at a consulate general. Requirements change, so the current sheet is always the binding source.

The amount of a blocked account (Sperrkonto) is also set by the German mission, and the sums differ by country and year. This guide therefore deliberately gives no figure for India. Ask the embassy in New Delhi or the responsible consulate general for the current amount.

Statutory or private: what you need to know

Compulsory insurance for students follows from § 5 SGB V and starts with enrolment, not with nationality. Whether an exemption is possible depends on your individual case and is bound to conditions (§ 8 SGB V). Your university and your health insurance fund check together whether cover from India is sufficient. A private policy must meet the visa and university requirements, not just be cheap.

What does statutory student insurance cost?

Contributions are calculated under the same rules for all students. What matters is the contribution basis, which for students living away from their parents is 855 euros a month (§ 236 SGB V). The table shows an example.

Item (assumption: 855 euro basis, additional contribution 2.9 percent, under 23)Amount per month
Health insurance without additional contribution (10.22 percent)87.38 euros
Additional contribution (average, depends on your fund)24.80 euros
Long-term care (3.6 percent)30.78 euros
Total142.96 euros

This total is a calculation with average values. Your actual additional contribution is in your fund’s notice. From age 23 the childless surcharge applies if you have no children.

Is private insurance an alternative?

For students from India, private cover can be considered if an exemption from statutory insurance is possible. Private tariffs, however, involve health screening, benefit limits and tariff rules that you must check. Compare the benefit descriptions, not only the monthly premium. The guide on private insurance for international students (in German) gives an overview of the particularities.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Indian health insurance enough for the visa?

The German mission decides this under its information sheet. A foreign policy must prove benefits, coverage and term. Ask in writing before you buy, and have the terms translated if needed.

Do I have to show proof of insurance when enrolling?

Usually yes. The university typically asks for proof of insurance at enrolment. Bring all documents, including certificates from your fund or insurer.

How high is the blocked account?

The responsible German mission sets the amount and adjusts it. Ask the embassy in New Delhi or the responsible consulate general for the current figure before you transfer any money.

When does compulsory insurance start?

Compulsory insurance for students begins with enrolment. Until then you need the cover that the visa requires. Clarify the transition period with your university so that you are insured when you arrive.

What to do now

  1. Ask the German mission for the current information sheet on visa, health insurance and blocked account.
  2. Clarify with your university whether statutory student insurance is compulsory for you or an exemption is possible.
  3. Compare offers by their benefit description and cover abroad before you sign.
  4. Keep all documents, and have them translated if the office requires a translation.

From admission to enrolment

  1. Wait for your admission from the university before you apply for the visa.
  2. Book an appointment with the responsible German mission. How appointments are allocated varies by location.
  3. Submit the documents the information sheet requires, such as admission, proof of finances and proof of insurance.
  4. After arrival, enrol at the university. There the proof of insurance is checked.
  5. Register with your health insurance fund and keep the certificate for the university.

Plan enough time. Visa procedures can take weeks, and missing documents delay the start of the semester. Health insurance is only one building block, but it is one that the mission and the university check explicitly.

If you are unsure which cover fits your visa and your studies, a personal assessment is worth it before you sign anything. For international students, documents and deadlines are often tighter than expected.

Common mistakes when preparing

  • Buying foreign insurance without first checking the requirements of the information sheet.
  • Opening a blocked account with an amount taken from outdated information.
  • Losing track of the enrolment deadline at the university.
  • Carrying only digital copies when the office asks for originals.

If family members travel with you, separate rules apply to them. Clarify this directly with the mission, because the requirements for relatives differ from those for students.

A checklist helps. Note which office asks for which document, which deadline applies and until when you must show proof of cover. This avoids duplicate work and delays.
