An exemption from compulsory pension insurance (Befreiung von der Rentenversicherungspflicht) means that, even though you are employed or self-employed, you do not have to be insured in the statutory pension insurance. The requirements are set out in § 6 SGB VI. The exemption applies only in the cases named there. For most working students, it does not apply.
Short answer: An exemption from compulsory pension insurance is available only in the cases of § 6 SGB VI. These include mini-jobs on application, membership of a professional pension fund (Versorgungswerk) and certain self-employed people during their first three years. If the application is submitted within three months, the exemption takes effect from the point at which the requirements were met (§ 6 para. 4 SGB VI). Last updated: October 2026.

Why working students usually pay contributions
The working student privilege (Werkstudentenprivileg) exempts you from health, long-term care and unemployment insurance, but not from pension insurance. There you remain compulsorily insured. The contribution rate for 2026 is 18.6 percent, and working students pay half of it, which is arithmetically 9.3 percent. Assumption: Your gross wage is 1,000 euros a month. Then your share is 93 euros, and your employer pays the same amount. You can read more in our guide to pension insurance during studies.
Frequently asked questions
Am I exempt from pension insurance as a working student?
No, not by the working student privilege alone. The obligation remains in place unless an exemption ground under § 6 SGB VI applies. The working student privilege only exempts you from health, long-term care and unemployment insurance. Pension insurance remains compulsory.
Does an exemption also apply to a second job?
No. The exemption applies only to the specific employment or activity (§ 6 para. 5 sentence 1 SGB VI). If you have several mini-jobs, the application can only be made uniformly and is binding (§ 6 para. 1b sentence 4 SGB VI).
Can I reverse a mini-job exemption?
Yes, but only once and on application. The cancellation takes effect from the month after the application (§ 6 para. 6 SGB VI). Consider beforehand that the exempt employment then produces no pension entitlements, or lower ones.
Is an exemption always worthwhile?
Not automatically. It saves contributions, but it reduces the pension entitlements from that employment. Whether it makes sense for you depends on your life plans and your other employment. The statutory pension insurance provider can tell you about your pension entitlements.
What to do now
- Check whether your activity is subject to pension insurance at all: working student, mini-job, self-employment or professional pension fund.
- For a mini-job, apply for the exemption with your employer and notify them in good time.
- For a professional pension fund, apply through the fund and observe the three-month deadline.
- Clarify the consequences for your pension with the pension insurance provider before you decide.
