A starting salary as an engineer in Germany depends more on your field, your industry and collective bargaining than on whether you hold a bachelor’s or a master’s degree. An overview by field shows where the figures lie and where they only offer guidance.
Short answer: Entry-level engineers earn on average about 4,580 euros gross per month according to the Lohnspiegel database of the Hans Böckler Foundation, for a 38-hour week. Depending on the field, the range runs from 4,560 euros (software) to 4,860 euros (research and development). The figures are self-reported and exclude bonuses (as of October 2026).
The most important points at a glance
- Research and development leads in the Lohnspiegel data, software sits at the lower end of engineering starting salaries.
- The analysis does not separate bachelor, master or diploma graduates.
- In collectively agreed industrial companies, pay groups apply that depend on activity and qualification.
- An IG Metall example for engineers in their fourth year lists 5,717 euros basic pay from April 2026.
- Annual bonuses raise total pay considerably, so always check the gross annual figure, not only the monthly one.
Starting salary by field
According to its own description, the Lohnspiegel database of the Hans Böckler Foundation analyses pay information from more than 60,000 engineers. These are self-reported figures, not collective agreement rates. The monthly amounts refer to a 38-hour week and exclude bonuses.
| Field | Gross monthly pay, entry level |
|---|---|
| Research and development | 4,860 euros |
| Business engineering | 4,780 euros |
| Electrical engineering | 4,730 euros |
| Mechanical engineering | 4,640 euros |
| Project engineering | 4,590 euros |
| Software | 4,560 euros |
| All engineering occupations | 4,580 euros |
The gap between research and development (4,860 euros) and software (4,560 euros) is 300 euros per month. Over twelve months that is about 3,600 euros gross per year (calculated, excluding bonuses). The differences are noticeable but not large enough for the field alone to decide your pay.
What does collective bargaining show in industry?
In the German metal and electrical industry, engineers are placed in pay groups. The IG Metall Lower Saxony office gives an example for pay group 12 B, an engineer in the fourth year in the company, with a 35-hour week. Basic pay from April 2026 is 5,717 euros, and with a 10 percent performance supplement about 6,289 euros. The source gives annual pay including bonuses as 87,070.01 euros for 2026.
This example concerns not the entry level but pay in the fourth year of work. It shows how strongly pay steps and allowances change earnings after the first years. As standard training, the source names a university degree of at least four years, such as a master’s or diploma. A bachelor’s degree is not explicitly mentioned there.
The public sector as an alternative
In the public sector, the TV-L collective agreement sets pay. Pay grade depends on the activity assigned. As an example, the TV-L table for pay grade 13 lists 4,759.37 euros gross per month in step 1 from 1 April 2026. Which grade an engineer receives only becomes clear from the specific post.
What remains as net pay?
Assumption: entry-level engineer with 4,580 euros gross per month, tax class 1, no children aged 23 or over, no church tax and an additional health insurance contribution of 2.9 percent. The estimate gives about 2,920 euros net per month. With 9 percent church tax on income tax it is about 2,860 euros. The method is explained in our guide Net salary 2026 for graduates in tax class 1.
Which factors beyond the field matter?
The field is only one building block. Several factors work together in an offer, and some of them you can influence in a conversation. For engineers, concrete project experience and proof of practice often count more than general application phrases.
- Industry: automotive, mechanical engineering, chemicals, energy and IT services work with different budgets.
- Company size: large groups usually work with fixed pay bands, while smaller firms negotiate more flexibly.
- Location: regional differences and living costs change the real value of a salary noticeably.
- Practice: working student roles, a thesis in a company or time abroad count with many employers.
Bachelor, master or diploma: what counts in the conversation?
In a conversation the title often matters less than how the job is classified. Your degree, internships, working student roles and project work give the employer clues for your grade. Clarify the framework with these questions before you discuss numbers:
- Into which pay group is the post classified, and under which collective agreement?
- How long is the probation period, and when does the next pay step apply?
- Are periods of practical work from internships or working student roles counted in the classification?
Common pitfalls in the salary question
- Looking only at the monthly salary and ignoring bonuses, allowances and working hours.
- Treating a figure from a forum as a fixed market value without checking field and region.
- Agreeing to a salary before the job description and pay group are known.
- Accepting a verbal agreement instead of recording the classification in writing.
Frequently asked questions
Do master’s graduates in engineering earn more than bachelor graduates?
The Lohnspiegel does not separate entry-level pay by degree. We explain the pay gap between bachelor and master across all occupations in our guide Starting salary with a master or bachelor degree 2026. For engineers, the activity and the collective agreement often matter more than the title.
Which field pays best?
In the Lohnspiegel, research and development ranks highest, and software is at the lower end of entry-level engineering pay. Industry, location and collective bargaining also matter. A field with a lower average can still produce the better offer in a specific case.
How important are annual bonuses?
Many collective agreements in industry provide for annual bonuses. The Lohnspiegel figures do not include them. Compare offers therefore on the basis of annual gross pay including bonuses and allowances.
How does pay develop after the start?
The IG Metall tariff example shows the development for pay group 12 B: basic pay rose from 5,545 euros in April 2025 to 5,717 euros in April 2026, about 3.1 percent (calculated). Performance supplements and annual bonuses come on top and differ between contracts.
Is a large company or a mid-sized firm better?
This cannot be answered in general. Large companies are more often bound by collective agreements and more structured, while mid-sized firms often negotiate more flexibly and give responsibility sooner. What matters is the way of working and development you want in your first years.
What to do now
- Match your field to the Lohnspiegel figure and keep it as a guide.
- Check whether the company is bound by a collective agreement and which pay group applies to you.
- Calculate annual gross pay with bonuses and allowances and compare it with net pay.
- Negotiate on the basis of the collective agreement or a documented market range, not on a feeling.
