Insuring an E-Bike Through Contents Insurance: Is It Possible?

An e-bike can be covered by contents insurance if the tariff counts it as a bicycle. Model conditions set a limit of 25 km/h. Here is what to check.

Many students do not insure their e-bike separately, but hope that the contents insurance (Hausratversicherung) of their parents or their own flat covers the bike as well. Whether that works depends on the tariff, the sum insured and the place where the theft or damage happens. This guide explains when an e-bike can be covered by contents insurance and where the limits lie.

In short: An e-bike can be covered by contents insurance if the tariff includes bicycles. According to the model conditions of the German Insurance Association (GDV, status November 2023), e-bikes with pedal assistance up to a maximum of 25 km/h count as bicycles. The outside cover and the compensation limits decide how much is paid in the event of a claim. Last updated: November 2026.

The most important points at a glance

  • Contents insurance covers movable items, and a bicycle can basically belong to them.
  • Under the model conditions, e-bikes with pedal assistance up to 25 km/h count as bicycles.
  • Protection outside the flat, for example when the bike is parked on campus, depends on the outside cover.
  • Separately agreed sums insured can exclude the outside cover.
  • Compare the conditions before you rely on the cover and check the compensation limits.

Which items does contents insurance protect?

Contents insurance is a property insurance for household goods, meaning movable items used personally and kept in the flat or household. A bicycle falls into this category because it is a movable object. Whether it is actually covered is stated in the conditions of the specific tariff.

The details matter here. Many tariffs distinguish between bicycles and e-bikes and between damage inside the flat and damage outside it. Anyone who relies only on the word bicycle may overlook whether the battery or the motor support is counted.

How are e-bikes treated in the model conditions?

The model conditions of the German Insurance Association for contents insurance in the version VHB 2022 contain a rule on bicycle theft. It states that e-bikes with pedal assistance up to a maximum of 25 km/h also count as bicycles. This limit is decisive for the classification. Faster models fall outside this definition and need their own cover.

The reference comes from a document of the GDV dated November 2023. Individual insurers may deviate from it. The model conditions show the usual direction, but the contract decides in the individual case.

Where does the cover end? The outside cover

The outside cover (Außenversicherung) governs whether items are insured outside the flat. For an e-bike this is decisive, because it is often parked on campus, at the station or in front of a supermarket. For bicycle theft, the GDV document refers to the rules on outside cover under part A 12 of VHB 2022, which apply accordingly.

At the same time, the same document names an exception: for items with a separately agreed sum insured, there is no outside cover under part A 12. If you choose a higher sum for the bike, check whether you lose the outside cover as a result. Conversely, a raised compensation limit for the outside cover may exist, and the tariff states its amount.

The table summarises the four questions you should settle before taking out the cover. Ask for the answers in writing if the sales adviser gives them verbally.

Which conditions apply in case of theft?

Many contents tariffs require that a bicycle was properly secured if it was stolen outside the flat. What counts as proper securing is stated in the tariff and may be regulated differently by each provider. A simple lock is not always enough. Check the requirements before you leave the bike in public.

Finally, the place matters too. A bike in the hallway or in a locked bicycle cellar often has a different level of protection than one standing outside. This distinction is important, because most claims fail exactly here.

The compensation also follows the conditions of the tariff rather than a fixed standard. Read the upper limits carefully.

What to do if your bike is expensive

A high-quality e-bike can quickly exceed the usual sum insured. In that case it makes sense to choose the sum deliberately and recalculate the price. The purchase receipt, the invoice and photos secure the proof if you need to document the value in a claim.

Assumption: Your e-bike cost 2,400 euros. If that amount is set too low in the contents insurance, a gap remains. If the compensation is 1,800 euros, you bear the difference of 600 euros yourself. The amounts are freely chosen and only show how underinsurance can work.

Before you switch tariffs or take out a new one, note the questions from the table and compare two or three offers line by line. Pay particular attention to the excess, the maximum amounts and the exclusions, because they determine the payout more than the annual premium. That way a cheap tariff does not turn out expensive in a claim.

Frequently asked questions

Does an e-bike with a motor count as a bicycle for contents insurance?

The GDV model conditions expressly name e-bikes with pedal assistance up to a maximum of 25 km/h as bicycles. Faster models do not fall under that. Check the speed limit of your bike and then read the tariff.

Do I still need a separate bicycle insurance?

That depends on how you use the bike and where it stands. If you park it daily in unsafe places, a separate bicycle policy may serve you better. Our German article on bicycle insurance for students shows the difference (in German).

Is the battery covered?

The model conditions contain no specific statement on the battery. Whether the battery counts as part of the bicycle has to be clarified by the tariff. Ask about it explicitly when you take out the cover if the battery makes up a large part of the value for you.

What if I park the e-bike at my parents’ home?

For items in a shared household, the decisive points are the insurance and the policyholder. If you use the bike in your own flat, check whether this location is covered by your parents’ contract. A clear agreement prevents gaps.

How to proceed now

  1. Determine the speed of your e-bike and its purchase price with receipt.
  2. Read the conditions of your contents contract on bicycles, outside cover and compensation limits.
  3. Compare the sum insured with the current value of the bike.
  4. Decide whether a contents solution is enough or whether a bicycle insurance is needed.
