What an e-bike insurance policy costs cannot be answered credibly with a flat figure, because the premium depends on factors such as place of residence, purchase price and age of the bike. This guide shows which factors drive the price, how to compare tariffs and where extra costs lurk. This guide names no provider prices, since they change constantly.
In short: According to the Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg, the premium of an e-bike policy depends on the postcode of your home, the purchase price and the age of the bike (as of 2022). The insurance plate for a speed pedelec runs from March to February and must be renewed every year (Verbraucherzentrale, as of 18 March 2026). Last updated: November 2026.
Key points at a glance
- According to the Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg, three factors determine the premium: postcode, purchase price and age of the bike.
- Household contents with a bicycle clause, a dedicated bicycle policy and liability are three different building blocks with different costs.
- Simple theft outdoors is usually not in the basic contents tariff, and adding it costs a surcharge.
- For a speed pedelec the insurance plate for motor liability, renewed every year, comes on top.
- Compare not only price but cover, deductible, conditions and termination rules.
What does the premium of an e-bike policy depend on?
The Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg names three features that set the premium: the postcode of your home, the purchase price and the age of the bike (source: Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg, in German, as of 27 April 2022). The postcode reflects regional theft risk, the purchase price determines the possible compensation, and age affects value and availability. For older bikes it can be hard, depending on the tariff, to find a policy at all.
In addition there are the cover components a tariff includes. A tariff with theft, accident and fall damage and the battery usually costs more than pure theft cover. Exact amounts depend on the provider and change, so you should always get a current quote with your own data.
Which building blocks involve what effort and cost?
There are three ways to secure an e-bike. They differ in cover and in pricing logic.
| Building block | What it covers (according to the Verbraucherzentrale) | Cost logic |
|---|---|---|
| Household contents insurance | Burglary theft, for example from a locked cellar or garage. Simple theft outdoors only for a surcharge. Sum usually limited, battery often only with extra cover | Existing contract, surcharge for bicycle clause |
| Dedicated bicycle policy | Depending on provider theft, repair and accident damage, comparable to comprehensive cover | Premium by postcode, purchase price and age |
| Private liability | Damage you cause to others with the pedelec | Existing contract, adjust sums and terms |
| Speed pedelec: motor liability | Compulsory insurance, proven by the insurance plate | Renew every year, valid March to February |
| Speed pedelec: partial comprehensive | Theft, fire, explosion, natural forces, glass breakage and more | With or without deductible |
What contents insurance covers in detail is shown in securing an e-bike through household contents insurance (in German). Whether the effort is worth it for you is clarified in e-bike insurance: is it worth it for commuters?.
How do you make quotes comparable?
Do not compare quotes by the annual premium alone. Set it against the new value, the deductible and the scope of cover.
Assumption: Two quotes for the same bike with a new value of 2,800 euros. Quote A costs 140 euros a year with a 150-euro deductible. Quote B costs 110 euros a year with a 300-euro deductible and excludes battery damage. The annual premium of A is 5 percent of the new value, that of B about 3.9 percent. Quote B is cheaper in premium but leaves more to pay yourself in a claim and does not cover the battery. Whether that suits you depends on whether the battery is a relevant risk for your bike.
| Comparison point | Quote A (assumption) | Quote B (assumption) |
|---|---|---|
| Annual premium | 140 euros | 110 euros |
| Premium as a percentage of the 2,800 euro new value | 5.0 percent | about 3.9 percent |
| Deductible | 150 euros | 300 euros |
| Battery damage | Included | Excluded |
What changes in the costs for a speed pedelec?
For a speed pedelec with assistance up to 45 km/h, insurance is not a matter of weighing up but compulsory. The Verbraucherzentrale describes the vehicle as a light motorcycle. Motor liability is proven by an insurance plate that is valid for the insurance year from March to February and renewed every year. The costs therefore recur regularly, even if the bike stands unused for a long time.
The Verbraucherzentrale also points out that insurers offer much higher sums insured than the legal minimum for slightly higher premiums. When comparing quotes it is therefore worth looking at the sum insured, not only at the price. For theft, fire and similar damage to the bike itself it recommends considering partial comprehensive cover. Further requirements according to the Verbraucherzentrale include the AM licence class, which is included in class B, a minimum age of 16 and a suitable helmet.
Which extra costs and risks should you plan for?
- A surcharge for adding simple theft to the basic contents tariff.
- The deductible in a claim.
- Termination risk: after an insured event either party may terminate (section 92(1) VVG, deadlines in section 92(2) VVG). The Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg describes (as of 2022) an individual case in which the policy was terminated after repair costs of just under 2,000 euros.
- Age limits: for older bikes it is hard to find a comparable tariff.
- Dealer packages at purchase: the Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg advises examining them calmly first.
Which conditions apply in theft cases is explained in e-bike theft: conditions set by your insurer. For the battery see e-bike battery fire: is the damage insured? (in German).
Where can you find comparisons?
For provider comparisons the Verbraucherzentrale points to Stiftung Warentest, to independent insurance advisers and to local advice. In any case check the original insurance terms and not only the summary of a comparison portal. Terms and exclusions decide the payout in a claim.
Frequently asked questions
What does e-bike insurance cost per year?
A general figure cannot be given credibly. According to the Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg, the premium depends on postcode, purchase price and age of the bike. Get a quote with your own data.
Is contents insurance cheaper than a bicycle policy?
Contents insurance often already exists and only costs a surcharge, but usually covers less, for example only burglary theft and limited sums. A bicycle policy is comparable to comprehensive cover and broader.
What does the insurance plate for a speed pedelec cost?
The plate is renewed every year and valid for the insurance year from March to February. The current price is given by the insurer. The Verbraucherzentrale notes that the colour changes every year.
Can the insurer terminate after a claim?
Yes, after an insured event either party may terminate (section 92(1) VVG). That is a risk with expensive repairs.
Is a dealer package at purchase cheaper?
That cannot be said in general. The Verbraucherzentrale Hamburg advises examining dealer packages calmly first. Compare cover, deductible, term and termination rules with a standalone tariff and decide afterwards, not during the sales conversation in the shop.
What to do now
- Note the purchase price, age and home postcode for your bike.
- Check whether your contents insurance has a bicycle clause and ask about the surcharge.
- Get at least two quotes for a dedicated bicycle policy.
- Compare cover, deductible, conditions and termination rules, not just the premium.
