A doctoral scholarship is not a position, so health insurance is not automatically included with it. Whether you are insured, what it costs and whether you receive a contribution depends on your enrolment, your age, your family situation and the funding conditions.

Short answer: No, not automatically. A scholarship does not create compulsory insurance as an employee, because it is not pay for work. You need your own cover, for example student health insurance (2026: 87.38 euros plus the additional contribution) or voluntary statutory insurance (minimum contribution in 2026 about 222.80 euros). Some funding bodies pay a contribution. As of October 2026.

The most important points

  • A scholarship is funding, not pay for work. It does not create compulsory insurance as an employee.
  • Enrolled doctoral candidates can be student-insured under section 5 para. 1 no. 9 SGB V, but only up to the age limit.
  • Student insurance contributions do not depend on the scholarship. They are based on an assessment basis of 855 euros per month (section 236 SGB V).
  • For voluntary statutory insurance, your scholarship may count as contribution-relevant income (section 240 SGB V).
  • Whether a contribution towards health insurance is provided is set out in the guidelines of your funding body.

Why a scholarship is not a position

Compulsory insurance as an employee requires employment for pay (section 5 para. 1 no. 1 SGB V). A scholarship, by contrast, is paid to support the doctorate and your living costs. As a rule, it is not payment under an employment contract for work performed. It therefore does not create compulsory insurance as an employee, and no contributions are deducted from it.

This does not mean you are uninsured. It means you need a different form of cover. The overview of funding during studies and doctorates starts with the guide to scholarships for students in Germany.

The four routes to cover compared

For doctoral candidates with a scholarship, the following routes are usually relevant. Which one applies depends on your enrolment and situation.

RouteRequirementContribution 2026 (as of)
Student health insurance (KVdS)Enrolment at a university, age limit of 3087.38 euros plus additional contribution, average about 24.80 euros (calculated, as of 1 January and 3 September 2026)
Voluntary statutory insuranceNo other compulsory or family cover possible; decided by the insurerMinimum contribution for health insurance 222.80 euros, long-term care 47.46 euros without childless surcharge (calculated, 2026)
Family insuranceTotal income up to 565 euros per month, age limit 25 while in trainingNo separate contribution if the conditions are met
Private health insuranceHealth check and choice of tariffIndividual, no flat rate

The figures come from the GKV-Spitzenverband fact sheet (as of 1 January 2026) and from calculations based on the official average additional contribution. The insurer-specific rate can differ.

Worked example: student insurance with a scholarship

Assumption: you are enrolled, under 30 and not family-insured. You are childless and over 23, so the childless surcharge in long-term care insurance applies. The additional contribution is set at the average of 2.9 percent. The scholarship itself is not part of this calculation, because the assessment runs through the BAföG needs basis.

Item per monthAmount (assumption, 2026)
Health insurance without additional contribution87.38 euros
Additional contribution at 2.9 percent of 855 eurosabout 24.80 euros
Long-term care insurance with childless surcharge (4.2 percent of 855 euros)35.91 euros
Totalabout 148.09 euros

The sum is an estimate for an average case. It is not an offer from any insurer and does not include extra benefits or dental costs.

Why the scholarship counts for voluntary insurance

Student insurance is calculated from the BAföG needs basis, not from your scholarship (section 236 SGB V). Voluntary insurance works differently. Contributable income determines the amount (section 240 SGB V). Income for living costs may belong to it. Your health insurer decides on the details for your case before you commit.

Family insurance also looks at total income. The limit in 2026 is 565 euros per month (section 10 SGB V). Whether a scholarship is counted there is decided by the insurer case by case.

How funding bodies regulate health insurance

Funding bodies set the scholarship rate, supplements and possible contributions in their guidelines. These rules differ considerably. As examples, see the pages on the doctoral scholarship of the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes and the Stiftung der Deutschen Wirtschaft PhD Scholarship: Amount.

Check your notice of award and the guidelines to see whether a contribution towards health insurance, a flat rate or a supplement is provided. Without such a statement, do not assume that costs are covered.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to tell my health insurer about the scholarship?

You must notify your health insurer of changes that matter for the contribution calculation. Your insurer tells you which details those are. Ask before you leave something out.

Does the scholarship pay for my health insurance automatically?

No. The amount of the scholarship says nothing about health insurance on its own. Whether a contribution is paid depends on the funding conditions.

Can I switch to private insurance with a scholarship?

Private insurance is possible if you meet the tariff requirements. Whether private or statutory insurance suits you better depends on benefits, contributions and your plans. The guide on health insurance for PhD students gives an overview.

What changes if I also take a position?

Then pay from employment comes in and the insurance has to be reassessed. A position can trigger compulsory insurance as an employee, which takes precedence over student insurance. The position versus scholarship comparison covers this in detail.

What to do now

  1. Check whether you are enrolled and get an enrolment certificate.
  2. Read your notice of award and the guidelines of your funding body, especially the parts on health insurance.
  3. Ask your health insurer how your status is classified and ask for the answer in writing before you decide.
  4. Set the monthly contribution and any possible grant side by side to compare the real costs.
