You are studying pharmacy and wondering whether you need disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU) and how it would rate your profession. The answer depends heavily on what your working life will look like: in a pharmacy, a hospital, the pharmaceutical industry or a laboratory.

In short: Pharmacy students are rated in BU insurance according to the occupational group in their contract, and the later activity can play a role. In a claim, § 172 VVG looks at your most recently exercised occupation. There is no blanket rating for all pharmacists. Last updated: October 2026.

The most important points

  • The occupational group in your contract decides how your studies and your later work are assessed.
  • Pharmaceutical roles differ widely: community pharmacy, hospital, industry, research and public authorities each have their own demands.
  • Under § 172 VVG, a person is disabled if they are likely to be permanently unable to practise their most recently exercised occupation.
  • Many tariffs distinguish between physically demanding work and mainly seated or laboratory work.
  • An early start can make the health check easier, but it commits you to a premium that you must plan for over the years.

Why the occupational group matters so much for pharmacy students

Insurers assign every occupation to an occupational group. This classification determines which risks are considered typical and how much premium is charged. For pharmacy students the later activity is still open, which is why many contracts work with the group stated in the application and only examine the actual occupation when a claim is made.

For you, this means you should understand how your tariff defines the occupation of pharmacist. The wording in the contract is decisive, not the label you use in everyday student life. An overview of disability insurance during studies is available in our guide on costs and the start (in German).

Which roles are open to pharmacists?

Pharmacy offers a broad field. You receive your licence to practise (Approbation) after your studies, your practical training and the state examination. The Pharmacists’ Licensing Regulation (AAppO) governs this route. Afterwards the work spreads across different areas, which can look very different for a BU assessment.

AreaTypical workWhat tariffs may look at
Community pharmacyAdvice, dispensing, standing and lifting stockPhysical load and the amount of customer work
Hospital pharmacyPreparation, supply to wards, clinical linksLaboratory work, hygiene requirements and shift work
Pharmaceutical industryDevelopment, quality assurance, approvalMainly office or laboratory work
Authority or researchReview, administration, scienceMainly organisational work

This overview is only a guide. Which rating applies to you is shown only by your contract. It also matters whether you later combine several areas or change between them.

What § 172 VVG means for pharmacists

Under § 172 para. 2 VVG, a person is disabled if they are likely to be permanently unable to practise their most recently exercised occupation, in the form it had without the health impairment, wholly or partly, because of illness, bodily injury or age-unusual loss of strength. This standard applies whether you are still studying or already working.

Under § 172 para. 3 VVG, the insurer may contractually require that you also cannot carry on any other activity that corresponds to your training, abilities and previous standing. This clause matters especially for pharmacists, because the training opens many paths. Whether it applies and how far it reaches is set out in your contract.

The statutory system also plays a role. Anyone who knows the reduced earning capacity pension helps to understand where BU insurance fits in. The rules are set out in § 43 SGB VI (in German) and differ considerably from the terms of a private disability policy.

Taking out cover during your studies: benefits and limits

An early policy has advantages and disadvantages. The overview below helps you weigh both sides.

AspectArgues forArgues against
Health checkAt a young age the check is often easier to pass.Pre-existing conditions must be disclosed in full.
RatingA contract with a suitable occupational group can give you security later. The rating can change later and cannot be adjusted in every tariff.
PremiumAn early start can keep the premium plannable. The premium is binding, even when your budget is tight during your studies.
FlexibilityStarting early leaves your later career choice open.A policy tailored to one occupation does not always fit a change of path.

There is no single answer. Whether a policy during your studies suits your situation depends on your budget, your plans and the concrete terms. For the financial side, our guide on BU in pharmacy studies may also help.

What to watch for in health questions

The application will ask about pre-existing conditions, treatments and medication. These answers must be complete and truthful. Concealing information can lead the insurer to withdraw from the contract or refuse benefits. Allergies, skin conditions and mental health treatment in particular are worth working through calmly before you complete the form.

If you already have a pre-existing condition, an anonymous risk enquiry can help you assess your chances in advance. Our guide on BU with a pre-existing condition as a student explains how this works.

Frequently asked questions

Is pharmacy a more favourably rated occupational group?

That cannot be said in general. The rating depends on the tariff and on the specific activity. Compare the terms rather than relying on the course of study alone. A comparison of occupational groups and clauses is more meaningful than looking at a single figure.

Do I have to report a change of course or career plan?

Your contract determines whether and when a change must be reported. Many tariffs require details of material changes to your activity or occupation. A change within your studies is therefore not automatically unproblematic. A written enquiry to the insurer creates clarity.

Does BU pay out if I work in a laboratory after graduation?

Whether laboratory work affects the duty to pay benefits depends on how your contract assesses it. What matters is whether you can no longer practise your most recently exercised occupation. A change to another field of activity is not, on its own, a claim.

Can I adjust the contract to my situation later?

That depends on the tariff. Some contracts include adjustment options, others do not. A post-insurance guarantee can allow an increase on certain events without a new health check. The rules are set out in the terms.

What to do now

  1. Note your plans for your career and check which fields of work interest you.
  2. Compare the occupational groups and referral clauses of different tariffs using the terms.
  3. Answer the health questions carefully and gather all relevant documents beforehand.
  4. If questions remain about the rating or tariff, get personal advice.
