Definition. Deregistration (Exmatrikulation) is your formal removal from the university, which ends your student status. For student health insurance (KVdS), this means that the obligation ends at the end of the semester in which you are deregistered. After that, your new status determines how you are insured.
What happens to your insurance
Your membership in student health insurance does not end on the day you deregister, but at the end of the current semester. After that you need another basis for cover, otherwise there is a gap in your protection. Possible routes are employment with compulsory insurance, follow-on insurance in statutory health insurance (Anschlussversicherung) or a switch to private health insurance.

An example in the winter semester
You deregister from the university in February 2027, in the middle of the winter semester 2026/27. Your obligation in student insurance ends with the end of that semester. From the following semester onwards you need new cover, so arrange it in good time.

Frequently asked questions
Does my insurance end on the day I deregister?
No. Under § 190 para. 9 SGB V, membership ends at the end of the semester. Have the exact date confirmed by your health insurance fund.
Do I have to notify my health insurance fund after deregistering?
The university reports the deregistration, but check with your fund whether you need to report anything else. It is important that you name your new insurance in good time so that your contributions are correct.
What happens if I drop out of my studies?
The same rules apply as for deregistration. Insurance ends with the semester, and you then check your options for follow-on cover.
