What applies at 25 and 30 with Debeka BKK?
Family insurance ends at 25
Until your 25th birthday you can be covered as a family member through a parent who is insured with a statutory fund, as long as your total income in 2026 does not exceed 565 € per month, or 603 € for a mini job (section 10 SGB V). The age limit can be extended only for periods of statutory or voluntary civilian service, not for periods of study. After that, your coverage continues as a student with the amounts calculated above. From age 23, the childless care surcharge also applies, which adds 5.13 € per month.
Student insurance ends at 30
Compulsory student insurance ends at the end of the semester in which you turn 30 (section 5 para. 1 no. 9 SGB V). The fund offers the student tariff only to students who have not yet reached age 30. Since 2020 there is no maximum number of semesters. The age limit is the deciding factor. An extension is possible if the type of training or personal reasons justify going beyond it. The fund decides this case by case. Details are in our guides Health insurance as a student over 30 and Studying at 30 and older.
When student insurance ends, you usually remain a voluntary member of the fund unless you can show other cover. A minimum assessment base then applies. The 2026 minimum contribution is calculated as follows:
- Minimum assessment base: 3,955.00 € reference figure divided by 3 gives 1,318.33 € per month.
- Health insurance: reduced rate of 14.0 % plus additional contribution of 3.25 % gives 17.25 %, which is 227.41 €.
- Long-term care insurance: 47.46 € (3.6 %) with a child, 55.37 € (4.2 %) without children.
- Total: 274.87 € with a child, 282.78 € without children.
With higher income, the contribution is calculated on actual income up to the contribution assessment ceiling of 5,812.50 € per month.
Working students and mini jobs with Debeka BKK
A part-time job usually does not change your insurance as long as your studies come first. Weekly hours and earnings are the deciding factors.
| Situation | Effect on health insurance |
|---|---|
| Working student, up to 20 hours per week | No health and long-term care contributions are due from the job, and student insurance continues. Pension insurance remains compulsory. |
| Employment regularly above 20 hours per week | The working student exemption ends and compulsory employee insurance may apply. It takes precedence over student insurance. |
| Mini job up to 603 € per month | Student insurance continues. For family insurance, the mini job limit of 603 € applies instead of 565 €. |
These rules follow the joint circular of the statutory health insurance federations from 2016. In borderline cases such as night work, semester breaks or several jobs, the fund decides on the individual case. Our guide Working student: the 20-hour rule explains the details.
Bonus programme and benefits for young members
The fund lists a bonus programme in its benefits directory. The page does not state any amounts, so we do not report details here. The information is on the fund’s page Debeka BKK, bonus programme (accessed 25 Oct 2026, no update date shown).
How do you switch to Debeka BKK?
You apply to the fund, and it handles the cancellation with your current fund. The deadlines are set in section 175 SGB V:
- Right to choose: you can choose your fund freely from age 15. As a student, you must choose the fund no later than two weeks after compulsory insurance begins.
- Online application: submit the application to the fund. Notifying the new fund replaces the cancellation, and your previous fund confirms within two weeks at the latest.
- Notice period: membership ends at the end of the second calendar month after notice. If you give notice in January, you switch on 1 April.
- Binding period: you are generally bound to the new fund for twelve months. This does not apply if membership ends by law, for example when family insurance ends.
- Special right of termination: if the fund raises its additional contribution, you can give notice up to the end of the month from which the higher rate applies. The twelve-month binding period does not apply then. The termination only takes effect once you prove that you have other cover.
