Child Benefit Transition Period: Up to Four Months

The child benefit transition period lasts up to four months between training stages, such as school and university. An example shows how it works.

Definition of the child benefit transition period

The child benefit transition period (Übergangszeit) is the time between two training stages, for example between leaving school and starting university, or between a bachelor’s and a master’s degree. Within it, child benefit generally continues if your training carries on without a break. The maximum length is fixed by law.

Example

You finish your Abitur (school-leaving exam) in July and start university in October. The three months fall within the transition period, so your child benefit entitlement continues. If there is a five-month break between your bachelor’s and master’s, the transition period is no longer enough.
