An AI lecture transcript is created when a tool turns the recording of a lecture into text and structures it into an outline. For students this is most useful in long courses where you have to listen and take notes at the same time. This guide shows which services have offers for students, which of them apply in Germany, which option stays free, and which rules apply at German universities.
Short answer: According to the provider, Otter.ai gives students 20 percent off Pro, but requires a .edu address. Granola offers 12 months of Business for free only to universities in the US, the UK and Canada, not to German universities. Whisper, an open-source model under the MIT license that runs on your own computer, stays free to use. Last updated: October 2026, offers change often.
The most important points
- Transcription tools turn audio into text. The quality depends on sound quality, accents and technical terms, so you have to check your notes.
- Otter.ai gives students 20 percent off Pro, both monthly and annual. The provider page requires a .edu address and does not mention German university addresses.
- According to the provider, Granola gives students 12 months of Business for free, but only at universities in the US, the UK and Canada. German universities are not intended.
- Whisper is free to use. Installing it requires Python and the command line.
- Before you record a lecture, clarify whether it is permitted with the lecturer and read your university’s rules.
What transcription tools can do in lectures
Transcription tools process a recording or live audio and produce a text, often with timestamps. Some services also summarise the text in bullet points or mark key terms. For reviewing, this can help, for example when you want to find a passage quickly. However, a transcript shows the wording, not what matters for your exam. The summary is a draft that you have to check yourself.
Transcripts contain errors, especially with proper names, formulas, technical terms and poor audio. Always compare important passages with the recording or the slides.
Which offers apply to students?
The table reflects the information on the provider pages, as of October 2026. Otter states its prices in US dollars. You will find the euro amount on the provider’s pricing page.
| Offer | Service | Regular price | Price for students | Verification and validity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Otter.ai Pro (monthly) | Transcription and meeting notes | 16.99 US dollars per month | 13.59 US dollars per month | A .edu email address; discount via the link “Student & Teacher Discount”. German university addresses are not mentioned. Duration see provider page |
| Otter.ai Pro (annual) | As Pro monthly | 8.33 US dollars per month | 6.67 US dollars per month, 79.99 US dollars per year | As Pro monthly |

| Granola Business | Full Business plan, transcription and structuring of lectures and meetings | see pricing page | 12 months free | For students at universities in the US, the UK and Canada, not Germany. The provider names no end date |

How to activate the Otter offer
According to the provider page, the discount runs through your account. The steps are:
- Create an account with your .edu address or log in with it. Without a subscription you start on the Basic plan.
- Click your name at the top left and choose the link “Upgrade plan”.
- Scroll below the description of Pro and click the link “Student & Teacher Discount”.
- Choose Pro monthly or annual and complete the subscription.
For details, the provider page refers to a help article. Check there whether your university address is accepted before you subscribe.
How much does the annual plan save compared with monthly?
Worked example with the student prices on the Otter pricing page, as of October 2026, in US dollars. Assumption: the student price stays the same for twelve months and you use Pro the whole time. Paying monthly you pay 13.59 US dollars times twelve, which is 163.08 US dollars per year. Paying annually you pay 79.99 US dollars once, according to the provider. Under these assumptions the annual plan is considerably cheaper. The provider’s pricing page remains decisive, because prices change.
Which free options are there?
Whisper is the free option that works without a subscription. Processing runs on your computer, but installation requires Python and working with the command line. Otter.ai offers a Basic plan with 300 transcription minutes per month. Ask your IT service whether your university provides a campus license (Campuslizenz) for a transcription service. An overview is in our guide to campus licenses (in German).
What applies at German universities?
Recordings and transcripts touch three areas: the rules of the university, the rights of lecturers and fellow students, and data protection. The university sets the rules, often in the examination regulations or in guidance for students. The lecturer also decides whether a recording is permitted in their course. Permission to record says nothing yet about where the recording is processed afterwards.
Lectures contain the voices and names of lecturers and fellow students. Cloud services process the recording on the provider’s servers. Before you upload, read the privacy policy and do not enter personal data or unpublished research data. For what to watch out for, see our guide to data protection for AI tools in study (in German).
Transcripts and summaries are also drafts. Compare quotes, figures and names with the recording or the slides before you use them in study material. For how to learn with AI without simply copying, see our guide to learning with AI (in German).
Frequently asked questions
Is Granola free for students in Germany?
According to the provider page, no. The page names students at accredited universities in the US, the UK and Canada. Germany is not listed. The provider names no end date. The page describes the offer as a limited edition.
Does the Otter discount apply with a German university address?
The provider page requires a .edu address and does not mention German university addresses. Ask the provider before you rely on the discount. Whether the student price is valid for students in Germany is shown at checkout or by the provider’s support.
Am I allowed to record lectures?
Your university decides this, and as a rule the lecturer. Ask in advance whether a recording is permitted and whether it may be used only for your own purposes. A ban in a course also applies when a tool makes the recording technically possible.
How accurate are the transcripts?
That depends on sound quality, accent, specialist vocabulary and speaker changes. Proper names, formulas and technical terms are often misspelled. Check important passages against the original before you quote them or use them in an exam.
What happens to the recording after transcription?
The provider decides this. Check the settings to see whether you can delete recordings, and read the privacy policy before you upload lectures. With Whisper, processing runs on your own computer if you run the model locally.
What to do now
- Ask your lecturer or check your university’s guidance on whether you may record lectures.
- Ask your IT service whether your university has a campus license for a transcription service.
- Read the privacy policy of the service before you upload recordings.
- Test a tool with a short, uncritical recording and check the result sentence by sentence.
- Activate a student offer only when the requirements on the provider page match your university.
