Your career start as an engineer in Germany usually means employment in industry, planning offices, utilities or the public sector. Your annual salary and whether a collective agreement applies decide most of your health insurance and protection questions.
Short answer: Employed engineers are compulsorily insured in statutory health insurance as long as their regular annual earnings stay below 77,400 euros (2026). Employer and employee each pay half of the contribution. We give no typical starting salary, because it varies widely by collective agreement and employer. Last updated: October 2026.
Key points
- Many starts are set by collective agreements, in the public sector under TVöD or TV-L (public service collective agreements), in metal and electrical industry under pay agreements.
- If your regular annual earnings stay below 77,400 euros (2026), statutory health insurance is compulsory.
- The employee share of health insurance in 2026 is 8.75 percent of gross pay, capped at 5,812.50 euros per month.
- Statutory reduced earning capacity pension (Erwerbsminderungsrente) requires contribution years that may be missing right after university.
- Occupational disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung) refers to your last occupation, not to any job.
- Incomplete health information in the application can cost you cover when you need it.
What do engineers earn at the start?
There is no single entry salary for engineers. In the public sector the pay grade under TVöD (federal and municipal employees) or TV-L (state employees) sets the pay, depending on activity and qualification. In the metal and electrical industry, pay agreements set the minimum pay, and many employers add allowances.
Outside collective agreements, pay is negotiated. We do not give a fixed figure, because it varies with industry, region, qualification and employer. For orientation, use the pay tables of the relevant agreement and the pay atlas of the Federal Employment Agency (Entgeltatlas, in German).
| Pay setting | What applies | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Public sector | Pay grade under TVöD or TV-L | Published collective pay tables |
| Metal and electrical industry | Pay agreement of the sector | Agreement for your region |
| Outside agreements | Employment contract | Pay atlas as orientation |
When does health insurance switch to private cover?
As an employee you are compulsorily insured in statutory health insurance under section 5 SGB V (Sozialgesetzbuch V) as long as your regular annual earnings stay below the earnings threshold (Jahresarbeitsentgeltgrenze). In 2026 it is 77,400 euros a year, or 6,450 euros a month. Above it you may choose private insurance, but you do not have to. The draft figure for 2027 is 84,150 euros, which is not yet in force (status 7 October 2026).
Contributions depend on income up to the contribution ceiling (Beitragsbemessungsgrenze), which in 2026 is 5,812.50 euros a month or 69,750 euros a year. The general contribution rate is 14.6 percent and the average additional contribution 2.9 percent (status 1 January 2026, GKV-Spitzenverband). Employer and employee share both parts.
| Contribution share 2026 (assumption: gross pay 4,500 euros) | Rate | Amount per month |
|---|---|---|
| Health insurance, employee share | 8.75 percent | 393.75 euros |
| Long-term care insurance, employee share without children from age 23 | 2.4 percent | 108.00 euros |
| Pension insurance, employee share | 9.3 percent | 418.50 euros |
The table shows social insurance only. Unemployment insurance and income tax are not included. For your net amount, use the tax calculator of the German Federal Ministry of Finance.
How does pension insurance work at the start?
In 2026 total pension contributions are 18.6 percent, the employee share 9.3 percent, up to the contribution ceiling of 8,450 euros a month (status 1 January 2026, Deutsche Rentenversicherung).
For many starters the reduced earning capacity pension under section 43 SGB VI matters more than the old-age pension. It requires three years of contributions in the last five years and the general waiting period. You count as partly reduced if you cannot work at least six hours a day, and fully reduced if you cannot work at least three hours a day. After studies without contribution years, this requirement may still be missing.
Occupational disability: what the cover must deliver
Under section 172 para. 2 VVG (Versicherungsvertragsgesetz), you are occupationally disabled if you can no longer carry out your last occupation, wholly or partly, for a long-term period, due to illness, bodily injury or age-unusual loss of strength. What counts is your concrete occupation, not any job.
Many insurers also require that you cannot carry out any other activity that matches your training (section 172 para. 3 VVG). For engineers with a broad qualification, this clause can change a great deal. Disability insurance suits you if your working capacity is your main income. It suits you less if assets or pension entitlements already cover that risk. A personal assessment is possible through Academycon, see So arbeiten wir (in German).

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to register with a health insurer myself as a graduate?
As an employee your employer usually registers you with the health insurer you choose. You make the choice, and the additional contribution depends on the insurer and can differ between them. Switching is generally possible, and the deadlines are in the insurer’s statutes.
When is private health insurance an option for engineers?
Private insurance is only an option if your regular annual earnings are above 77,400 euros (2026). Then entry age, health, tariff and contribution development matter a great deal. Below that threshold you remain compulsorily insured in statutory health insurance.
Is the statutory reduced earning capacity pension enough protection?
It is a basic protection and depends on contribution years and your ability to work. The pension can fall well below your previous income, which is why many employees also consider occupational disability insurance. The German pension insurer (Deutsche Rentenversicherung) can give you an individual estimate.
What counts as a health declaration for disability insurance?
You must answer every question in the application truthfully, including pre-existing conditions and treatments of recent years. The duty to disclose under section 19 VVG governs this. Before applying, collect your records and clear up any uncertainties.
Next steps
- Read your employment contract and check whether a collective agreement applies and which pay grade is planned.
- Compare your regular annual earnings, including regular allowances, with the 77,400 euro threshold.
- Clarify your health information before you apply for disability insurance, and compare the rules on referral to other work in the tariff.
- Check your net pay with the contribution rates in this guide and the federal tax calculator.
