Starting as a fully qualified lawyer (Volljurist) in a German law firm means entering a market where pay is usually negotiated individually. Your insurance depends on three points: whether you are admitted as a lawyer, how high your gross annual pay is and which professional liability cover applies. This guide explains the first job in a law firm with a focus on pay, health insurance and liability.

Short answer: For salaried fully qualified lawyers in law firms there is usually no collective pay scale, so we name no figure. For health insurance, the 2026 earnings threshold is 77,400 euros per year (status: October 2026, GKV umbrella association). Admitted lawyers need professional liability insurance of at least 250,000 euros per claim (section 51 BRAO).

The most important points

  • For fully qualified lawyers in law firms there is usually no collective agreement with fixed starting pay. Pay is negotiated individually.
  • If your gross annual pay in 2026 is below 77,400 euros, you remain compulsorily insured in statutory health insurance.
  • As an admitted lawyer you must hold professional liability insurance with a minimum sum insured of 250,000 euros per claim.
  • Whether a salaried lawyer without admission has the same duty depends on section 51 BRAO. The firm often arranges cover in its contract.
  • Admission also determines whether you must join the lawyers pension fund (Versorgungswerk der Rechtsanwälte), which depends on your chamber.

Is there a collective pay scale for lawyers in law firms?

For salaried fully qualified lawyers in law firms there is usually no collective agreement with fixed starting salaries. Pay depends on firm size, location, specialisation and negotiation. Reliable comparison figures come from the official pay statistics of the Federal Employment Agency (Entgeltatlas, in German). We do not quote salary figures that we cannot back with a primary source.

Which health insurance fits the starting pay?

Statutory health insurance remains compulsory as long as annual pay stays below the compulsory insurance threshold. For 2026 it is 77,400 euros per year, or 6,450 euros per month (status 1 January 2026, GKV umbrella association). The employee share is half of the contribution rate and the additional contribution, plus the long-term care contribution.

Assumption: gross annual pay of 60,000 euros, that is 5,000 euros per month, no special payments, childless and over 23 years old, average additional contribution of 2.9 percent. The social security contributions are then about 557.50 euros per month (employee share, without income tax).

The table assumes a full calendar year. If you start during the year, check compulsory insurance for the current year separately.

Do you need professional liability insurance?

Every lawyer must take out professional liability insurance for financial losses arising from professional activity, for as long as they are admitted. The minimum sum insured is 250,000 euros per claim. The insurer may limit its payments for all claims in one insurance year to four times that amount (section 51 BRAO).

If you work as a salaried lawyer without admission, this duty does not apply in the same way. Have the firm confirm its liability arrangements in writing and check whether the policy covers you as an employee. For the protection of your earning capacity, a look at disability insurance for graduates is also worthwhile, for example in Disability Insurance for Students: Costs and Start.

Which pension provision applies once you are admitted?

Once you are admitted as a lawyer, you generally become a member of the lawyers pension fund of your chamber district. Whether and to what extent this applies depends on state law and the statutes. An exemption from statutory pension insurance follows section 6 SGB VI. For the overview in German, see Versorgungswerk für Rechtsanwälte (in German).

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to become a lawyer straight after the state examination?

No. As a salaried lawyer without admission you are not bound by the duties of the Federal Lawyers Act in the same way. Admission starts the duty to hold professional liability insurance for as long as you remain admitted. Clarify the effects on insurance and pension before you change status.

Does the choice of private insurance apply right after I start?

No. The choice between statutory and private insurance arises only once you are exempt from compulsory insurance, that is, when annual pay exceeds the threshold. Below it you are compulsorily insured in statutory health insurance. For the process of switching at career start, see Switching to Private Health Insurance at Career Start.

How do I find reliable pay data?

Through the official pay statistics of the Federal Employment Agency (Entgeltatlas, in German). Talking to graduates of your year can help as well. Always compare full-time work, professional experience and location so that the figures remain comparable.

Must I join the pension fund if I am not yet admitted?

That depends on your chamber district and the date of your admission. Without admission as a lawyer there is generally no duty to join the lawyers pension fund. Check the date with your chamber as soon as you decide to seek admission.

What to do now

  1. Clarify whether you will be admitted or work as a salaried lawyer without admission.
  2. Compare your expected gross annual pay with the 2026 threshold of 77,400 euros.
  3. Have the firm confirm its professional liability cover in writing and compare it with the minimum requirements of section 51 BRAO.
  4. Check your cover for reduced earning capacity and the pension duty as soon as admission is settled.
