Your career start as a management consultant in Germany usually begins as an analyst or consultant at a consulting firm. Fixed pay, bonuses and travel all affect your health insurance, because compulsory insurance depends on your regular annual earnings.

Short answer: Consulting firms have no collective agreement, so pay is negotiated and often supplemented by variable elements. If your regular annual earnings exceed 77,400 euros (2026), you may choose private health insurance. Below that threshold, statutory health insurance is compulsory. Last updated: October 2026.

Key points

  • Consulting pay is set outside collective agreements, so we do not give a reliable starting figure.
  • The threshold to private health insurance was 77,400 euros a year in 2026, or 6,450 euros a month.
  • Whether bonuses count as regular annual earnings depends on how regularly they are paid, so check this with your health insurer.
  • If you start above the threshold, you may stay in statutory insurance but you do not have to.
  • Private health insurance also requires private long-term care insurance. It does not replace statutory long-term care insurance.
  • Protection of your ability to work, through disability insurance or statutory reduced earning capacity pension, should be checked separately from the health insurance question.

How is your starting pay built up?

Consulting firms pay a fixed salary and often a variable element such as a bonus or success fee. Benefits in kind such as a company car, a phone or pension contributions come on top. For health insurance, regular annual earnings count, and one-off payments are assessed differently from regular ones.

We do not give a binding figure for starting salaries. There is no collective agreement for management consulting, and pay varies by firm, location and degree. Ask for all pay components in writing.

The 77,400 euro threshold: what it means for you

If your regular annual earnings stay below the earnings threshold (Jahresarbeitsentgeltgrenze), you are compulsorily insured under section 5 SGB V (Sozialgesetzbuch V). In 2026 the threshold is 77,400 euros a year (status 1 January 2026). The draft figure for 2027 is 84,150 euros, which is not yet in force (status 7 October 2026).

Above the threshold you are free to choose. You can stay in statutory insurance or switch to private cover. Entry age, health and the choice of tariff matter most. With voluntary statutory insurance your employer usually contributes half, and with private insurance you receive a contribution that is capped under section 257 SGB V (Sozialgesetzbuch V).

Do not forget long-term care insurance. Anyone with private health insurance also needs private long-term care insurance.

Worked example: when the threshold actually matters

Assumption: a fixed salary of 5,500 euros gross a month gives 66,000 euros a year. If an annual bonus of 15,000 euros is added and counts as regular earnings, the total is 81,000 euros, above the threshold of 77,400 euros. If it does not count, earnings stay below the threshold and statutory insurance remains compulsory. This difference decides the insurance route, so have the classification confirmed in writing.

Disability and reduced earning capacity at higher income

At higher income the need for protection grows, because a loss of earnings leaves larger gaps. The statutory reduced earning capacity pension under section 43 SGB VI is a basic protection and depends on contribution years. Disability insurance pays under section 172 VVG. How the tariff describes your occupation and whether a referral clause applies decides what it pays.

Disability insurance suits you if you want to protect your standard of living and have no sufficient reserves. It suits you less if assets and pension entitlements already cover the risk. A personal assessment is possible through Academycon, see So arbeiten wir (in German).

Frequently asked questions

Do bonuses count as regular annual earnings?

That depends on whether they are paid regularly and reliably. One-off payments are assessed differently from fixed annual bonuses. Ask your health insurer or employer to confirm the classification in writing.

Can I go back to statutory insurance after a year above the threshold?

A return to statutory insurance is possible under conditions, for example if earnings fall below the threshold again. The health insurer checks the details. Our guide on returning to statutory insurance explains the process in German.

Do I have to undergo a medical examination for private insurance?

A medical examination is not always needed, but you answer health questions in the application. The duty to disclose under section 19 VVG also applies to private health insurance. Incomplete or incorrect answers can lead to reduced benefits.

Is private insurance worth it with a high starting salary?

That cannot be answered in general. Premium, benefits, age, health and future pay development all play a role. A comparison over several years shows whether a tariff fits your plans.

Next steps

  1. Ask for fixed salary, bonus rules and benefits in writing.
  2. Compare your regular annual earnings with the 77,400 euro threshold, and with the 2027 threshold once your pay rises.
  3. Clarify with your health insurer whether bonuses count before you apply for private insurance.
  4. Check your protection of working capacity separately from the health insurance question, and answer all health questions completely.
