How much of a salary remains as net pay in Germany in 2026 depends mainly on your tax class, your health insurance and social insurance contributions. At 4,500 euros gross per month in tax class 1 without children, social insurance is about 979 euros. You work out wage tax with the Federal Ministry of Finance payroll deduction calculator, because it depends on more details than a flat figure can cover.
Short answer: At 4,500 euros gross per month, tax class 1 without children and with the average additional health insurance contribution of 2.9 percent, you pay about 979 euros in social insurance (as of October 2026). About 3,521 euros remain before wage tax. Work out wage tax with the official calculator. This is not a payslip.
The most important points at a glance
- In 2026, employees without children aged 23 or over pay about 21.8 percent of gross pay in social insurance, and about 21.2 percent with a child.
- Income tax follows the schedule in section 32a of the German Income Tax Act (EStG). The basic allowance for 2026 is 12,348 euros. It is not calculated in euros here.
- For health insurance you pay half the general contribution rate plus half of your insurer’s additional contribution.
- Without children, a care insurance surcharge of 0.6 percentage points applies, which you pay alone.
- From a raise, social insurance is deducted first. On 500 euros more gross that is 108.75 euros, plus the higher wage tax.
Which deductions apply in 2026?
Contributions are calculated on gross pay up to the respective contribution ceiling. For 2026 the ceiling for health and care insurance is 5,812.50 euros per month, and for pension and unemployment insurance 8,450 euros per month. Above these amounts contributions do not rise further.
| Insurance branch | Total rate 2026 | Employee share | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Health insurance | 14.6 percent plus additional contribution (average 2.9 percent) | 7.3 percent plus 1.45 percent | GKV-Spitzenverband fact sheet, 1 January 2026; BMG, September 2026 |
| Care insurance | 3.6 percent (childless 4.2 percent) | 1.8 percent (childless from 23: 2.4 percent) | BMG, as of 14 September 2026 |
| Pension insurance | 18.6 percent | 9.3 percent | Federal contribution notice 2026, as listed in the fact sheet |
| Unemployment insurance | 2.6 percent | 1.3 percent | vdek contribution rates, as of 22 December 2025 |
The additional contribution is set by each insurer. The figure of 2.9 percent is the national average that the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) lists for 2026. A fund with a higher rate costs you more accordingly.
How is wage tax determined in tax class 1?
The 2026 income tax schedule starts with a basic allowance of 12,348 euros. No tax is due below this amount. For taxable income x, rounded down to full euros, the following zones apply, taken from section 32a EStG for 2026:
- Up to 17,799 euros: (914.51 × y + 1,400) × y, where y is one ten-thousandth of the amount above 12,348 euros.
- From 17,800 to 69,878 euros: (173.10 × z + 2,397) × z + 1,034.87, where z is one ten-thousandth of the amount above 17,799 euros.
- From 69,879 to 277,825 euros: 0.42 × x, minus 11,135.63 euros.
The gross salary is also reduced by the employee lump sum for work-related expenses of 1,230 euros (section 9a EStG) and by the provision allowance. Because the provision allowance depends on several partial amounts, this guide does not state wage tax in euros. Enter your details into the Federal Ministry of Finance payroll deduction calculator instead.
Worked example: social insurance at three salary levels
Assumption: tax class 1, twelve monthly salaries, no children, age over 23, no bonuses, no allowances and additional contribution of 2.9 percent. The table shows social insurance and gross pay after it, but no wage tax.
| Gross per month | Social insurance per month | Gross after social insurance | Wage tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3,800 euros | 826.50 euros | 2,973.50 euros | work out with the official calculator |
| 4,500 euros | 978.75 euros | 3,521.25 euros | work out with the official calculator |
| 5,200 euros | 1,131.00 euros | 4,069.00 euros | work out with the official calculator |
Social insurance contributions follow fixed rates. Income tax depends on the provision allowance and other details of your payslip. Net pay results only once you subtract the wage tax from the calculator. The table is therefore a guide, not a binding calculation.
What the calculation does not include
- Church tax: depending on the federal state and religion, 8 or 9 percent of income tax is due.
- The actual additional contribution of your health insurer, which can differ from the average.
- Bonuses such as a Christmas bonus, which change the monthly picture.
- Child allowances, child benefit and tax classes for married couples.
- Capital-forming benefits, company cars, job tickets and salary sacrifice.
Why the tax class matters so much
The tax class determines how much income tax is withheld each month. Tax class 1 applies to single people and to those without special characteristics. Married couples can use the combinations 3 and 5 or 4 and 4, and single parents may receive tax class 2. The difference shows mainly in monthly net pay, not in the annual tax, which is settled later in the tax assessment.
Choosing a tax class is therefore a question of timing. The examples in this guide apply explicitly to tax class 1.
Why the provision allowance matters
The provision allowance (Vorsorgepauschale) reduces taxable income, because contributions to pension, health and care insurance count as provision. It is not identical to the contribution you pay, which is why wage tax cannot be stated as a flat figure. The calculator of the Federal Ministry of Finance determines it for your details.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my net pay lower than I expected?
Usually because social insurance contributions were underestimated, church tax applies or the tax class differs. Compare your payslip line by line with the table above. Clarify significant differences with your payroll office.
Does the childless surcharge apply to everyone?
It applies to people without children from the month after their 23rd birthday. Changes to care insurance are planned for 2027 but have not been decided. Check the figures again once the law is final.
How much of a pay rise do you keep?
Assumption: 4,500 euros gross becomes 5,000 euros gross. Social insurance then rises by 108.75 euros per month, leaving 391.25 euros before wage tax. The calculator shows how much of that remains after the additional wage tax for your tax class and details.
What to do now
- Check on your payslip whether the additional contribution and the childless surcharge are correctly included.
- Work out wage tax with the Federal Ministry of Finance payroll deduction calculator using your tax class and details.
- Always calculate with net pay before accepting a salary offer.
- If something is unclear, ask your employer’s payroll office or a tax adviser.
