There is often a gap between graduation and your first job. Your student certificate has expired, applications are running, and the contract only starts in the autumn. Three things change at once during this time: your health insurance, your income and sometimes your parents child benefit. This guide shows how to stay covered during this phase.

Kurz beantwortet: Student health insurance ends with your deregistration from university. If you are under 23 and not in paid work, you can be covered under your parents family insurance, as long as your total income stays at or below 565 euros per month (2026). After that, voluntary insurance usually follows. Child benefit ends with the qualification, but there is a transition period of up to four months.

Key points at a glance

  • The duty to have health insurance does not end with your studies. You must stay continuously insured.
  • Family insurance is possible up to age 23 if you are not in paid work and your income stays below 565 euros per month (2026).
  • From age 23, without a job, voluntary insurance costs at least about 270 euros per month (2026).
  • Unemployment benefit depends on your prior employment. Register as job-seeking early.
  • Child benefit normally runs until the end of training, with a transition period of up to four months.

Health insurance after deregistration

Compulsory student health insurance ends with the end of the semester in which you are deregistered (section 5 para. 1 no. 9 of the Social Code Book V, SGB V). Several routes follow, and the order in which you check them decides cost and cover. The table shows the most common situations.

Situation after your studiesHealth insuranceWhat to watch out for
Going straight into a job with compulsory insuranceCompulsory insurance as an employee through the employerThe insurer contacts you. Check the notification.
No income, under 23 and not in paid workFamily insurance with your parents if total income stays at or below 565 eurosWith a mini-job or side job, check the income limit carefully.
No income, aged 23 or olderVoluntary insuranceJoining is subject to a deadline, usually three months after compulsory cover ends.
Receiving unemployment benefit ICompulsory insurance during the benefitCover depends on the benefit. Clarify the contribution with the Federal Employment Agency.

Important: a gap without health insurance is not an option. The duty to be insured also applies during a transition period. If you are unsure which route fits, your health insurer can advise you, and you should keep the deadlines in view.

Family insurance as a bridge

Children are covered under family insurance up to the age of 23 if they are not in paid work. In school or vocational training, which includes university study, the age limit is 25 (section 10 para. 2 SGB V). The income limit also applies: total income may not exceed 565 euros per month in 2026, one seventh of the reference earnings (section 10 para. 1 no. 5 SGB V).

For the gap this means: once your studies end, training ends, and family insurance usually ends with the age limit or with income. The law does not extend family insurance for study periods. Plan the bridge early and check whether your income crosses the limit.

Voluntary insurance: the costs

If you no longer have family insurance and no compulsory cover, you can insure yourself voluntarily under statutory insurance. The contribution base is at least one third of the reference earnings. For 2026 this gives a minimum health insurance contribution of 222.80 euros per month. Long-term care insurance adds 47.46 euros, or 55.37 euros with the childless surcharge (status 1 January 2026).

Assumption: you are 24, childless, without income and insure yourself voluntarily at the minimum contribution. Then you pay 222.80 euros for health insurance plus 55.37 euros for long-term care insurance, a total of 278.17 euros per month. Without the childless surcharge the total is 270.26 euros. The calculation shows how expensive a gap without income can become, and it is a reason to plan the transition early.

Unemployment benefit during the gap

You can only receive unemployment benefit I if you have worked in compulsory insurance for a sufficient period in recent years. The Federal Employment Agency checks this entitlement, which depends on a set qualifying period. Many graduates do not have enough insured time after their studies, because mini-jobs and working student roles are often exempt from insurance.

Register as job-seeking early anyway, as soon as the end of your employment is certain. If you resign or sign a termination agreement, a waiting period (Sperrzeit) can follow. Get advice from the Federal Employment Agency before such steps.

Child benefit in the transition period

Your parents child benefit depends on your training. The table summarises the main rules that the family benefits office (Familienkasse) of the Federal Employment Agency applies.

SituationRule for child benefit
First training or first degree up to age 25Entitlement without an employment limit, a mini-job does not count against it
Second training or second degreeOnly with employment of up to 20 hours per week
Transition period between training stagesUp to four months, for example between the end of studies and the start of a job
No training place foundUp to 25 with proof of search, up to 21 when registered as job-seeking without employment

The transition period is the key point for the gap. It only covers short periods, and the family benefits office examines each case. In longer breaks your parents lose the entitlement, so the family should go through the transition early.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to get health insurance straight after my studies?

The duty to be insured applies without interruption. If you start a job straight away, your employer makes you compulsorily insured. Notify your health insurer as soon as deregistration is certain, so that no gap arises.

Do I lose child benefit if I work in the gap?

After a first training, a mini-job does not count against it. For a second training or second degree, the limit of 20 hours per week applies. In case of doubt, agree your working hours with the family benefits office.

What happens if I miss the deadline for voluntary insurance?

Then you can no longer simply choose voluntary membership, and your cover has to be arranged differently. The deadline is short, so clarify joining with your insurer as early as possible.

Is a gap a good time for a trip or an insurer switch?

A break can make sense, but it costs cover and money if the insurance does not fit. A change of insurer is subject to a twelve-month binding period (section 175 para. 4 SGB V). Compare your options and speak to your insurer before you take any step.

What to do now

  1. Enter your deregistration date and your job start date in your calendar.
  2. Check whether you can stay in your parents family insurance, and compare your income with the 565 euro limit.
  3. Contact your health insurer and clarify voluntary membership within the deadline, if needed.
  4. Register early as job-seeking and clarify with the family benefits office how long child benefit runs.
