How are you insured in Cyprus?

The EHIC and your statutory health insurer

The EHIC is valid in Cyprus. The card is printed on the back of your German health insurance card. According to the European Commission, cardholders are entitled to benefits that become medically necessary during their stay. Treatment follows the rules of the country you are visiting. Students are expressly entitled to the card, which covers the treatment necessary for the duration of their stay.

The Federal Foreign Office states that statutory-insured people are entitled to urgently needed treatment, with the EHIC or a replacement certificate as proof. The page points to possibly long waiting times and notes that private clinics give self-paying patients direct access. The DAAD writes on its country page that insured people can use the services of the Cypriot health insurance funds. Stay with your statutory insurer and ask it to confirm cover abroad before you leave.

What the EHIC does not cover

According to the European Commission, the card does not cover planned treatment that can wait until you return, such as most dental work. It does not pay for transport home after a serious illness or accident, which needs separate insurance. The Federal Foreign Office also warns that bills often have to be settled before discharge and that unpaid bills can lead to a refusal to let you leave the country.

Private travel health insurance and repatriation

The Federal Foreign Office advises travel health insurance and medical evacuation insurance, that is, cover that includes repatriation. Our guide to travel health insurance (in German) explains what such a policy can cover. The guide private health insurance during a semester abroad (in German) helps to place the role of your statutory insurer.

Do you need a visa for Cyprus?

No. The Federal Foreign Office states that German citizens need no visa, not even for entering the northern part. Accepted documents are a passport, a provisional passport, an identity card, a provisional identity card and a child passport. The document must still be valid on entry and on departure. Cyprus is in the EU but not in the Schengen area, so border checks take place.

For a stay to study, Your Europe names three conditions. These are enrolment at an approved establishment, comprehensive health insurance and sufficient resources without social assistance. During the first three months your host country cannot require you to register. After that, it may require you to register your residence. The page lists the following proof.

  • Proof of enrolment at the host university
  • Proof of comprehensive health insurance
  • A declaration that you have sufficient resources and need no social assistance

The Federal Foreign Office has no travel warning for Cyprus (page as of 25 October 2026). The page explains that the Republic of Cyprus controls only the southern part and that consular support in the north is very limited. The buffer zone is a military restricted area and partly mined, and a strict photography ban applies near it. Bush and forest fires occur mainly in summer, and autumn storms up to Medicanes are possible from August to November. For 2026 the Federal Foreign Office reports increased West Nile fever cases, there is no vaccine, and it advises consistent mosquito protection.

What does a semester abroad in Cyprus cost?

Tuition fees

Erasmus+ students are exempt from fees for tuition, registration and examinations at the host university. According to the Erasmus+ page, small fees for insurance or student union membership may still apply. Your international office clarifies with the host university which fees apply to you.

If you study outside an exchange programme, other amounts apply. On its country page the DAAD cites about 3,500 euros a year for international students at public institutions and 2,500 to 7,000 euros for bachelor programmes at private institutions. The page is undated, so amounts may differ.

Living costs

The DAAD writes that living costs are somewhat lower than in Germany and plans on average about 700 euros a month for rent, food, books and leisure. This is an undated benchmark, not a budget. The University of Cyprus page on living in Nicosia (as of 24 March 2023) gives no amounts, says living expenses in Nicosia can be high and refers to the Housing Office for rents. Ask your host university for its budget for exchange students. The DAAD scholarship rate list shows 700 euros for students in Cyprus, undated and without a stated period.

Funding through Erasmus+ and Auslands-BAföG

The Erasmus+ grant contributes to travel and living costs and is not full funding. According to the Erasmus+ page, the amount depends partly on differences in living costs and the number of applicants. Your home or host university applies for the grants.

For Auslands-BAföG (German student aid abroad), the Deutsches Studierendenwerk assignment list names Studierendenwerk Marburg as the responsible office. More on requirements and amounts is in the Auslands-BAföG guide (in German). Under the BAföG foreign surcharge ordinance, a monthly foreign surcharge is paid only for training outside the EU and Switzerland, so it does not apply to Cyprus. A travel surcharge of 250 euros for the outward trip and the same for the return trip within Europe remains possible, as do necessary tuition fees up to 5,600 euros for at most one year and a surcharge towards health insurance costs on proof of cover.

Worked example

For a stay of five months, the DAAD benchmark gives 5 times 700 euros, that is 3,500 euros for rent, food, books and leisure. Tuition fees do not apply under Erasmus+, although small fees may arise. The travel flat rate in the BAföG ordinance is 2 times 250 euros, that is 500 euros for outward and return trips together, and applies only if you receive Auslands-BAföG. The total is a guide, not a commitment.

How to prepare before you leave

  1. Clarify with your university. Ask your international office whether your exchange runs through Erasmus+ and which fees apply.
  2. Learning agreement. Sign it with both universities before the stay.
  3. Travel document. Check that your passport or identity card is valid on entry and on departure.
  4. Health insurer. Have your insurer confirm cover abroad and take the EHIC with you.
  5. Travel insurance. Take out travel health and repatriation insurance, as the Federal Foreign Office advises.
  6. Health. Read the Federal Foreign Office notes on West Nile fever and plan mosquito protection.
  7. Residence. Keep proof of enrolment, proof of health insurance and a declaration of resources ready in case registration is required after three months.
  8. Auslands-BAföG. Apply about six months before departure at Studierendenwerk Marburg.
