How are you health insured in the Dominican Republic?

European Health Insurance Card and social security agreements

The Dominican Republic lies outside the EU, the EEA and Switzerland. The European Commission describes the area of validity of the European Health Insurance Card as the EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. The Dominican Republic is not on this list. Your card from your statutory health insurance fund therefore does not serve as proof of cover for treatment there.

According to the Federal Foreign Office, no social security agreement exists, which is why German statutory health insurers do not pay there. Ask your statutory health insurance fund in writing which benefits it provides for a stay outside the EU, and get the answer confirmed. The guide PKV für Studierende im Nicht-EU-Ausland (in German) summarises the basics for statutory insurance members outside the EU.

Health care in the Dominican Republic

There are no compulsory vaccinations for direct entry from Germany. If you enter from a yellow fever area, however, a yellow fever certificate is required. The Federal Foreign Office recommends the STIKO standard vaccinations and hepatitis A. For a long-term stay the page additionally names dengue, hepatitis B, typhoid and rabies, among others.

According to the Federal Foreign Office, treatment costs at practices and private clinics usually have to be paid before treatment. Anyone who cannot pay can be held until the costs are covered or paid. A simple insurance confirmation is not enough for many facilities. Ask your insurer before you leave how it settles bills in an emergency.

Private travel health insurance and repatriation

The Federal Foreign Office recommends taking out travel health and repatriation insurance. Which benefits you need depends on your contract, your university and the length of your stay. Background information is in the guide Auslandskrankenversicherung für Erasmus, USA und Work and Travel (in German).

Do you need a visa for the Dominican Republic?

For a single entry you are visa-free for up to 30 days with a German passport. The Federal Foreign Office lists the passport, the provisional passport and the children’s passport as admissible travel documents. Identity cards are not admissible. The passport must be valid for the entire length of stay, and the same applies to provisional passports. A valid return flight ticket must be presented.

An electronic e-ticket must be completed before every entry and exit. An extension beyond 30 days is applied for at the Ausländeramt (immigration office). It carries a fee, and the page does not state the amount. Without an extension, leaving after more than 30 days can bring a fine that depends on the length of the overstay.

Whether you need a visa for study in the Dominican Republic, and which one, is decided binding by the diplomatic mission of the country. We do not restate a rule of our own, because we have not found an official statement on it. For long-term residence, the so-called Residencia, the Federal Foreign Office names a visa that you apply for before entry at the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in Berlin or at a consulate general. Keep these documents ready:

  • Passport valid for the entire length of your stay
  • Valid return flight ticket for entry
  • Electronic e-ticket before entry and exit
  • Proof of travel health insurance with repatriation cover, as the Federal Foreign Office recommends

According to the Federal Foreign Office, no travel warning applies to the Dominican Republic (page status 25.10.2026). For the border with Haiti, the Federal Foreign Office strongly advises against overland travel to Haiti, and the border is partly closed. The page also names high crime, armed robberies including in Santo Domingo and tourist areas, and the traffic risk.

What does a study abroad semester cost in the Dominican Republic?

Tuition fees

Which fees apply at the host university depends on the exchange agreement of your home university. We do not name a general amount, because we have not found an official statement on it. Ask your home university and the host university before you accept a place.

Living costs

The DAAD sets a monthly scholarship rate of 800 euros for students in the Dominican Republic. This is a benchmark, not a budget. The DAAD scholarship rates list carries no date, so the currency of the figure cannot be read off it. Costs for accommodation and food depend on the location, so ask the host university what it budgets for exchange students.

Funding: Erasmus+ and study grant abroad (BAföG)

Your university decides whether it offers Erasmus+ funds for a study period in the Dominican Republic. The International Office provides information. More on planning is in the guide Erasmus und Auslandssemester planen (in German).

A study grant abroad (Auslands-BAföG) is possible for a partial study period abroad. According to the DSW assignment, the responsible office is the Studierendenwerk Bremen. The leaflet (status January 2026) requires a permanent residence in Germany, and funding starts at the earliest with the month in which the application is made. Outside the EU, the EEA and Switzerland, a foreign allowance may be added. Under the BAföG foreign allowance regulation it is a percentage of the need that the Federal Foreign Office sets. We have not found a euro amount for the Dominican Republic. All details are in the guide Auslands-BAföG: Voraussetzungen, Höhe und Zuschläge (in German).

Worked example: For a study stay of five months, the DAAD benchmark of 800 euros per month gives 4,000 euros for living costs. Tuition, insurance and flights are not included, because we have no verified amounts for them. The total is a guide, not a commitment.

How to prepare before you leave

  1. Have your health insurance fund confirm in writing which benefits it provides for a stay outside the EU.
  2. Take out travel health and repatriation insurance and clarify how it settles treatment on site.
  3. Check that your passport is valid for the entire length of your stay, and book the return flight.
  4. Complete the electronic e-ticket before entry and exit.
  5. Ask the diplomatic mission of the Dominican Republic which visa you need for your studies, and for stays beyond 30 days also about the extension.
  6. Clarify your vaccinations: STIKO standard vaccinations, hepatitis A, and the yellow fever certificate if you enter from a yellow fever area.
  7. Ask the International Office about fees, insurance requirements and the host university’s budget.
  8. Submit the study grant abroad application about six months before the start if you receive funding. The required details are in the guide Auslands-BAföG: Voraussetzungen, Höhe und Zuschläge (in German).
