How are you insured in Argentina?

European Health Insurance Card and social security agreement

According to the FAQ of the European Commission, the European Health Insurance Card applies in the EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Argentina is not named there, so the EU rules on treatment under the conditions of the host country do not apply.

We have not found a social security agreement with Argentina that covers health insurance, so we name none. Ask your health insurance fund to confirm its arrangement for Argentina in writing. The basics of private cover are explained in the guide PKV für Studierende im Nicht-EU-Ausland (in German).

Proof of insurance at entry

At entry you must present proof of valid travel or travel health insurance. It must cover medical emergencies, hospital stays and repatriation. The Federal Foreign Office additionally recommends medical evacuation insurance. Background information is in the guide Travel health insurance for Erasmus, USA and work and travel (in German).

Advance payment and refusal to leave

According to the office, bills from doctors and hospitals must in many countries be settled or paid up front before discharge. Unpaid bills can lead to a refusal to leave the country. Ask your insurer to confirm in writing that it reimburses advance payments.

Vaccinations and yellow fever

No vaccinations are required for direct entry from Germany. The Federal Foreign Office names yellow fever vaccinations for travel to Corrientes and Misiones, including Iguaçu, and possibly for Formosa, Chaco, Jujuy and Salta. It also mentions hepatitis A vaccination and the standard vaccinations, especially against measles.

Do you need a visa for Argentina?

Tourists with a biometric or provisional passport need no visa for up to 90 days. Accepted documents are passport, provisional passport and children’s passport. The identity card and the provisional identity card are not accepted. The document must be valid on entry, and the office recommends validity beyond your stay.

An extension is possible on site at the immigration authority Migraciones, but there is no entitlement to it. The Federal Foreign Office does not name study explicitly. For a longer stay or gainful employment you should contact the Argentine consulate before departure. We therefore do not state a reliable visa rule for your study stay.

The Federal Foreign Office has rated the security level as high nationwide since 28 February 2026. Crime is high, and robberies occur even during the day. Demonstrations, known as piquetes, and riots at football matches are possible. In Patagonia an emergency due to forest fires was declared on 30 January 2026 in Chubut, Río Negro, Neuquén and La Pampa (status of the page 24 October 2026).

What does a study abroad semester in Argentina cost?

Tuition fees

Which fees apply at the host university depends on the exchange agreement of your home university. We do not name a general amount, because we have no official figure that we can cite. Ask your home university and the host university before you accept a place.

Living costs

We do not state a sourced monthly amount for living costs. Ask your host university for its budget for exchange students and for dormitory costs. Without an official or university source we do not calculate a total.

Funding: Erasmus+ and Auslands-BAföG

Argentina belongs in the Erasmus+ programme guide to the Latin American third countries that are not associated with the programme and can take part only in certain actions. More on this in the guide Planning Erasmus and a semester abroad (in German).

According to the flyer of the German Student Services Organisation (status January 2026), Auslands-BAföG is possible for Argentina. The responsible office is the Studierendenwerk Bremen, telephone 0421/2201-0. Outside the EU and Switzerland, funding covers at most two semesters, and at least one year of study in Germany is required beforehand. A study abroad period lasts at least six months. All details are in the guide Auslands-BAföG: requirements, amounts and supplements (in German).

How to prepare before you leave

  1. Ask your health insurance fund to confirm in writing how you are insured in Argentina before you sign the learning agreement.
  2. Take out travel health insurance covering emergencies, hospital stays and repatriation, and print the proof for entry.
  3. Check that your passport is valid on entry and plan validity beyond your stay.
  4. Contact the Argentine consulate before you book for study, and clarify visa and residence rules.

  7. Inform yourself about safety at your study location, especially about demonstrations and crime.
