Tutoring is one of the most common side incomes during university, and the question of when it triggers income tax comes down to one figure: the basic allowance (Grundfreibetrag). If your tutoring income stays below it, you pay no income tax, although you may still have to file a return. This guide shows which figures count and how to place your year.

Short answer: Income tax is due once your taxable income for the year exceeds the basic allowance (Grundfreibetrag). For 2026 it is 12,348 euros under § 32a EStG. The government draft for 2027 shows 12,564 euros. The Bundestag debated it in first reading on 8 October 2026, and as of 2 November 2026 the legislative process is not complete. What counts is the total of all your income, not tutoring alone. Last updated: November 2026.

The most important points at a glance

  • The basic allowance is 12,348 euros per year for 2026 (§ 32a EStG). Below it, no income tax arises.
  • For 2027 the government draft of the income tax reform (cabinet, 2 September 2026) shows 12,564 euros. The Bundestag debated the draft in first reading on 8 October 2026 and referred it to committees; the process is not complete.
  • What counts is taxable income. It is built from all income, less business expenses, income-related expenses (Werbungskosten) and special expenses (Sonderausgaben).
  • Tutoring paid as a fee usually counts as self-employment. Then the profit counts, meaning receipts minus expenses, not turnover.
  • A tax-free trainer allowance depends on a specific client and usually does not apply to private fees.

At what income do you pay income tax on tutoring?

The income tax scale starts with a basic allowance. If your taxable income for the year is below it, the tax is zero (§ 32a EStG). What matters is therefore not your hourly rate but what remains at year end after all deductions. The table separates law in force from what is planned.

Which type of income is tutoring?

Tax law knows two typical situations for tutoring. If a tutoring institute employs you and pays wages, this is employment income. The employer withholds wage tax, and you are entitled to the employee allowance of 1,230 euros (§ 9a EStG) without proving any expenses. If you teach on your own account, for example students who pay you directly, you work out a profit: receipts minus the expenses connected with tutoring, such as travel or teaching material.

Which situation applies depends on the actual arrangement and is assessed by the tax office. Platforms sometimes offer both models. For an overview of earnings and matching, see Nachhilfe-Plattformen im Vergleich (in German). For tutoring as a mini-job, see Nachhilfe als Minijob (in German).

Does the trainer allowance apply to private tutoring?

The trainer allowance under § 3 no. 26 EStG exempts part-time work as a trainer, instructor, educator, carer or in a comparable role up to 3,300 euros a year. It requires a specific client: a public-law legal entity based in the EU, the EEA or Switzerland, or an institution privileged under § 5 (1) no. 9 KStG, and the work must serve charitable, benevolent or church purposes. Parents or students who pay you privately do not meet this. If you teach on behalf of such an institution, for example a non-profit association, the allowance may come into play. The tax office decides case by case whether your work qualifies.

Note also that expenses connected with tax-free income are deductible only to the extent they exceed the tax-free income (§ 3 no. 26 EStG).

How do you work through your year?

The examples below are simplified and show only the logic. They do not calculate tax in euros but test whether you cross the threshold. Social contributions and further special expenses reduce your income additionally and are not included.

Assumption A: In 2026 you tutor only on a self-employed basis. Receipts are 4,800 euros and expenses 600 euros. The profit of 4,200 euros is well below 12,348 euros. No income tax arises.

Assumption B: You work as a working student with 9,000 euros of wages and also tutor on a self-employed basis with 4,000 euros of profit. The 1,230 euro allowance comes off the wages, leaving 7,770 euros. Together with tutoring this gives 11,770 euros, which is below the basic allowance. No tax arises. A tax return may still be required, as the next section shows.

Assumption C: Your total profit is 14,000 euros. Then income exceeds the basic allowance, and the scale under § 32a EStG applies to the excess. To calculate the amount you can use the tax calculator of the Federal Ministry of Finance.

Do you have to declare tutoring income in a tax return?

Where wages are subject to withholding, an assessment takes place only in certain cases (§ 46 (2) EStG). These include income not subject to wage tax of more than 410 euros a year (no. 1) and wages from several employers (no. 2). If you earn more than 410 euros from self-employed tutoring alongside a working student job, a tax return is therefore generally required, even if no tax results. If you only tutor and receive no wages, clarify the filing duty with the tax office, which informs you once the activity is registered.

Regardless of any duty, you can apply for an assessment (§ 46 (2) no. 8 EStG), for instance to recover withheld wage tax. More in Tax Return for Students: How to Get Your Money Back and in Fristen für die Erklärung 2026 (in German).

What changes in 2027?

The government draft of the Income Tax Reform Act 2027, adopted by the Federal Cabinet on 2 September 2026, provides for a basic allowance of 12,564 euros for 2027. The figure becomes binding only with the promulgated law. According to the Bundestag report of 8 October 2026 (printed paper 21/8235, retrieved 2 November 2026), the draft was debated in first reading and referred to committees, with the Finance Committee in the lead. For 2028 the draft provides a further increase to 12,900 euros. You can follow the current status on the website of the German Bundestag. Frequently asked questions

Do I have to declare tutoring to the tax office?

Income from tutoring is generally relevant for tax even if no tax is due in the end. Whether you must file a return depends on the type of income and your total income. Alongside wages, the limit of 410 euros of income not subject to wage tax applies (§ 46 (2) no. 1 EStG).

Does the employee allowance apply to self-employed tutoring?

No. The employee allowance of 1,230 euros applies to income from employment (§ 9a EStG). For self-employed tutoring you deduct your actual business expenses.

How high can my tutoring profit be without paying tax?

If tutoring is your only income, the limit in 2026 is the basic allowance of 12,348 euros of taxable income. If you have other income, such as a working student job, that income uses up part of the allowance. Special expenses and insurance contributions can widen the margin.

What changes in 2027 if the higher basic allowance comes?

In the draft the basic allowance for 2027 is 12,564 euros, which is 216 euros more than in 2026. The Bundestag debated the draft in first reading on 8 October 2026. The value in the promulgated law is what counts.

Does tutoring income affect BAföG or child benefit?

Both have their own income rules, which do not match the basic allowance. For BAföG, see BAföG Income Limit 2026: How Much Can You Earn?. For child benefit, see Kindergeld und Nebenjob (in German).

How to proceed now

  1. Add up your expected annual tutoring receipts and subtract the expenses you can document.
  2. Add other income, for example from a working student job, and compare the total with the basic allowance for the year.
  3. Clarify whether your tutoring is employment or on your own account, and keep fee statements and receipts.
  4. Check whether a filing duty exists (more than 410 euros of income not subject to wage tax alongside wages) and plan for the deadline.
  5. If the classification is unclear, ask the tax office or get personal advice, for example through Academycon.
