What changes for taxes in 2027 depends mainly on one figure: the basic allowance (Grundfreibetrag). It is the taxable income up to which no income tax is due. For 2027, the government draft of the income tax reform sets a higher amount, but the law has not yet been passed.
Short answer: According to the government draft, the basic allowance rises from 12,348 euros (2026, official) to 12,564 euros (2027). The federal cabinet adopted the draft on 2 September 2026. The Bundestag and the Bundesrat still have to deliberate and pass it. Last updated: November 2026.
The most important points at a glance
- The basic allowance for 2026 is 12,348 euros and is officially set (section 32a EStG).
- The government draft proposes 12,564 euros for 2027 and 12,900 euros for 2028. Neither figure is law yet.
- Child benefit (Kindergeld) is to rise to 267 euros per child and month in 2027, from 259 euros. This is also part of the draft.
- For the 2026 tax return without a tax adviser, the deadline is 2 August 2027.
- Taxing crypto gains without a holding period appears in a draft from the Federal Ministry of Finance (Referentenentwurf). There is no law on it yet.
- The employee lump sum (Arbeitnehmer-Pauschbetrag) is 1,230 euros in 2026. An increase for 2027 has been announced, but the new amount is not yet fixed.
How high is the basic allowance in 2027?
The basic allowance is the amount you can earn in a year without paying income tax. What counts is your taxable income, meaning income after deducting work-related expenses, special expenses and other allowances.
| Tax year | Basic allowance | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 12,348 euros | official, section 32a EStG | gesetze-im-internet.de (in German) |
| 2027 | 12,564 euros | government draft, cabinet 2 September 2026 | bundesregierung.de (in German) |
| 2028 | 12,900 euros | government draft | bundesregierung.de (in German) |
Assumption: your taxable income in 2027 is exactly 12,564 euros. Under the draft, no income tax would then be due. Above that amount, the progressive tariff under section 32a EStG applies.
What applies to part-time jobs and a first job?
For part-time work and a first job, tax looks at your total annual income, not at a single monthly wage. Wage tax is deducted as you go, but at year end you may receive a refund or owe a payment. How to have a tax allowance (Freibetrag) entered is explained in Lohnsteuer-Freibetrag beim Finanzamt eintragen lassen (in German).
Whether the effort pays off depends on your income and deductions. Steuer-Checkliste für den ersten Job: Diese Unterlagen brauchst du (in German) summarises the steps for a first job, and Lohnsteuerjahresausgleich: Wann sich der Antrag beim Arbeitgeber lohnt (in German) explains the annual wage tax adjustment.
Which tax plans are decided and which are only proposed?
Not every change is at the same stage. The overview below separates the status: decided with a date, in progress, or only proposed.
| Topic | Status | |

When is the 2026 tax return due?
The standard deadline for the 2026 tax return without a tax adviser is 31 July 2027. Because that day is a Saturday, the deadline moves under section 108 (3) AO to the next working day, which is 2 August 2027. With a tax adviser the deadline is extended. The details are in Steuererklärung mit Steuerberater: Fristverlängerung erklärt (in German).
To prepare the return:
- Note 2 August 2027 as the filing deadline without a tax adviser.
- Collect your wage tax certificate, receipts and proofs as you go. Steuer-Checkliste für den ersten Job: Diese Unterlagen brauchst du (in German) lists the documents needed for a first job.
- Check in advance whether a return is worth filing for you. Steuererklärung ohne Steuerberater: Lohnt sich das für Studierende? (in German) helps with that.
Which deductions count for students?
For students, tax issues are mostly work-related expenses from part-time jobs and costs linked to training. The employee lump sum of 1,230 euros (2026, section 9a EStG) applies without individual proof. Higher costs must be proven.

Which rules apply to families and children?
The government draft provides for 2027 child benefit of 267 euros per child and month and a child allowance of 10,056 euros. Neither is decided yet. The tax office checks in the assessment whether the allowance or child benefit is more favourable for you. Kindergeld oder Kinderfreibetrag: Welche Günstigerprüfung 2027 zählt (in German) explains this.
Frequently asked questions
Will the basic allowance really rise in 2027?
According to the government draft, yes, to 12,564 euros. The cabinet has adopted the draft, but it only applies after it is passed and promulgated. Until then, 12,348 euros is the official figure for 2026.
Do I have to do anything in 2027?
The draft does not require a direct step from you. One exception is a wage tax allowance, which you apply for yourself at the tax office. The steps are in Lohnsteuer-Freibetrag beim Finanzamt eintragen lassen (in German).
Does taxing crypto gains already apply from 2027?
No. The plans are in a draft from the Federal Ministry of Finance. A draft is not yet a law, and the rules can change before they are passed. Details are in Krypto-Gewinne ab 2027 mit 25 Prozent: Rechenbeispiel für den Entwurf (in German).
Where can I find binding figures?
The law text is available at gesetze-im-internet.de. The status of the legislative process is shown at bundesregierung.de. For your personal tax burden, the assessment by the tax office is decisive.
