The pension waiting period of 5 years is the minimum time you must reach in the German statutory pension insurance (gesetzliche Rentenversicherung) before a pension claim can arise at all. Many people first think about it during their studies or first job, because periods without contributions can change their status later.

Short answer: The general waiting period in the German statutory pension insurance is five years. Under § 50 para. 1 SGB VI (German Social Code, Book VI), it is a precondition for the old-age pension, the pension for reduced earning capacity and the survivors pension. Which periods count is shown in your pension statement from the Deutsche Rentenversicherung. Last updated: November 2026.

The most important points

  • The general waiting period is five years.
  • It is a precondition for three types of pension: the standard old-age pension, the pension for reduced earning capacity and the survivors pension.
  • Whether the waiting period is met follows from your insurance record, not from an estimate.
  • Gaps are easiest to spot early, for example during studies or in the first years of work.
  • If in doubt, the Deutsche Rentenversicherung (German Pension Insurance) confirms your status in a binding way.

What the five-year waiting period regulates

The provision sets out that meeting the general waiting period of five years is a precondition for a claim to three types of pension. It also states when the waiting period counts as met for the standard old-age pension: if you received a pension for reduced earning capacity or an education pension (Erziehungsrente) up to the standard retirement age. For the survivors pension, the status of the deceased insured person counts, if that person was receiving a pension until death.

Which periods count towards the waiting period?

The law does not work with a single list but refers to different types of periods. Whether employment, training, child-rearing or phases without contributions are credited depends on the individual case. The reliable way to find out is to check your own insurance record.

Why the waiting period matters for young people

Gaps often arise during studies and the start of a career, and they are not always noticed at once. Our guide on pension insurance during studies (in German) explains how contribution periods during studies work. For doctoral candidates, the question of contributions is covered separately in doctoral studies and pension insurance (in German).

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I do not reach the five years?

Then there is no entitlement to the three pension types listed above from the statutory pension insurance, because meeting the waiting period is a precondition. Which steps make sense depends on which periods are still missing. The Deutsche Rentenversicherung clarifies this on the basis of your record.

Does the waiting period also apply to the pension for reduced earning capacity?

Yes. The provision names the pension for reduced earning capacity explicitly as a claim for which the general waiting period must be met. Additional conditions apply to this pension, which are checked case by case.

Where can I see my current status?

In the pension statement of the Deutsche Rentenversicherung. It contains the insurance record on which the waiting period is based. If you have never read the statement, it is worth doing so before decisions on retirement provision or career choices.

What should I do if a period is missing?

Clarify discrepancies with the Deutsche Rentenversicherung as early as possible and bring any existing evidence. A correction later is often more complicated than a check in the first years of work.

What to do next

  1. Request your pension statement from the Deutsche Rentenversicherung and read the insurance record.
  2. Mark periods without an entry, especially studies, doctoral work and phases without employment.
  3. Collect missing evidence, such as certificates for training or child-rearing.
  4. Have unclear points clarified with the Deutsche Rentenversicherung.
  5. For a personal assessment, you can contact Academycon (see how we work).

A worked example of the waiting period

Assumption: after your Abitur you work for three years subject to social insurance contributions, and then study for two years without contribution periods. Arithmetically, you then have three years with contributions. Two years are missing to reach five. Whether those study years count does not follow from simple addition alone, but from the crediting rules for that period. The pension statement shows this assessment.

The example shows why mental arithmetic helps little. Two periods of equal length can count differently depending on their type. The entry in the insurance record is decisive.

Which documents you need for the check

  • Your insurance number from a pension notice or an insurance certificate.
  • Employment contracts and payslips showing employment periods.
  • Evidence of training or studies with start and end dates.
  • Birth certificates of your children, if periods of child-rearing need to be clarified.

Why an early check also matters for the pension for reduced earning capacity

The pension for reduced earning capacity has further conditions besides the general waiting period. According to the wording of § 43 SGB VI (in German), three years of contributions must exist in the five years before reduced earning capacity sets in. Identifying gaps early allows you to clarify questions of protection before an illness or accident changes the situation.

Common mistakes when reading the record

  • Gaps are overlooked because only the most recent years are checked.
  • Periods abroad or from training phases are not cross-checked.
  • The record is read once and never reviewed again.

How to clarify your status with the pension insurer

If the record shows gaps, a structured approach helps. Prepare your request in writing so that the conversation or enquiry does not stay general. Name the period in question and the entry you consider wrong or incomplete.

  • Describe the period with start, end and the type of activity or phase.
  • Enclose the evidence that documents the period.
  • Ask how the period is recorded in the record and whether it is credited.
  • Ask for a written answer so that you can prove your status later.

The answer is information on your individual case. It does not replace a personal review of your entire provision, but it shows whether the waiting period is met with the periods you already have.
