Sentry for students is an offer for software projects during your studies. The tool captures errors in web and app applications and shows where they occur. If you build a web application for a thesis or work on a team project, errors are hard to trace without an error log. This guide explains what the provider offers students, how to activate the education account and what to keep in mind afterwards.
Short answer: Sentry gives students a free education account that is unlocked through the GitHub Student Developer Pack. It includes, among other things, 50,000 errors, 500 replays and a one-year term, which according to the GitHub Pack page can be extended. Sentry names no countries, so your GitHub eligibility decides. Last updated: October 2026, offers change often.

Offer at a glance
The table summarises what the provider’s education page states. The regular price column points to the pricing page, because the education page does not list euro amounts. According to the provider, team members are unlimited.
| Service | Regular price | Price for students | Term | Verification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Error monitoring (50,000 errors) | see provider’s page | included in the education account | 1 year | GitHub Student Developer Pack |
| Logs (5 GB) | see provider’s page | included in the education account | 1 year | GitHub Student Developer Pack |

The figures come from the provider’s education page. The GitHub Pack page additionally lists 100,000 transactions and team features. Check both pages before you sign up, because allowances and conditions can change.
How to activate the offer
Access runs through the GitHub Student Developer Pack. These steps follow the order the provider describes. Our guide to the GitHub Student Developer Pack explains the requirements.
- Apply for the GitHub Student Developer Pack. GitHub checks your student status during this process.
- Wait until the pack is approved. The Sentry education account only becomes available after that.
- Follow the activation steps on Sentry’s education page.
- Create a project, add the matching SDK to your application and trigger a test error to check that data arrives.
- Note the end date of the one-year term so that you can plan your thesis and project around it.
Before you add the SDK, read the privacy section below. There you decide which data is sent to the provider.
Where does Sentry make sense in your studies?
Sentry is most useful where an application runs live and errors do not show up immediately. Typical examples are a web application that test users use for a thesis, or a team project in which several people work on the same code and need to trace errors back to their origin.
If you only maintain a small website or run a script, you may need less tooling. For monitoring servers and infrastructure, another provider is often a better fit, such as Datadog. There is a separate guide for students: Datadog for students. Compare the options before you decide rather than committing to one tool.
Privacy and university rules
Error reports can contain personal data, such as user IDs, IP addresses or input from forms. Before you install the SDK, check which fields your program sends to the provider, and filter sensitive fields in the configuration. If you collect data from real test participants, you need a legal basis for it and must inform them.
Your university’s rules also apply. The examination regulations and the rules on AI, software and research data decide what you may name or use in a thesis. If a tool has AI features, check its output yourself before you adopt it. More on this in the guide on data protection for AI tools in studies.
What happens after your studies?
The education account is tied to the GitHub Student Developer Pack and therefore to your student status. The Sentry page names a term of one year, and the GitHub Pack page says it can be extended. Plan early which projects you will continue and which plan applies afterwards. The prices are on the provider’s pricing page.
Save any evaluations you need for a thesis or report before the account ends. Do not assume that data in the account will stay unchanged after it expires.
Frequently asked questions
Is Sentry free for students?
According to the provider’s education page, students can use Sentry for free. The education account through the GitHub Student Developer Pack runs for one year and includes the allowances listed above. The pricing page shows how the regular plans compare.
Does the offer apply in Germany?
The Sentry page does not list countries. What matters is therefore your eligibility through the GitHub Student Developer Pack. Check the requirements on the pack’s page, and ask the provider if you are unsure.
How long does the education account last?
One year. The GitHub Pack page says it can be extended. Note the end date and check the conditions well before it expires.
Can I name Sentry in my thesis?
Your university’s examination regulations and your supervisor decide this. In the thesis, briefly describe which tool you used for error logs and what it contributed to your evaluation.
Do I have to protect my users’ data in a special way?
Yes, as soon as real people are affected. Collect only what you need for debugging and inform test participants about the data collection. If you are unsure, your university’s data protection office can help.
