In computer science, business informatics and engineering, programming is part of everyday study, and AI assistants are now a standard part of many development environments. In coursework, though, code that you can only write with an assistant helps little if the basics are missing. This guide shows when Copilot really helps, which student offers are documented and where the limits lie.
Short answer: AI assistants such as GitHub Copilot help with routine code, tests and debugging, but add little if you do not yet understand the concepts or if exams are held without aids. According to GitHub Education, Copilot is free for verified students in the Student Developer Pack for as long as the student status lasts. Last updated: October 2026, offers change often.
The key points
- Copilot is a tool for writing code, not a replacement for understanding algorithms, data structures and errors.
- According to the providers, GitHub Copilot and the JetBrains Student Pack are free for verified students. The conditions depend on your student status.
- Many other services have no documented student offer. Check the provider page before you assume a discount.
- Before you use an assistant in exercises and exams, the rules of your module apply. Ask the lecturer if they are unclear.
- Code you cannot explain is worthless to you as soon as an exam or a conversation about it takes place.
When does Copilot help in your studies?
Copilot is strongest with recurring tasks that keep you from the actual problem. Typical examples are:
- Standard code such as database access, configuration files or simple loops whose pattern you already understand.
- Test cases for a function you wrote yourself, so that you see edge cases you might otherwise miss.
- Explanations of error messages when you want to understand the process and not only the solution.
- Renaming and small restructurings that touch many places and are purely mechanical.
When does Copilot get in the way?
It becomes a problem as soon as the assistant replaces the thinking that your studies are meant to teach you. Anyone who only assembles tasks by clicking will recognise no pattern in an exam and cannot find errors in their own code. There are also practical risks: AI code can contain security holes, use unsuitable libraries or make wrong assumptions that only show up on close reading.
Pay attention to data protection and confidentiality as well. Do not paste personal data, access credentials or unpublished research data into an assistant. For theses or projects with companies, their rules apply in addition.
Which offers exist for students?
The table shows the offers we could trace on the provider pages on 26 October 2026. Where a price is not documented, we refer to the provider page. We only give euro amounts where the provider states them.
| Offer | Benefit | Regular price | Student price | Duration | Verification |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GitHub Copilot (Student Developer Pack) | Code completion, chat with automatically selected models, AI credits | See GitHub page | 0 euros | As long as you are a verified student | GitHub Education |
| JetBrains Student Pack | All IDEs, courses, according to the provider a free AI Pro trial period | Depends on product, see provider page | 0 euros, for non-commercial use | Renewed annually | University email, ISIC/ITIC or GitHub |
| Windsurf for Students | Windsurf Pro at a reduced monthly price | See provider page | Reduced, amount not stated | Up to 12 months, renewal possible afterwards | Name, university, email, documents if needed |
| Codecademy Pro Student | Learning courses on programming languages | See provider page | According to the provider, more than 35 % off | Not documented | Student verification |
| Google Colab | Cloud notebooks, Python | See price page | Student offer mentioned, conditions not checked | Not documented | Not documented |
| Microsoft 365 with Copilot | Office applications with Copilot | Not documented for Germany | 50 % discount in the US according to the provider, not checked for Germany | Not documented | University email |
According to our review, Cursor and Replit name no concrete student subscription. Cursor offers a free start, and discounts exist only through campus campaigns. Replit does not have a student offer on its price page.
How do you activate the student offer?
The steps for GitHub are typical for how student offers are issued, but details can change. Therefore check the current process on the GitHub page.
- Log in with your GitHub account and open the page of the Student Developer Pack.
- Apply for membership and submit proof of your student status, for example a university email address or a student card.
- Wait for the confirmation. It can take some time, so check your inbox and notifications.
- After confirmation, check in your account settings that Copilot is active as a student offer.
How verification works with other services is explained in our guide Student Verification Explained: SheerID, UNiDAYS, Student Beans and University Email (in German).
What applies to AI code in exercises and exams?
The rules differ widely. Some modules explicitly allow assistants, others exclude them from written exams. What counts is the examination regulation, the module description and the lecturer’s instructions. If you are unsure, have the rule confirmed in writing before you use an assistant. That protects you if questions about your own work come up later.
Frequently asked questions
Is Copilot allowed in my studies?
That depends on the module and the university. Many courses allow AI assistants for exercise tasks but exclude them from exams. Ask if you are unsure before you submit the code.
Do I need Copilot at all?
No. If you want to learn programming well, it helps most to solve tasks yourself and learn from your errors. An assistant is an option for routine work, not a compulsory part of your studies.
What happens to my code when I use Copilot?
That depends on the settings and the provider’s current terms of use. Check them in your account before you paste code from private or confidential projects. Sensitive content does not belong in an assistant in any case.
How do I notice that I rely too much on the assistant?
A simple test helps: can you explain a section of your code line by line within a few minutes without the assistant? If not, you have taken over part of it without understanding it. Then rebuild the solution without help and compare the differences. This is more demanding, but that is where the knowledge that counts in exams and projects is built.
Are there free alternatives to Copilot?
Yes, for exercises free environments such as Google Colab or Kaggle are often enough, and Kaggle is free for everyone according to our review. What matters is that you understand the code. A free tool does not replace this learning step.
What to do now
- Clarify the AI rules of your module before you use an assistant in exercises.
- Check whether your provider’s student offer applies to you and note when your entitlement ends.
- Write the critical parts yourself and use the assistant to explain, test and review.
- Document your working steps so that you can prove your own work if questions arise.
What happens after your studies?
The student offer ends with your enrolment once the proof no longer applies. Then regular prices apply, or a licence through your employer. Code created in companies is also subject to the employer’s rules on data protection, licences and security. What you learn about examinations and source work during your studies goes with you into your career.
