Studying in Konstanz means living at Lake Constance, at a university in a city with a tight housing market and close to the Swiss border. For the semester fee there are two statements that contradict each other: the Seezeit fee schedule and the university re-registration page with a standard rate. This guide sets out both, names rents with their source and marks the costs that remain open.

Short answer: The University of Konstanz lists a standard rate (Regelbetrag) of 209 euros on its re-registration page, without an explicit reference to winter semester 2026/27 (no semester stated, retrieved October 2026). The fee schedule of Seezeit gives 115.00 euros per semester for the University of Konstanz from winter semester 2025/26, including a solidarity contribution of 22.00 euros for the semester ticket. The two figures do not match. Re-registration for the winter semester runs from 15 July to 15 August, and a late-payment fee of 20 euros applies.

Key points at a glance

  • The fee schedule of Seezeit gives 115.00 euros per semester for the University of Konstanz and 112.50 euros for the HTWG Konstanz, valid from winter semester 2025/26.
  • The 115.00 euros include a solidarity contribution of 22.00 euros for the semester ticket of the Stadtwerke Konstanz, which Seezeit passes on to the transport companies.
  • The re-registration page of the university gives a standard rate of 209 euros with no semester stated. An English-language page speaks of 95 euros student services fee and gives no date. Which figure applies cannot be settled from the sources.
  • According to the DAAD dormitory finder, Seezeit dormitory rooms cost 362 to 380 euros in a shared flat and 566 euros for a studio apartment, without a status date.
  • The administrative fee (Verwaltungskostenbeitrag) and the student body fee (Beitrag der Studierendenschaft) are on your notice; we do not give a figure for them.

How high is the Seezeit fee in Konstanz?

Seezeit, the Studierendenwerk Bodensee, levies its fee as a solidarity contribution, so it is due regardless of how much you use the services. The fee schedule replaces the 2022 version and applies from winter semester 2025/26. If you are enrolled at two of the universities named, you pay only the higher amount.

UniversitySeezeit fee per semester
University of Konstanz115.00 euros
HTWG Konstanz (University of Applied Sciences)112.50 euros
Ravensburg-Weingarten University of Applied Sciences110.50 euros
Weingarten University of Education110.50 euros
DHBW Ravensburg (Cooperative State University)57.50 euros

For the University of Konstanz, the 115.00 euros include 22.00 euros of semester ticket solidarity contribution. The Seezeit page lists refunds if you enrol within one month after the start of lectures, deregister or change universities. Severely disabled people entitled to free local transport can apply for a refund of the ticket portion, but only until one day before the start of the semester.

Why do 115 and 209 euros not match?

Two sources contradict each other. The Seezeit fee schedule, valid from winter semester 2025/26, gives 115.00 euros. The re-registration page of the University of Konstanz gives a standard rate of 209 euros, with no semester stated and the note currently. The sources do not explain the difference. In case of doubt, the amount on your notice decides.

The total semester fee contains further items that the pages checked do not quantify, including the administrative fee of the university and the student body fee. Calculation example with the verified Seezeit figure (assumption: 115.00 euros, semester of six months): about 19.17 euros per month for this item alone.

What do Seezeit dormitory rooms cost in Konstanz?

Seezeit allocates dormitory places in Konstanz. For the Seerhein residence on Hindenburgstraße, the DAAD dormitory finder lists monthly rents. The page carries no date, so the figures are an orientation, not a price list.

Room type (Seerhein residence)PlacesRent per month
Room in a 3-person shared flat, approx. 11 m², furnished30362 euros
Room in a 4-person shared flat, 10 to 14.5 m²160369 to 380 euros
Studio apartment, approx. 31 m²3566 euros

For the private market we do not state a rent without a source. A price comparison is still worthwhile, because Konstanz is one of the tight housing markets. Strategy and portals are covered in our guide Affordable student housing: strategy, portals and costs. Example calculation (assumption: shared flat room at 375 euros, Seezeit fee of 19.17 euros per month, and health and long-term care insurance of 142.96 euros for under 23s without children): together about 537 euros per month, before the administrative fee, food and study materials.

Which health insurance do you need as a student in Konstanz?

The same rules apply in Konstanz as in the rest of Germany. Neither the university nor the university of applied sciences changes the insurance obligation. What matters is your family insurance and the additional contribution (Zusatzbeitrag) of your health insurer.

ComponentCalculationMonthlySource and status
Health insurance share without additional contribution10.22 percent of 855 euros87.38 eurosGKV-Spitzenverband, January 2026
Additional contribution, average2.9 percent of 855 euros24.80 eurosFederal Ministry of Health (BMG), 2026, depends on the insurer
Long-term care insurance with a child or up to age 233.6 percent of 855 euros30.78 eurosGKV-Spitzenverband, January 2026
Long-term care insurance from age 23 without children4.2 percent of 855 euros35.91 eurosGKV-Spitzenverband, January 2026

The assessment base of 855 euros comes from the BAföG needs assessment for students who do not live with their parents (§ 236 SGB V, valid since October 2024). The calculation uses the average additional contribution of 2.9 percent as an assumption. Without the childless surcharge the result is 142.96 euros per month; with the surcharge from age 23 it is 148.09 euros.

The obligation ends at the end of the semester in which you turn 30 (§ 5 SGB V, status January 2026). If you commute across the border region or work in Switzerland, clarify the insurance obligation with your health insurer early. A comparison of the routes is in our guide PKV or GKV as a Student: Which Option Fits Your Situation, and a personal assessment is possible through our team (how we work, in German).

Which universities are there in Konstanz?

The University of Konstanz was founded in 1966. The Konstanz University of Applied Sciences (HTWG) offers programmes in engineering, business and design. Both have their own fee overviews, so the notice from your own university is decisive.

The student services organisation responsible for dormitories, canteens and advice on social benefits is the place to ask. Ask there about current places and application deadlines.

How do you get around Konstanz affordably?

Whether a semester ticket suits you depends on the information from your university. Check whether it is included in the semester fee or charged separately, and which exemptions apply. Everyday tips are in our guide Cheap Travel as a Student: Tips for a Small Budget.

Which funding helps you in Konstanz?

Konstanz applies the same federal law as everywhere else, namely the student financial aid scheme BAföG (Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz). Students under 25 who live away from home receive at most 855 euros per month from the basic needs allowance (475 euros) and the housing allowance (380 euros), status January 2026 according to Studierendenwerke.

Support is paid half as a grant and half as a loan. What the authority approves matters, not the upper limit. Details on applications and deadlines are in our guide BAföG 2026: Eligibility, Amount and Repayment Explained.
