Occupational disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU) for civil engineering students raises a particular question: will you later work mainly in the office on planning and structural analysis, or on the building site? That distinction often decides how you are classified.
Short answer: Under Section 172 (2) VVG (German Insurance Contract Act), you are occupationally disabled if you are likely to be permanently unable to carry out your most recently practised profession (Stand: October 2026). For civil engineers, what matters is how office and site work are split within the job. The referral to other activities is also important. The premium depends on entry age, health, pension amount and term. There is no fixed figure.
The Essentials at a Glance
- Site management and structural planning at a desk are often classified differently.
- Hazards such as falls, noise, dust, heat and heavy lifting should be described factually in the application.
- For physically demanding jobs, the health questions about the spine, knees, shoulders and hearing are close at hand.
- An office-based referral can play a bigger role in the contract than you might expect.
- You influence the premium mainly through the pension amount, the term and the contract clauses.
Office, Planning or Site: How Is the Job Classified?
Civil engineers work in very different roles. Structural design and structural analysis take place mainly in the office, while site management and construction supervision require presence on the site. Many mixed forms lie in between.
- Structural design and analysis with calculations, plans and coordination
- Site management with daily work on site and coordination of the trades
- Construction supervision for public clients with inspection visits
- Construction administration or project control, mainly office work
A classification based on the job title alone is not enough. Describe in the application what share falls to the site and what share to the office. Many insurers ask specifically about activities on site, so it is worth clarifying this in advance. Note how many days a month you expect to be on site and whether responsibility for staff or deadlines is added. These details make your role concrete.
Which Health Questions Are Close at Hand for Civil Engineers?
The questions relate to your state of health, regardless of your field of study. For physically demanding activities, the spine, knees, shoulders and hearing are obvious topics. Add the consequences of earlier accidents, such as fractures or joint injuries, even if they appear to have healed.
Under Section 19 (1) VVG, you must disclose the circumstances asked about in text form. If you breach this duty, the insurer can withdraw under subsection (2). Under subsection (3), the right to withdraw is excluded if the breach was neither intentional nor grossly negligent. Well documented findings remain the best precaution. For pre-existing conditions, the guide Health Questions in Student Disability Insurance helps.
Which Factors Determine the Premium?
There is no premium figure for civil engineering students, because insurers calculate from entry age, health, pension amount, term and classification. The table shows which factors you can influence.
| Factor | Typical effect | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Classification | The share of site work can change price and benefits | Describe the share of tasks |
| Health | Surcharges or exclusions are possible | Collect findings completely |
| Pension amount | A higher pension means a higher premium | Calculate your requirement |
| Term | A longer term increases the total premium | Plan until the end of your working life |
| Referral clause | A broad clause can limit the benefits | Compare the clause, not just the price |
Example calculation (assumption): You expect 1,900 euros per month in needs in the event of a claim and 300 euros from other income. The gap of 1,600 euros is a guideline for the BU pension. A move to an office job is not guaranteed, so do not set your requirement too low.
Does a BU Suit Civil Engineering Studies?
It is more likely to suit you if:
- You want to work physically or on building sites and want to secure this risk
- You are healthy and can answer the health questions reliably
- You want early protection while the health check is still straightforward
It is less likely to suit you if:
- You are still unsure whether you will work mainly in the office or on site. A later comparison may then be more sensible
- The premium strains your living costs and your studies
- You already have cover through an employer or a provision scheme whose scope you have checked

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the BU still apply if I later move to an office job?
That depends on the contract. The profession most recently practised counts under Section 172 (2) VVG, so a change can alter the assessment. A referral clause may also bring office work into play. Read this clause carefully before you sign. The guide Abstract Referral Clauses explains the basics.
Do I have to state internships on building sites?
If the application asks about activities or work experience, yes. Internships show which tasks you realistically take on. For side jobs during your studies, the guide Working Student: The 20-Hour Rule (in German) is helpful.
What counts if I am restricted after an accident?
Under Section 172 (2) VVG, sickness, bodily injury and an age-atypical loss of strength count. Whether an accident leads to benefits under the contract depends on whether you are permanently unable to practise your profession. The exact conditions are set out in the contract.
Can I adjust the contract to my profession later?
Many contracts allow increases, and certain occasions trigger them without a new health check. Which occasions these are is set out in the contract, for example starting work or a salary increase. The guide Future Insurability Guarantee explains the basics.
How to Proceed Now
- Note your possible roles and estimate the share of site and office work in percent.
- Have the classification of these roles confirmed in writing by at least two insurers.
- Collect findings on your spine, joints and accident consequences before you complete the application.
- Check the referral clause and the future insurability guarantee before you sign.
