Occupational disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU) for business informatics students concerns a course of study that sits between business administration and IT. Whether an insurer classifies you as a consultant, an analyst or a project lead decides both the benefits and the premium.
Short answer: Under Section 172 (2) VVG (German Insurance Contract Act), you are occupationally disabled if you are likely to be permanently unable to carry out your most recently practised profession (Stand: October 2026). Business informatics graduates often work on projects between specialist departments and IT. The job description in the application is therefore decisive. We do not name a fixed premium, because it depends on entry age, health, pension amount and term.
The Essentials at a Glance
- The interface between IT and business administration makes classification inconsistent from insurer to insurer.
- Screen work, project pressure and client meetings are typical strains that insurers ask about.
- Roles such as IT consultant, business analyst or ERP project lead can be classified differently from pure programming.
- Answer health questions completely and in text form under Section 19 VVG.
- You influence the premium mainly through the pension amount, the term and contract clauses.
Which Activities Are Typical in the Business Informatics Profession?
Business informatics is an interdisciplinary field. Graduates work where business processes and information technology meet. Typical roles include:
- IT consultant or consultant for enterprise software, with client meetings and travel
- Business analyst who gathers requirements and coordinates with specialist departments
- Project lead for ERP or digitalisation projects
- Data analysis and controlling with evaluations, dashboards and reports
- Software development in a team, sometimes combined with conceptual design
For insurers, the main focus of the role is decisive. A project lead with a lot of coordination and travel may be classified differently from someone who works mainly on code. Therefore ask for a classification of every role you realistically aim for, and compare the results.
Which Health Questions Arise From Screen Work?
For business informatics graduates, neck and shoulder complaints, eye strain, headaches and sleep problems are common topics. Stress, exhaustion or anxiety disorders can also trigger questions if they were treated medically. Report treatments even if they were brief, where the application asks about them.
Under Section 19 (1) VVG, you must disclose significant circumstances that the insurer asks about in text form. If you deliberately answer a question incorrectly, you risk withdrawal under Section 19 (2) VVG. The right to withdraw lapses under subsection (3) if the breach was neither intentional nor grossly negligent. The safest approach is a complete answer backed by medical findings. More on typical cases is in the guide Health Questions in Student Disability Insurance.
What Drives the Premium for Business Informatics Students?
There is no fixed sum. Insurers take into account entry age, health, pension amount, term and classification. The following table shows what you can look at.
| Factor | Effect | Practical question |
|---|---|---|
| Entry age | The premium usually rises with the age at signing | Can I sign early? |
| Occupation | Classification affects scope and price | Is every role confirmed in writing? |
| Health | Pre-existing conditions can lead to surcharges or exclusions | Are my findings complete? |
| Pension amount | A higher pension means a higher premium | What is my actual requirement? |
| Future increases | Increases without a new health check are possible depending on the occasion | Is a future insurability guarantee agreed? |
Example calculation (assumption): Your need in the event of a claim is 2,000 euros per month. You expect 400 euros from savings or other income. The gap of 1,600 euros serves as a guideline for the desired BU pension. For premium examples, see the guide Occupational Disability Insurance as a Student: What Does It Really Cost?.
Does a BU Suit Business Informatics Studies?
The question is less whether the course of study is suitable and more how stable your budget and your health are.
It is more likely to suit you if:
- You are healthy and want to secure protection early
- You plan to take on a role with high responsibility, where failures are hard to replace
- You can carry the premium over the long term
It is less likely to suit you if:
- You are still unsure whether you will end up in IT, consulting or data analysis. A later decision with a clearer job profile may make more sense
- The premium strains your rent and living costs
- You already have cover through your employer, and you have checked its scope beforehand

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a side job as a programmer taken into account in the classification?
Side jobs are relevant if they describe your career path or form part of your income. State them as far as the application asks. The insurer decides the classification in each individual case, so put any questions in writing.
Do I have to state projects abroad?
Activities abroad can affect the territorial scope of the contract. Ask the insurer to show you the scope and clarify stays abroad before you sign.
What changes if I later become a consultant?
The contract assesses the profession most recently practised under Section 172 (2) VVG. If you move from development into consulting, the insurer must assess the new activity. A job description that covers realistic roles without becoming imprecise helps. An adjustment without a new health check may be possible under the future insurability guarantee (Nachversicherungsgarantie).
How does this differ from computer science?
In computer science, technical development usually takes centre stage. Business informatics adds project, consulting and analysis elements, and these shares can shift the classification. Compare the guide on computer science studies as well.
How to Proceed Now
- List your realistic career roles after graduation, with main tasks and the share of travel.
- Have at least two insurers confirm the classification of these roles in writing.
- Collect findings on your back, eyes, sleep and mental health, where relevant, before you complete the application.
- Compare the referral clause, the future insurability guarantee and the term, not just the premium.
