Occupational disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU) for nutrition science (Ernährungswissenschaft) students covers a field with very different career paths. Nutrition counselling in your own practice, quality assurance in the food industry, laboratory work, catering and work for public authorities are far apart. This guide shows how insurers classify these paths and which health questions matter for nutrition scientists.

Short answer: Last updated: October 2026. There is no fixed premium for nutrition science students. What matters is how your career field is described in the contract, for example as self-employed nutrition counselling or laboratory work. The Federal Statistical Office (Statistisches Bundesamt, Destatis) group agricultural, forestry and nutrition sciences, veterinary medicine recorded about 58,300 students in the winter semester 2025/26 (as of 26.08.2026).

The most important points at a glance

  • Under § 172 para. 2 of the Insurance Contract Act (VVG, Versicherungsvertragsgesetz), you are occupationally disabled if you can no longer perform the occupation you last practised. For nutrition counsellors, their own practice is often the benchmark.
  • Nutrition counselling as a self-employed person, laboratory work and quality assurance are often classified differently.
  • Skin contact with chemicals, allergies and the respiratory tract are health topics that play a role in laboratories and in production.
  • If you start as an employee and later open a practice, check how the tariff handles that change.
  • The premium depends on your age at entry, your health, your occupational group and the scope of benefits. Only identical benefits can be compared.

How are career paths in nutrition classified?

Nutrition science is not a protected professional title in the narrower sense. Insurers therefore assess the concrete activity, based on the description in the application. The table names typical paths and the question behind each one.

Career fieldTypical question from the insurerWhat to check in the application
Nutrition counselling in your own practiceHow much do order volume and income fluctuate?State practice form, client structure and working hours
Quality assurance in the food industryIs the work mainly office work or work on the premises?Estimate and state the shares of laboratory, production and office work
Laboratory work with chemicalsAre there hazardous substances and skin contact?Describe protective measures and exposures
Catering in clinics or canteensIs there shift work and physical strain?State working hours and tasks in the kitchen operation
Food inspection in a public authorityIs it a public-sector post?State employer, fixed-term nature and inspection duties

The table describes typical constellations, not binding classifications. Which occupational group your insurer assigns is set out in the tariff. When you move between practice, industry and laboratory, the referral clause under § 172 para. 3 VVG is decisive.

Which health questions matter for nutrition scientists?

The application asks about pre-existing conditions, treatments and medication. In laboratory work, allergies, skin conditions and respiratory complaints are typical topics. If you work in kitchens or production facilities, note complaints affecting the musculoskeletal system. Under § 19 para. 1 VVG, you have a duty to disclose (Anzeigepflicht) the circumstances the insurer has asked about in text form. Gesetze im Internet: § 19 VVG (Last updated: 26.10.2026).

  1. Record findings on allergies, skin reactions and the respiratory tract, even if they only occur from time to time.
  2. Note complaints affecting your back, shoulders or hands if you work physically in an operation.
  3. If you cannot answer a question because a finding is missing, say so expressly in the application.

Your health information is the basis of every acceptance decision. Incomplete answers can cause problems later, even if the insurer initially accepted the contract.

What does the calculation look like for a nutrition counsellor?

Assume you set up a practice after your studies and have fluctuating income in the first years. Assume you need 1,000 euros a month in case of disability to cover practice rent and living costs. The premium is not calculated from the practice but from the application. The pension should therefore be based on your fixed costs and not on a good year.

How large is the nutrition science group?

Nutrition science belongs to the subject group agricultural, forestry and nutrition sciences, veterinary medicine in official statistics. The individual subjects are not reported separately. The table compares this group with the two larger groups of human medicine and health sciences and the humanities.

Subject group, winter semester 2025/26Students in totalInternational studentsShare of international students
Agricultural, forestry and nutrition sciences, veterinary medicine58,2809,99217.1 percent
Human medicine and health sciences215,42423,96411.1 percent
Humanities281,31539,46914.0 percent

Source: Federal Statistical Office (Statistisches Bundesamt), table 2.5.77, last updated 26.08.2026. The share is a calculation of our own. The group is smaller than human medicine and health sciences, but it has the highest share of international students of the three groups shown.

Is it worth taking out occupational disability insurance during your studies?

A policy taken out during your studies benefits from a low entry age and usually good health. Against that, the career path often only becomes clear after graduation. If you already work in a laboratory or in an internship with hazardous substances, describe that activity in the application now. If you later want to become a practice owner, clarify the classification again before you open the practice.

Frequently asked questions

Is nutrition counselling counted as its own occupation in the contract?

That depends on the tariff. Some insurers treat nutrition counselling as an independent activity, others classify it according to the training. In the application, state your qualification, the practice form and the scope of the work.

What if I react allergically in a laboratory?

An allergy can be relevant in the application if treatments or restrictions exist. State it in full, and ask the insurer how it assesses activities involving known allergy triggers.

Does the statutory disability pension apply to students?

Only if you have three years of mandatory contributions in the last five years and the waiting period is met. Under § 43 SGB VI, the pension depends on these requirements, and for many students they are not met. Gesetze im Internet: § 43 SGB VI (Last updated: 26.10.2026).

Can I change my occupation later without losing the contract?

As a rule, the contract stays in force. Whether a change affects your insurance cover depends on the referral clause and on the new activity. Have the process explained to you in writing in advance.

Your next steps

  1. Describe your intended career path in the application, including practice, industry, laboratory or public authority and any planned changes.
  2. Ask in writing how the tariff classifies nutrition counselling and laboratory work.
  3. Read the referral clause under § 172 para. 3 VVG and check whether it fits your career path.
  4. Answer the health questions completely and keep a copy of the application.
