Occupational Disability Insurance in Economics: Classification

Why the referral clause and the classification of office work matter so much for economics graduates, and how the premium is shaped.

Occupational disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung, BU) for economics students depends on how an insurer classifies economists working in an office, a bank or a research institute. Many jobs in this field are desk-based, which does not necessarily make classification simpler.

Short answer: Under Section 172 (2) VVG (German Insurance Contract Act), you are occupationally disabled if you are likely to be permanently unable to carry out your most recently practised profession (Stand: October 2026). For economics students, what matters is the job description in the application and whether the contract refers you to other activities. There is no general premium. It depends on age, health, pension amount and term.

The Essentials at a Glance

  • Economists mostly work at a desk, but insurers do not assess this the same way in every contract.
  • The referral clause often decides whether other office jobs can be expected of you. Read it carefully.
  • Psychological strain and back problems from long periods of sitting are among the topics health questions cover.
  • The duty of disclosure under Section 19 VVG applies even when a detail seems unimportant to you.
  • The premium depends on age, health, disability pension and term, not on the subject of study alone.

Which Jobs for Economics Graduates Count as Office Work?

Economists can work in very different fields: banks and insurers, research institutes, associations, consultancies or public administration. What they have in common is usually desk-based work involving analysis, forecasts and reports.

  • Banking or asset management with analysis and client contact
  • Economic research with models, data analysis and publications
  • Associations and ministries with expert reports and policy work
  • Consulting with projects, travel and changing clients

For the classification, it matters whether the insurer rates the job as office work overall or assesses individual tasks. Many providers also check whether travel, appointments outside the office or management responsibilities are part of the role. Have the classification of your job description confirmed in writing.

Why Is the Referral Clause So Important for Economics?

Under Section 172 (2) VVG, what counts is the profession most recently practised. Many contracts add a referral clause. Under Section 172 (3) VVG, the insurer can additionally require in the contract that you do not carry out any other activity that matches your training, abilities and previous social status.

This matters for economics graduates because many activities outside the profession you trained for also take place at a desk. A broad clause can mean the insurer refuses to pay, even though you could work in administration or controlling. The clause is therefore a central point of comparison. The guide Abstract Referral Clauses explains this in more detail.

Which Health Questions Are Typical for Economics Students?

The health questions relate to your state of health, not to your field of study. Office jobs still bring certain issues to the fore: back pain from long periods of sitting, sleep disorders, migraines, concentration problems and mental illness. For mental illness, insurers often ask in detail about diagnosis, duration of treatment and medication.

Under Section 19 (1) VVG, you must disclose the circumstances asked about truthfully and in text form. Treatments that were brief or long ago may also have to be disclosed, depending on the question. If you are unsure, note the period, diagnosis and treating doctor before you complete the application. The guide Health Questions in Student Disability Insurance shows typical cases.

What Does BU Cost for Economics Students?

There is no fixed figure for economics students. The premium is based on entry age, health, pension amount, term and classification. The table shows the levers you have.

LeverEffectTypical step
Occupational groupOffice jobs are classified differently by each insurerGet the classification in writing
Referral clauseA broad clause can limit the benefitsCompare the clause, not just the price
TermA longer term increases the total premiumPlan until your planned retirement date
IndexationAdjusting the pension to income or inflation usually raises the premiumDecide consciously whether you need it

Example calculation (assumption): You want 1,500 euros per month in the event of a claim and have 300 euros from a side job. The difference of 1,200 euros is a guideline for the BU pension. Does Occupational Disability Insurance Suit Your Situation as an Economics Student?

Disability insurance protects you if you can no longer practise your profession for health reasons. It does not suit everyone.

It is more likely to suit you if:

  • You want to secure cover early, while the health check is still straightforward
  • You plan to work in a job where your income depends heavily on your health
  • You have no cover through your employer

It is less likely to suit you if:

  • The premium puts a noticeable strain on your living costs
  • You do not yet know whether you want to work in a bank, in research or in consulting. A later comparison may then be clearer
  • You have pre-existing conditions that would probably lead to a surcharge or an exclusion

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the degree, bachelor or master, affect the classification?

Whether the degree itself plays a role depends on the insurer. The concrete activity you carry out is usually more important. Describe the job in the application precisely, rather than only naming the course of study.

Do I have to state a working student job at a bank?

If the application asks about side jobs, yes. Working student jobs can show which tasks you realistically take on and help with the classification. The guide Working Student: The 20-Hour Rule (in German) explains the working student status itself.

Does the BU still apply if I change occupation after my studies?

A change of occupation changes the profession most recently practised. Whether the contract still fits depends on how the application describes your job and on clauses such as the future insurability guarantee (Nachversicherungsgarantie). Clarify the change with the insurer before you make it.

Can I adjust the contract later?

Many contracts allow increases, for example a higher pension on certain occasions. Which changes are possible without a new health check is set out in the contract. Read this before you sign, because later it is hard to change anything.

How to Proceed Now

  1. List the jobs you realistically expect to do after your studies, with the share of office work, travel and management responsibility.
  2. Have at least two insurers confirm in writing how they classify these jobs.
  3. Compare the referral clause and the future insurability guarantee, not just the premium.
  4. Check the term and indexation and decide consciously whether you need them.
