Is the semester ticket included in the Bonn semester fee?

Yes. The university lists the Germany Semester Ticket as an item in the semester fee, at 226.80 euros for the winter semester 2026/27 (status October 2026, University of Bonn). You do not have to buy a separate ticket. The page does not state an amount for another semester ticket, for example for a transport association. It also does not list a separate administration fee.

How the Germany Ticket works in everyday life is explained in our guide Semester Ticket and Germany Ticket: Student Travel Costs.

Why does the amount differ between semesters?

The total for the summer semester 2026 is 345.07 euros, which is 18.00 euros below the winter semester 2026/27. The difference comes solely from the Germany Semester Ticket, whose share in the summer is 208.80 euros instead of 226.80 euros. All other items remain the same.

Worked example. Assumption: you are enrolled in the winter semester 2026/27 and the summer semester 2027, and the summer amount stays at 345.07 euros as in 2026. Then you pay a total of 708.14 euros for these two semesters. You need to ask the university for the actual amount for the summer semester 2027, because the page does not give it.

How and when do I pay the semester fee?

The cost page refers to the re-enrolment section for payment. The transfer details are given there. According to the page of the student registry (no date of change, accessed October 2026), the re-enrolment deadline for a winter semester ends on 31 August, and for a summer semester on 28 or 29 February. The university publishes the exact dates on its page on semester dates. For the winter semester 2026/27 the deadline has therefore passed, while for the summer semester 2027 the 28 February 2027 serves as a guide (February 2027 has 28 days, our own derivation). Compare the amount on your notice with the table above.

The cost page also names two special cases: students on leave of absence (Beurlaubte) pay a reduced contribution of 21.26 euros in the winter semester 2026/27 (the page calls it a “reduced social contribution”; it is one cent below the 21.27 euros that the remaining items add up to, and the page gives no reason for this), and guest students (Gasthörer) as well as small numbers of secondary listeners (Zweithörer) pay 100.00 euros per semester.

If you are newly enrolling at the University of Bonn, the First Semester Checklist: What to Do Before Term Starts also helps you so that the fee does not get overlooked.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the fee include items for student self-administration and the subject councils?

Student self-administration and the subject councils represent the interests of students at the university. According to the page, 14.00 euros and 2.25 euros are shown for these in the winter semester 2026/27 (status October 2026). The student representation can tell you which offers are financed with them.

What is the culture ticket item?

According to the page, 3.00 euros per semester is charged for the culture ticket, in the winter semester 2026/27 as in the summer semester 2026. The page gives only the amount, not the services. Ask the university which offers are linked to it.

How do I recognise a wrong total on my notice?

Add up the individual items on your notice. If the sum is not 363.07 euros for the winter semester 2026/27 or 345.07 euros for the summer semester 2026, it is worth asking. A difference can also come from another semester or an additional item, so first check the details on your notice.

What happens if I do not pay the fee on time?

According to the student registry, a late fee of 5 euros is charged for late payment. Late or incomplete payments can lead to deregistration (Exmatrikulation) by official decision. In admission-restricted degree programmes in higher semesters, your place can be lost, because places that become free go to applicants who registered in time. If you cannot meet the deadline, ask the student office early.

Do I have to pay the fee again every semester?

Yes. The university shows separate amounts for the winter and the summer semester. Plan for each semester anew, even if the amount changes only slightly.

How to proceed now

  1. Open the University of Bonn page on costs and compare it with your notice.
  2. Note the amount for the current semester and the date for your re-enrolment.
  3. Clarify any uncertainties about items such as the culture ticket or the total directly with the student registry.
  4. For the summer semester 2027, set aside a reserve and pay by the end of February 2027, until the amount is confirmed.
