Short answer: A doctorate (Doktortitel) pays off mainly if research, teaching or a career that requires a doctorate is your goal. We found no verified salary premium for the title in the official sources we checked. In 2025, 28,800 doctorates were completed in Germany (Destatis, as of October 2026).
The most important points
- The title is an additional qualification, not an automatic pay rise.
- In academia, a doctorate is usually a prerequisite for the next career step.
- While you are doing a doctorate, your income matters: a research post on the TV-L pay grade E 13 starts at 4,759.37 euros gross a month in step 1 (from 1 April 2026).
- Besides fees and printing costs, the income you could otherwise earn during the doctorate is often the decisive factor.
- We found no verified salary comparison by industry in the sources we checked. Collective agreements, job profiles and talks with graduates in your field are better starting points.
What does the doctorate do for your career?
You receive the title after passing your doctoral examination. How you may use it is set by the doctoral regulations of your university. The guide on which doctoral title you may use in Germany (in German) explains the details. What the title means depends mainly on your field.
| Field | What the title usually means |
|---|---|
| Universities and research | A doctorate is usually required for habilitation, junior professorship or a professorship. |
| Industry research | The title can affect your grading. Tasks, contract and collective agreement matter more. |
| Public sector | Your pay grade follows the collective agreement and the tasks you perform, not the title alone. |
| Consulting, administration, self-employment | The effect of the title is hard to measure and depends heavily on the industry and client base. |
How many people do a doctorate in Germany?
The Federal Statistical Office counted about 216,200 doctoral candidates (Promovierende) for 2025, 1.8 percent more than the year before. One quarter of them (54,200 people) hold a foreign nationality. In the examination year 2025, 28,800 doctorates were completed, 2.4 percent more than in the year before.
For comparison, the same examination year recorded 527,600 higher education degrees in total. The 28,800 doctorates therefore make up about 5.5 percent of all degrees (calculation: 28,800 divided by 527,600, rounded). The doctorate is not a rare exception, but it is not a mass degree either.
What do you earn during a doctorate?
A doctorate is funded either through a post or through a scholarship. A research post in the TV-L collective agreement area is usually graded E 13. In Hesse, the separate TV-H applies. The table shows the monthly amounts from 1 April 2026.
| Step E 13 | Gross monthly pay from 1 April 2026 (euros) |
|---|---|
| Step 1 | 4,759.37 |
| Step 2 | 5,106.09 |
| Step 3 | 5,366.89 |
| Step 4 | 5,873.56 |
| Step 5 | 6,573.97 |
| Step 6 | 6,764.69 |
The figures come from the GEW reproduction of the TV-L. A further increase of 2.0 percent is planned from 1 March 2027. A scholarship works differently: the scholarship foundations funded by the federal government pay a basic scholarship of up to 1,750 euros a month for doctoral students, plus a research cost allowance of 100 euros (as of October 2026). The guide on post or scholarship, with a net comparison (in German) shows the difference in detail.
How do you calculate whether a doctorate pays off for you?
A simple calculation helps you approach the question soberly. It does not replace personal planning, but it shows which items you should include.
- Set a realistic duration. It varies considerably by field. The overview is in the guide on average doctoral duration by field (in German).
- Note your income during the doctorate, gross and net, separately for a post or a scholarship.
- Estimate what you could earn in the same period with your degree alone. You will have to research this number yourself, ideally through job advertisements in your field.
- Add up fees, printing, travel and software. The guide on doctoral costs and their tax treatment (in German) covers typical items.
- Write down which concrete door the title opens, for example a post that would not be open without a doctorate. That is more reliable than an assumption.
Where are the limits of the title?
The title does not replace work experience. If you start a doctorate without a clear plan, the risk is considerable: fixed-term posts end, and scholarships stop on fixed dates. It is therefore worth building contacts and practical experience while you are still doing your doctorate. Before you sign, you should also clarify the fixed-term conditions described in the guide on fixed-term doctoral posts (in German).
Frequently asked questions
Does a doctorate automatically bring a higher salary?
No, at least not in any way we could verify. The official sources we checked contain no salary premium for the title. Pay depends on the collective agreement, the industry, the post and your negotiation.
Can I use “Dr.” while I am still doing my doctorate?
No. You may use the title only after it has been conferred. Which abbreviations are permitted is explained in the guide on doctoral title abbreviations (in German).
Do I need a doctorate to work in research?
In academic research it is often required, in industry often not. The job advertisement is decisive. Read it carefully before you commit to a doctorate.
How long does a doctorate take?
That depends strongly on the field, the funding and the supervision arrangement. A breakdown by field is in the guide on doctoral duration mentioned above.
Can I do a doctorate while working?
Many people do, but the doctorate often takes longer as a result. The guide on doing a doctorate alongside a job (in German) covers timing, employers and leave.
What to do next
